  • Scooter for Dad

I am planning to gift my papa a scooter as replacement for his six year old Activa. Please suggest me on this aspect.

Little about him: 60+ years old and has much interest in farming though a banker by profession (retd). He has slight shoulder pain and back pain. He drives around 30/35 kms in good roads and six/ten kms bad to no roads everyday, apart from errands in the town.

Budget: 70k (Can look for pre-owned ones too as he has no affinity with the new thing)
    Age: 61
    Height: 180 cms
Weight: 78 kgs (max pay load 200 kgs)
Intended usage: Errands and Workhorse for commutes
Fuel Efficiency requirement: Min 40. Higher the better
City & Highway percentage usage: Its a rural town where he lives by. Not as hectic like Bangalore
Approximate Daily / Monthly running: 30/35 kms in good roads and six/ten kms bad to no roads everyday apart from the errands in town.
City / Town /Village of residence: Pollachi, Coimbatore
Brand / Bike type preference: Nope but I prefer no haggle kind of brand which is fill it shut it type even in maintenance sake.

Please let me know if any clarifications are required.

The new Activa is still goo but become little bulky but my personal choice would be new Vespa's they are cool but expensive.

Any 110CC scooter will do. TVS wego, Jupiter and Honda Activa are most simple and grown up looking.
Hero Maestro Edge, Yamaha Aplha are a bit more stylish and light weight.

Take your dad for test rides and buy the one that he likes the most. They are all good and you won't go wrong with any of them.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

I would recommend you either TVS Jupiter or Maestro Edge. I have driven Tvs Wego for last one year and now (2 months back - 1st service done just now) changed to Maestro Edge and I feel the Edge is much better than Wego (its my opinion only).

Suggest let him see both the scooter and if necessary take test ride and decide.!!?

I have much better relations with TVS but what do you suggest? Jupiter over Maestro or other way around?

He drives at 40/50 kmph wherever I do with 80/90kmph with them when I am home. Anything on this?
He doesn't posses enough idea on what to look into them? Even his present activa is so bad with suspension AFAIK. We're looking for something 100% functional in this case with very good SVC and long term reliability. Thanks much.

Papa doesn't need Vespa. Activa has great engine build but I doubt about the suspension and long term reliability with the new builds. Japanese are very smart when it comes to the market positioning. You get exactly what you pay for, wherever some Indian companies are little relaxed at the start and put some cash and once it has grown they will start value engineering.

I too had good relationship with TVS dealer here (Previously I purchased TVS Jive and then Wego and also recommended couple of guys to go for Tvs Jive and Wego), however I have opted for Maestro Edge because of its advanced features.

And now it proving that the performance of Edge also is good. (If you need to know more on Maestro Edge please refer to my ownership experience thread: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcyc...xperience.html

Thanks. The relationship is much more than that and so I am confined to the knowledge of their products which is no use when coming to purchase option. I'll add Mastero to the check list of scooter apart from Jupiter and Activa

All of the shortlisted scooters will do about 80 kmph depending on the weight of rider. But it is not advised because of the small tires. the problem is that even a small pebble on the road will misbalance the scoot because of the small tires, also if you brake to hard (dog on the road, jaywalkers), the small tires tend to lose grip and slip easily under hard braking. 60-65 is the safest speed for a scoot.

Both TVS and Hero will be reliable in the long term. Both have good service centers and are easy to maintain. you won't go wrong with any of them.

I'm ruling out Wego and placing Jupiter in the list
                    Hero Mastero
                    Honda Activa

This is what my list compromise of. Should I look any further? Say, Yamaha or others?

Make sure you are test riding the Maestro Edge and not the old Maestro.!!

Also you can look into new Access 125 and Aviator..!

Your shortlisted scoots are very good. Choose any one.

Yamaha offers snazzy and funky looking scoots like ray Z, usually not preferred by grown men. The only grown up scoot from Yamaha is Alpha. I myself replaced my sisters Hero Honda Pleasure with Yamaha Alpha about 2 years ago. It is very good. The only problem that you may have is service centers. There are not that many authorized service centers for Yamaha as there are for Honda's and TVS. Also spare parts may be hard to find if you live in small city. But if you live in a big enough city ans service centers are good, check Alpha out. Its good. Otherwise you have perfect options sorted.

Thanks I'll check out but this being rural town I doubt about the spares.

                          Hero Mastero Edge

Mostly I will be ruling out the activa as they are not plush as the Jupiter and Mastero Edge. I am more biased towards Mastero Edge instead of Jupiter but don't kn0ow why. Why should I pick Jupiter in place of Mastero Edge? Does it have plus when compared to Mastero Edge?

I have not used Jupiter but had the Wego for 15 months (both have same engine). Now, for the last 2 months I have been using the Maestro Edge and I find it better than Wego.

I was almost finalized the Jupiter but at that time I have seen the Maestro Edge ad and then compared both Jupiter and Edge. Eventually I went in for Edge especially because of its features like, (1) Integrated Breaking, (2)Digi Analog Meter Console, (3) External fuel filling with flap cover, (4) Mobile charging port & boot lamp, (5), multipurpose Ignition key/Swtich (single key for opening the seat, fuel tank lid, engine on/off/steering lock etc), (6) Side stand indicator - all these features are missing in Jupiter (of course only those who are interested in such features)..!
