  • suggest a comfortable, fuel efficient 150cc commuter

    1. Budget : 90K
    2. Age: 26
    3. Height: 6'0
    4. Weight: 92Kg
    5. Intended usage (eg. Office/College commute, Highway runs, Racetrack usage, Weekend recreation riding etc.): Office & Occasional Highway ride
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any) : strictly above 45 {this should be the main criteria}
    7. Expecting qualities : Not keen on the bike's looks front. But it should have Good rider + pillion comfort, low service, spares cost, low maintenance, fuel efficient.
    7. City & Highway percentage usage: 90%
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running: Daily 40km approx (up & down)
    9. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing) : Chennai
    10. Brand / Bike type preference (if any):Low maintenance cost would be preferrable hence leaving out Fi and honda bikes.

        Yamaha sz-rr v2 is a good option. But I didn't understand the reason for opting out the FI bikes. They will definitely return good mileage and have ultra smooth engines.

          Local mechanics not being able to service the bike and additional cost of Fi cleaning kept me away from choosing them.


          As for sz-rrv2, bike looks good from far, but when you inspect close, you'll see too much plastic being used and the panels aren't sturdy enough. Don't know whether they'll last even a single crash. Compared to them hero bikes seems and feels solid. Any idea about the xtreme sports/ Achiever, what's their real world mileage like, and will they be in the market for the next 5 years or so ?

            Okay when you say 150cc and Commuter bike and Fuel efficiency, all that comes to the right hand side of equation is #1 Honda Unicorn and #2 Suzuki GS150

            Set aside the fact that now honda unicorn is 160cc.

            Why Honda: Proven Tech, comfortable for taller people, good shock absorption capability, Balance between Power-Torque and fuel efficiency. Forgiving Bike perfect for commuter use.

            Why Suzuki: 6 Gears, slightly larger tyres and 0.8 bhp lesser engine, means with the correct gear shift you can extract better mileage (no arguments against those who do not agree with this). That alongwith fuel tank capacity of 15L against 12 of Honda gives you A Potentially longer tank range.

            Did you say you are tall? well Then check and compare Over all height and length of both vehicles. I do not want to sound as if leaning more towards Suzuki.

            But in past I have driven Suzuki as well as Honda, and In My Experience I got better mileage from Suzuki, driving conditions and the rider being same in both cases

            Now this is purely my Opinion combined with some statistics for you to begin with.

            Get a feel of both bikes (or all bikes in your list) , service network and stuff like that in your vicinity. And make your own choice!

              Thanks for the feedback. But the online reviews, that I came across indicate that new uni160 has stiff suspension, clunky gearbox and has heating issues unlike the good old uni 150. And there is also some rumours that honda may stop this new uni160 and bring back old 150. So I decided to stay away from uni for now.

              And GS is temporarily stopped and has no stock in the showrooms that I've visited. But one salesman said, they'll again be available from March. But that is not authentic, will have to wait and see.

              Any other bikes which satisfy the above critieria in the current market ??

