• Buying a Harley Davidson 883!

Hey guys,

I am considering upgrading from my Bullet 500 Desert storm to a Harley Davidson 883 or MAYBE...just maybe a 48!(thought 48 is way out of budget) i might still consider it.

I am still in 2 minds though as i get a lot of friends trying to convince my not to go for a Harley unless i am a die hard fan of Harley and so on... according to them there are a lot of alternatives and yes i agree but then again the pride of ownership which he might get from buying a Triumph for instance i wouldn't get the same unless its a Harley Davidson (no offense to any brand names here).

Wanted to get your thoughts on if it is really worth buying a Harley Davidson if i am not going to be riding it daily? As my work place is in the heart of Pune cities most crowded areas. Also, being married and all now i really do not have as much time as i did used to earlier to go on long rides and overnight rides etc.

Really would also like to know from 883 owners if there are any issues with the bike that i should know off before considering buying it or if the 48 is leaps and bounds better then the 883 to justify the 2L+ price difference...

Thanks

Query Approved

There are two questions here. One is whether it is worth buying a big bike if you aren't going to be using it regularly. Well that is something only you can answer.

Is it worth buying a 48 over a 883? I will leave that for people more acquainted with the American manufacturer to answer!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

But ofcourse. Two brands owned by the most narcissistic of people. And usage of such abstract phraseology to justify their peculiar pronouncement.

Hey man 1st decid what you want.HD 48 sure looks good and have a big pose value. But does it ensure a good ownership? It will heat up almost instantly in b2b traffic. Get a proper TD in road not like those TD around a mall.U said u are married. So will u take pillion? Plz check how much it will cost to get a pillion seat and back rest.U have to buy many things which should come with bike for free from factory itself.Hd won't give a free key chain or HD t-shirt.And then there is 'NORMAL' maintenance. If you are not a HD fan you will NOT like it.Buying a Hd is very different from maintaining a HD. you should talk with a 'Non HD FAN' HD owner. The story is same as RE.The fan will not tell you the true story.
I suggest you to take a look at bonnie and take proper TD of the bonnie,883 and 48 and consider about ownership(usabilities and maintenance) rather than brand value and pose value.

1200 is about 15 HP more ,
However that 15 HP is not actually felt in normal day to day life because it gets different drive pulley making all the gears taller. But it definitely cruises better.
You would do 120kph for long hours at lower rpm than 883.
Both 883 and 1200 have exactly same engine and everything else. Just cylinder bore is different. You can upgrade your 883 to 1200 later on in about 80k through an aftermarket kit or about 1.4lc via official HD upgrade kit.

Also you should consider a preowned 883 as they sell for about 5lc in almost showroom condition with hardly 10k km on them. That way you can save money and spend on other upgrades like Exhausts , bling , or engine upgrade kits.

Should you buy a Harley ? If you have to ask that question on an online community , probably you shouldn't!
They are not nicest beginner bikes , and exists only because people find them badass and easy to mould them into their dream rides!
As such there is no problem on these motorcycles!

Offcourse i have considered the cost involved in maintaining and owning a Harley, and yes even the cost of accessories. This is something i can get one by one down the line. I'd still have to get a pillion seat though.

Many suggested getting a custom seat according to my liking made outside and fitted, as that would save tons of money and give me the freedom of having a seat i like.

I am very keen on the 883 though as i really liked the feel of riding the bike and also the looks. Most probably i shall finalize on that model.

Like dustom_99 said, if you plan to buy a Harley don't ask it in a forum bro. Go with what the heart says. If I could maintain a Harley, i would already be owning a Harley.
It's a lot like nuts and bolts - if the rider's nuts, the ride - bolts!

HKR looks like u are fixed on HD.Then go with Hd and enjoy. I again suggest you to take proper TD before the leap.yeah its better to get the bike U like and then modify to ur needs. If you have the moolah to spent on aftermarkets and the time and patience to wait for parts go with Hd.Like @dustom-99 suggested u can get a 883 and modify. If you search you can find hundreds project in online forums on HD. Gud luck
Peace....

bro ur heart set for HD then go for it,,,, see biking is something which is all about passion and passions are driven from heart not from mind,,,,,

it is all about being happy trust me if u r going to get the bike u love u will be very happy ,,,, there is no such thing "the perfect bike" it is a myth every bike has one thing or something missing from one's perspective or other,,,,,,,

so just go for it,,,,,even if something goes wrong (God forbids) then u will always have resources to make it right dont u,?? so dont worry much dont ask much and most importantly dont sift much on internet or forums just go for what ur heart says,, all the best bro,,,,,be happy,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Not some investment capitalists or opportunistic business owners making something just because this thing can make some money.

I for one would never support a copy cat , unless it's a question of my own survival.

Lot of manufacturers looked at HD and Triumph and already knew what people want!
They needed no Engineering research ( just reverse engineer competition products) , no Product research , no branding research .
Just copy and offer similar product at lower cost . and have lot of morons support you for lower price !

Not to nitpick, but isnt that what both RE and HD did, by copying the BSA and the Indian respectively?

I am not very sure of RE history , but HD had over 7000patents by 1917.
Look at the shed HD started in , and pretty much at same time Indian was doing something's similar.
Indian predates HD by about 10 months , but their initial models could not climb slopes of slightest gradient and were not successful, HD innovated auto tensioner leather belt final drive which made their models successful!

As i said Hd won't even give a free key chain or Hd t-shirts.and you have to buy loads of things, spend loads of money for the things which should come free from factory.would you like to share how much simple things like RVM with extended rod cost from HD?

Yup they exist to lighten your pockets , I agree with that.
But at the same time it is clear that they did not come into being with sole aim of earning money.
They have stood the test of time , time being century long . there have been several times when they were bankrupt and had to close down operations , but they never went onto making mixer grinders and sewing machines. Which I think they were capable of doing to keep afloat.
HD was started with a vision of making motorcycle and be the rebel , they found it befitting to close down and go down in glory than stay afloat being second-rate manufacturer of something else.
That itself is great statement of being true to the roots!

I do not find anything wrong in demanding money for something you have created , specially being original!

And why should anyone give you a free key chain? Key chain costs money to manufacture , that cost need to be recovered , isn't it?
If someone is giving you 100 bucks free stuff when you spend some big money on his products , is sending across a message his product has its value artificially inflated! And he can negotiate
