  • Project Bike for college.

    Good Day,

I am Nishad, a design student in Pune. I have a personal project in mind for submission to college and want to build a bike.

First things first, I have a budget of upto 50,000 for the bike and 1,00,000 for the modifications.

The basic idea is to design a completely new body and plonk it onto an existing bike. I have just started my project and havent gone far in the design phase yet. I had just setup my moodboard and realised what bike I will be using is a big factor in the direction I will go in terms of design. So, here I am to ask you, my fellow XBHPians for your suggestions.

Firstly, I am NOT going to build a cafe racer under any circumstances. Also I want to leave the frame as is because I do not want to run into problems with RTO in future ( basically keep the bike as road legal as possible ). So, I would appreciate suggestions for a bike and body styles.

P.S.Would anyone know a place where I can source crashed bikes that have a good frame and engine ( the rest will be swapped with new parts anyways ).

    Thank you for your time,
    Thisisnishad

My Opinion: Instead of going for Crashed bikes, search in OLX/Quikr... You can get a good deal of used motorcycles. for 50K I think you will get a very good bike with almost good engine (means very less parts you need to fix/repair).

If you want a crashed one... You have to go and enquire in many local garage shops. If they have they will give it or they will be having some contacts or somehow they will help you.

        Okay, so been a while.

I have though now fixed on a bike and kind of fixed on what I wanna do to it.

I want a Royal Enfield Bullet or Thunderbird with a twinspark engine.

Based on what I want to do, this bike is perfect and is highly customisable. Also, I will be needing the engine and the frame in the best shape. All the rest will be changed anyways.

I am now looking for one of these bikes under 60k-70k. If anyone can help, please do and thanks a lot in advance.

        Thank you for your time,

If you have any friends working for any General insurance companies, then you can look for SALVAGED bikes which can be bought for dirt cheap prices and are not often in too good shape though (body and looks wise).

Hi! What area do you live in? I have a few sources to get crashed bikes for more or less good frame but not for engines. You may pm me your location.

I agree with the guy who mentioned getting a good used bike for 50-60k. Do share what kind of body modifications you want to perform and what methods are you using - fibreglass/sheet metal? And what is the scope/vision? As you're a design student, you'd have some concept in mind.

I live in Pune. I have actually completed the project with a friend. I was able to work on it when I interned at a custom shop (Autologue Design) about 2 years ago. Not super happy with the result so did not share pics. Can DM if interested. I’m currently focused on looking for work so will probably start a new project in about a year with a bigger budget.

We did get a used RE classic 350. Replaced the front end with a KTM duke’s and made a custom swing arm so could fit both the Duke’s wheels. Also made a custom tank, fenders (both in sheet metal) and a seat. Can DM pics if interested. Hopefully will start next project in about a year and it will most probably be a scrambler.
