  • Suzuki Gixxer SFZ OR Gixxer SFZ FI

    Hi fellow bikers,

After test riding AS150, Fazer, Hornet, and Gixxer, I finalized Gixxer SFZ (blue) and paid the booking amount of Rs.1000 8 days ago.

But Today, March 25th, International Business Times quoted Suzuki's National Head Marketing, Mr.Suresh's statement that they'll be launching Gixxer (SFZ) in Fuel Injection (FI) variant including rear disk brake anywhere starting next financial year, that is 1st April, 2016. The engine/design/power, etc. will be same as the old gixxer SFZ/gixxer model. There is only slight difference made by adding aggressive looking sharp graphics to SFZ model than the current variant.

I knew reading old post from Feb,16 that Suzuki will be launching FI and rear disc brake variant models when they showcased it in Feb, Auto Expo. Just the launch dates weren't announced at that time.

I need your advice as should I go with the carburetor based variant with only front disk OR wait for FI and rear disk based on my following needs/usage of the bike and the following point to be considered:

    1) I am not into stunts/racing and neither in throttling too much on highways
    2) I stay on highway and ride to Pune city (10kms) and then in Pune traffic (5-6kms)
    3) On highway I keep my speed in between 60-70 kmph, whereas in city its between 30-40kmph.
    4) Twice a year I go for a bike trip on highway to Goa, Solapur, Nashik, etc. (approx. 500-600 kms)
    5) What I read on few biking blogs/forums that FI technology is useful ONLY if you ride at fast speeds (80kmph +) / racing, etc. where this technology benefits towards more fuel efficiency. (Is that true: Please give your inputs If I read something wrong)
    6) I don't require a rear disk brake as I feel drum are sufficient considering my usage/traveling/speed.
    7) Dealer informed me that the new price will be at least 10K more as it will include both rear disk and FI. (Well, pricing is not an issue, but SFZ variant will come with rear disk as standard plus FI option).

For all those who need to know: I choose Gixxer for its mileage (company's claimed; 64, users claimed: 52-62), its sporty, hunk looks, as well as a best fit for daily use as a commuter.

Considering all the above which variant should I buy? The current one or the FI one? Does FI variant gives more fuel efficiency/mileage than carburetor based bikes? If, yes, then generally how much is the fuel efficiency difference between the both in realistic use?

Note: In Mr. Suresh Babu's Suzuki's National Head Marketing, statement he did not stated that in FI variant the mileage (company claimed) will be same/more than their current 64kmpl as advertised.

    Query Approved

I do not know when the rear disc variant will reach the market and how much patience you have to wait. But i would surely prefer a bike with front and rear disc any day.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Thanks for letting know your preference for rear disk.
I am ready to wait up till May-end for FI variant.

Re: Suzuki Gixxer SFZ OR Gixxer SFZ FI

        Hi Brother,
Let me give you the pros and cons of both the carburetor and FI. and then you can decide which one is best for you.

        Fuel injection pros:
It is the latest technology and it makes use of sensors to inject the exact amount of fuel to the engine to give maximum power and fuel economy.
It is fully automatic, so you don't have to worry about turning fuel knob to reserve, on or off.
No need of choke, the sensors detect the engine temperature. If it is too cold, sensors tell the fuel injection system to make air fuel mixture rich which helps the bike start in one go even in snow. So no need of remembering to turn choke on and off. It does it automatically.
No need to adjust the idling of the engine, the fuel injection system adjusts itself to any situation whether you are on hills or plains.
The throttle response is very very good, the bike responds really quickly to even slight throttle twist.

        Cons of fuel injection:
A fuel injected bike is comparatively expensive than a carbureted bike.
You have to take care and avoid adulterated fuel (petrol that is not pure). the impurities may jam the injection system and it is costly to repair or replace. So choose Fuel injection only if you are sure that fuel you are putting in is good. you don't need special petrol, just normal petrol without anything mixed in it.
If there is a problem in the bike, only the authorized person can work on the bike, the street side mechanics cannot repair the bike. So if you travel to remote places where the authorized service centers are far away, it might be a problem if it breaks down. For city and highway rides, FI is very good.

        Pros of carburetor:
        cheaper than fuel injected bike.
Simple and old... proven with age technology.
any mechanic can repair it, if it breaks down.

        Cons of carburetor:
Cold start can be a problem in winters.
you have to adjust the idling and engine tuning manually.(which is not big a deal).

So you can choose any one depending on where you live and keeping in mind the pros and cons of both the systems.
You wont go wrong with any of the two. just choose the one that will be easier to live with.

Now for the mileage part, I think mileage depends on the way a bike is ridden. It will not make much of a difference if you ride in calm manner. both systems will give same mileage.

Coming to rear disc brakes, Yes I will prefer rear discs over drums, different people have different priorities, it is entirely up to you, choose the one you want.

I hope I have answered all you doubts. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

            Hi,
You can upgrade to Philips night visions. HID would obviously drain more battery. That's what I've seen. Also HID's produce a lot of heat with the projectors, melts the lens and damages the reflector. So better go for a brighter bulb.
