  • Upgrading from RE TBTS 350 2009 vintage

Hey mates! I have keenly followed Xbhp since inception & love the community that has evovled around it. I am of 1967 vintage and used to ride an AX 100 from Ind Suzuki & more recently a Thunderbird 2009 edition. I want to now upgrade my ride. The terms of reference being:- sub 2 lakh INR budget, primary use short city hops, looking forward to using it for longer rides 300-500 kms to explore South India where i am based presently, need a stress free, vibe free ride with smooth acceleration, enough torque to carry out highway overtaking when required, comfy pillion for wifey. Following various forums on Xbhp i have homed on to the following rides that seem to fit the bill....Honda CBR 250, Himalayan, Mojo and the TB 500. For test drives of each i shall really have to make a huge effort as i am in South Kerala, Mavelikkara. My apprehensions on these rides are the Honda seems to be on its way out so maybe after sales service could be an issue and i keep reading about indifferent service pers/centres. Second the Himalyan has so much to love but its just been launched, prudence dictates to wait and watch, less power available with a pillion for company, lack of tubeless tyres and FI system casts some doubts. The Mojo on paper the specs and TD seems to be good but after sales service is a question mark Mahindra being new to the game. The RE TB 500 i have added reluctantly as it may have vibes and stressed acceleration, also quite a few riders point to tailbone aches. So there it is mates, my first post on Xbhp!! I am reaching out to the experts, veteran riders to help in clarifying my mind as i need to get back on the saddle and chase my dreams

    Query Approved

The CBR250 is a rather rev happy bike, not necessarily something you will like after a T'bird. The Mojo has zero pillion comfort, so except if you are planning extensive modifications to the pillion seat, strike it off your list. The T'bird 500 is the most natural progression from your current ride. You already know the bike quite well, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. The Himalayan is probably the closest to what you are looking for.

If i were you, a few months spent pottering around on the current bike, while keeping close tabs on the Himalayan ownership experiences across the interweb, would be ideal. After that, if the bike proves its worth, go for it, else look for something different.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Thanks Monk for approving my query. My very first post on XBhp!! I am without a bike now as in a moment of madness I sold it to a colleague who was smitten by it and I was looking to upgrade. I guess I need to wait n watch the Himalayan. In the meanwhile waiting for more comments from all of you biking fans

As you want smooth/vibefree bike.. TB500 is ruled out...
Coming to Mojo.. Pillion seat is bit Narrow.. I suggest you to check in Person as bike has good reviews..
CBR 250 is dated.. you can keep it for last/safe option..
I think you should wait and check Pulsar CS400, which will be launching in few weeks/months..

Thanks Rohit for your inputs. I have got an opportunity to take a test ride of an used CGT in the next few days. Always been fascinated by it!! Following my heart. Been an avid reader of CGT posts by Neil.Jericho, Arulpeem, MKOvuri, gopalmg and Kaushik Iyer. Without a bike right now and having to wait n watch the Himalayan's progress is driving me nuts. So i am off to check out the CGT!!

I really doubt the Continental's riding position will be ideal for highway hauls. I have ridden it myself and found it to be uncomfortable
            even within city confines.

The CBR is due for retirement anytime now. So the wise thing would be to strike it from your list.
Wait for the pulsar CS400 as it is turning out to be a really promising machine. It'll most definitely outclass the T'bird 500 in every way.
You can also check out the new avenger Street 220. Though you can get it at about half your budget, it'll easily outperform the T'bird you owned
and ticks all the checkboxes of your want list. It's very comfortable for the rider, not so much for the pillion.
You discover wisdom between a full and an empty tank