                Hi there, I would like to help you!
                While mentioning your preferred bikes, you missed out on the highest selling 150CC bike India, The Pulsar 150. This bike might have lost the market hold now, but is still a great consideration. I have used the Pulsar 150 for 5 years and it never let me down. Presently I have a Pulsar 180. These are the reasons why Pulsar 150 should be your choice
                - It comes under your budget. With rest of the amount you can get yourself some good quality riding gears.
                - I am 6'0 and 100kgs, never faced any problem with the seating position. It is quite comfortable, at least better than my current bike.
                - The Pulsar 150 is a good commuter. I used to ride it approximately 50KMS. daily without stressing either myself or the engine. Though a point worth mentioning here is that I used Motul engine oil and I think it made all the difference. Otherwise the OEM Engine Oil is pathetic and with that, the engine would heat up pretty quickly, hence affecting performance. I am not sure about the racetrack ability of the bike since I never took it there, and I dont think that the P150 would be able to meet your cornering expectations. Highway performance is average. Its like slow but steady wins the race. You won't be able to cruise at 120-130kmhr constantly, but you would be comfortably cruising at 80-90
                - Coming to the comfort aspect, its a really comfortable bike. The seat is quite wide and long that accommodates the rider as well as the pillion comfortably. Your back wont pain much even during long rides. Plus ladies especially Aunty types would find it easier to sit on the bike since it has single seat and uni grab handle unlike the double grab rails on the other bikes which are less of utility and more of show-off. Maintenance is never an issue with the Pulsar 150 if you get it serviced properly. It certainly doesnt demand as much service as a Yamaha. Parts are cheap and easily available too.
                - Pulsar 150 is very fuel efficient. If you ride it sensibly, you would easily get 45-50 kmpl. Your daily commutes won't dig a hole in your pocket.
                - Pulsar 150 comes at an average OTR price of approximately ₹78,000 all over India. Now coming to some other bikes:
                -Suzuki GS150R- Would have suggested this instead of the Pulsar 150, but I doubt its availability.
                -Suzuki Gixxer 150- This one is another great option. Would touch the corners of your budget and won't be able to satisfy your mileage needs, but this bike is a great fun to ride. Quality wise it is much better than the Pulsar, but parts are quite expensive, compared to Pulsar. Performance wise again much better than the P150. Can cruise constantly at 100 on the highway with ease. Buy this bike only of you can compromise slightly on the Budget and Mileage.
                -Hero CBZ Xtreme Sports- Never ridden it personally but heared from a friend that its maintenance hungry and braking isn't too good either. Anyways I am not very sure about this bike, you better read some online reviews.
                -Honda CB Unicorn 160- Many people have complained about the engine smoothness, I too have felt it.. But yes, it has a really good overall performance. It accelerates well and has a good top end, could easily smoke out the Pulsar 150. I have not heard anything about the CB Unicorn 150 relaunch though.
                - If you can extend your budget further , you can get the Pulsar AS150. It gets the best of both worlds, moreover it is launched recently and has a great ans refreshing design.

                Let's come to the conclusion now, just as I said before, I would have recommended the GS150R if I was sure about the bikes availibility. The 6th gear makes highway cruising lot more relaxed, but well since I am not sure about its availability, I would recommend you the Pulsar 150. Apart from the above mentioned points, it is a good old time tested bike and the choice of many Indians. I don't think you would regret buying it, just ensure that you get yourself a bike from a good dealer.

                Anyways, this was my point of view and suggestion, I do not intend to disrespect anyone's choice. The ultimate choice still completely depends upon you! Sorry if you think I tend to support the Pulsar 150 too much, its just a personal viewpoint

                  SZ-RR is my bet. Extremely comfortable rider and pillion seat coupled with one of the smoothest engines around makes it a strong contender. Not two much horses in its stable - but still enough for weekend rides. Take a test ride.

                    Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I'm considering P150 too, but keeping it as the last option, I'm planning to keep my bike for atleast 5 years, hence I'm not 100% committed on P150 yet.

                    Yes. A test drive would help better. But two showrooms, I've visited doesn't have a test ride bike for szrrv2. One of them didn't even had a display bike. Have to lookout for the other showrooms in the city.

                    How much mileage does the szrrv2 return, when compared to FZFi ? Is it better than FZfi ??

                      Should be between 43-47 kmpl under mixed riding condition. FZ is on the sportier side while returning more or less the same mileage.

                        Hmm so, mileage wise there is no difference between sz and fz. I was hoping sz would be slightly higher, anyways, let's hope it doesn't go below that..

                        Ok, Now my priority stands like : sz-rrv2>>achiever/xtreme sports>>Pulsar 150>>uni160( I know the bike is nowhere near the old150, but considering it, as a last option, because it still returns better mileage)



                        Which among the above bikes do you guys recommend, if I'm planning to keep the bike for more than 5 years. Good spares availability and less niggles will be the expected qualities here ??

                            Is it ?. I checked with Jains Suzuki Pallavaram. No stock there. Though porur is far from my place, I'll call them and confirm anyway. Its better I confirm on gs150 now, before I decide to write it off my list.

                              We have 2011 model sz which has done around 45k kms and has not been properly maintained, service intervals extended upto 8k and washed once or twice per year,its used by 10-15 people for their different purposes ranging from getting newspaper to carrying bags of wheat and rice.
                              Still bike runs great,
                              I own a NS which i take full care but still it isn't as smooth as yamaha.
                              Sz is very under rated bike,
                              Can do 80-90 with ease and even pull from 40 in 5th gear and deliver mileage of 45-50 kmpl.
                              Pillion comfort is also good.
                              So i would suggest this bike to you as its damn reliable and has torque in low revs for city commute.
