• Selling my FZS to buy Jupiter -.. Is this a good decision?

Hi Everyone,

Please help me to take finalize on my decision. I currently own a FZS (2013). It gives mileage around 35-40kmpl. My daily commute is 46kms. I live in Bangalore. My daily route: Electronic City - MG Road. Bike is in excellent condition, no problems at all.
Then here is the reason why I am thinking of a Moped. And this is for another 3 or 4 Years after which planning to buy a quarter liter bike (This is for future).

Reason 1 - I met with an accident where I had hit the petrol very hard. And still at times feel light pain though it has come down totally. Nothing happened to Bike, it was rock still. But this has given me some mental disturbance. I had met with very bad accidents earlier with my old 100cc bikes but never I felt this.
Reason 2 - As my daily commute will increase further to 55kms, mileage is becoming a problem. I dont want to spend so 1.75L a day for Petrol. Hence want to save some bucks every month. So mileage and maintenance.
Reason 3 - Getting married in some months. So wifey can also use mine. She doesn't want to ride a Bike. Only Moped.

I don't want to go for a 125/100cc bikes just because of mileage.

So tried Jupiter and Activa. I felt Jupiter being more comfortable(I am 5'10''). But friends says for a daily 55kms (27kms one way), Moped is not a good idea because it gives backache.

Please help me on this regards. Aren't Mopeds good for a one way 27kms travel ?

Thanks

A scooter is a good idea if you are getting it to be used by you and your wife. Both the Activa and Jupiter are good products and you won't go wrong with either.

Riding that considerable distance in traffic might be easier on in the sense you don't have to worry about gear, clutch, only the brakes. Saddle comfort is a personal preference.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

In bumper to bumper traffic, a gearless scooter is a boon to ride. No clutch, no pain in wrists.
Buying the scoots also adds the usage, as your wife too can use it. Moreover the ability to carry luggage increases. You have place to keep your things in the front or under the seat storage. No back pains and more comfortable seat than bikes is always a plus.
So all in all getting a gearless scooter makes all the sense. The only thing you will not get is mileage. It will be around 45 if you have open roads and around 40 in stop and go traffic.
Both the shortlisted scoots are good. take test rides and choose the one that suits you the best.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Hi cvijaysanthoshreddy,

Choosing between bike and scooter is personal choice. My suggestion is if your budget allows, Go for Jupiter or Activa as you mentioned your wife also can use. Sell your FZ later when you think it is not really required.

Thanks.

Thank you for Approving thread.

Thank you for the advise. I am more concerned about getting backache for travelling such long distance everyday. I hope Scooter(Jupiter or Activa) should not cause that issue?

Thanks

Thank you for the valuable suggestions bro. Yup I will take all those as pros on buying Scooter. If you can answer for one more question. How about braking? Will it be as confident as in a Bike? If not at least 75% of it?

Since I just test drove them, I am unable to conclude on it. One more thing I do notice is, instead of speeding at 60 in FZ, it is safer to speed at 45 in Scooter. Is that correct?

Thanks

Engine braking is absent in Scooter though you are not going to race. Disc are boon in city's atleast where someone will jump before you in no time. You can keep FZ and scooter and if you feel one is not required you can sell the other.
Swap your bike with someone for a week if you feel so you want to experiment with the concept. Not all scooters will give you the same brand in given model, they vary as much as 10kms depending on run-in. I'm less confident when I dry scooter because of they being not heavy. Good luck.

Re: Selling my FZS to buy Jupiter -.. Is this a good decision?

Stick to a bike mate. I used to do 70-75kms daily on a Suzuki Access and trust me its more painful than a bike. Yes you will have backache for sure. Another reason is the small tank capacity they have. Every 2nd day you'll need to visit the petrol station which is infact very irritating.
Jupiter is a good scooter & so is the activa, but FZ is much better in this case.

Braking in scooters is about 70-80% of the bike. despite being the drums, the brakes do a good job in shedding the speed, what do not work is small tires. they tend to lose grip quickly in rains, sludge, sand etc. So even if the brakes are good, it is not advisable to speed on a scoot.
But you can easily manage 60+, no problems at all. anything over 60-65, is a bit risky.
So if you usually ride at around 55-60 kmph, you won't have any problems whatsoever.

Honestly two different segments actually.. Scoots are no fun on Highways... or two up for that matter.. would advise buying a used Jupiter for 60% of original cost....

That said, I own a Jupiter and happy with it... family wanted Honda but I wanted an indian company to get rich

Re: Selling my FZS to buy Jupiter -.. Is this a good decision?

My advice is- Keep the FZ, get a used Jupiter. It is an exceptional scooter. I am literally thrashing it since last 18k kms, its rock solid. The shock absorbers are best in its class and extremely reliable. I have done many 50 kms to and fro rides, so long commutes arnt an issue here. You should see the roads(or off roads) in my area. :P . You can also look for used Wego(the new model, with digital speedo & Jupiter's engine). But sometimes if U want to do some speed cruising on highways, You will miss the FZ. Scooters arnt safe over 70 kmph.

Yeah I did. But currently enjoying ride with FZ itself. Thanks for the suggestion.

Now that you have made the decision (and a good one at that), I would just like to add, keep the scooter for city errands and the wife. I have used the TVS Jupiter for an year for my commute of 52 kms daily and it is very hard on the back after sometime. And it takes a lot of time to reach the destination (compared to a bike) so the pain hurts even more. Also due to the Jupiter's main stand design, it hits very hard if you are not slow on speedbreakers/potholes. So just be a bit careful about that.

As of now I ride a Yamaha R3 for everyday commuting and I am quite happy with it.
The way you ride is the way you are..

Mate,
I am in the same dilemma since last 5-6 months. I have CBZ Xtreme which i want to sell and buy Jupiter for office commute & weekend chores.
But, it will be used by me only. Actually looking for more space than bike.
The cushion & plush ride is bike is pretty good. Riding since last 4yrs and no back pain till now. And more confident on highways/city.

Sore point is the resale of bike is less and i am hesitant to sell cheap. WIll have to look for Used Wego/Jupiter.
Also, for some reason mechanics suggest me to not buy Access and stick to bike or Jupiter/Activa. Not sure why.

Very impressed with Aprilia 150. Still thinking....

Sorry to hijack your thread.
