  • CB Shine SP vs Hero Glamour

    1. Budget - Below 1 Lakh
    2. Age - 27
    3. Height - 5' 10"
    4. Weight - 90 kg
    5. Intended usage - Office and occasional highway run (probably once/twice a month)
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any) - Above 50 kmpl
    7. City & Highway percentage usage - 70/30
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running - 20 kms (daily)
    9. City / Town /Village of residence - city
    10. Brand / Bike type preference (if any) - Hero, Honda, TVS, Baja

    Hi All,

I am planning to buy to upgrade from my Splendor NXG to a 125cc-150cc bike. The Splendor has served me for 8 years without any major problems. But, lately I've been getting only 35kmpl mileage and some problems are creeping up. Hero service center guy told me to get the engine fully serviced, which would cost around 6k. So, decided to replace it.

Now, what I want in the new bike in the order of priority are:

    1. Safety - Disc brakes is a must. Side stand indicator would be a huge plus.

    2. Mileage - At least 50 kms.

    3. Service & Maintenance - Maintenance cost should be very low and service must be hassle-free. The Hero showroom in my area offers really good service. Never faced any issues in any Hero showroom actually. When I went to ask for the exchange value of my Splendor, both Honda and Hero responded well. TVS and Baja showrooms were very poor.

    4. Comfort - I will take my wife around during the weekends for short trips in my area (3-4kms). Although no intention to ride long kms, pillion comfort would be a huge bonus.

    5. Performance - The only thing I really hated in my Splendor NXG is its inability to go beyond 60 kmph. The engine will start to strain itself and the vibration will kick in. Also, it was a huge risk going above 60 kmph without disc brakes.

I will use the bike primarily for travelling to my workplace. My office is just 5kms from my home. The route is a highway (Chennai, GST road, south of Tambaram), although it will have some heavy traffic for half the stretch.

Here's what I have so far:

Honda CB Shine SP - Meets most of my requirements. It costs more than Glamour, but has CBS and 5 speed gear box.

Hero Glamour - Meets most of my requirements. It costs less, reliable Hero service; but worried about its performance.

Honda Hornet - Although costly, it looks stunning. Also, love the front and rear disc brakes. Just worried about the mileage and the pillion comfort.

I'm torn between the Hornet and the two 125cc bikes I've shortlisted. Even if I push myself towards the 125cc segment, I can't decide between Shine and Glamour. Please advice on which bike to buy.

    Query Approved

Recently, the Glamour came out with a record sales figure. The Shine has been doing well in the market, but nothing outstanding if i remember correctly. The Shine is probably a better bike. What is the price difference between the two?
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Glamour Fi with front disc brake is around 7000 cheaper than Shine CBS version. But, the CBS version of Shine will not be available for two months.

Also, I just took a test ride of Hornet. The wide handlebar and the sporty stance didn't feel comfortable. So, I have decided to drop it.

I saw a Matte Grey Unicorn 160, and it looks good too.

The Unicorn is much more comfortable than the Hornet, at least for the pillion. Also check out the Yamaha SZ something! Supposed to be good and comfortable. And the Bajaj V15

Not gonna go for Bajaj. I am worried about the mileage and maintenance of Yamaha bikes.

Brother, one of my cousins owns a 4 year old shine and one of my best friends own a 7 year old glamour.
Both the bikes are very reliable, and very good for daily commuting. You cannot go wrong with any of them.
The only problem with older shine was lack of 5th gear, due to which the bike sounded harsh above 60kmph, but the latest model have a five speed gear box which was much needed.
Glamour is very smooth very reliable and as Hero owner, you know the service centers are good and get the job done, the same cannot be said about Honda service centers, not many people are satisfied with the Honda service centers. So find out the reviews about the service centers near you, if they are as good as Hero, then it is one less thing to worry about.
At the end it will be a matter of your personal preference. Choose the one that suits you the best.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

The more I talk with the Honda guys, the more I am inclining towards Hero. Today, I went in for a test ride of Hornet and Shine. First took a test ride of Hornet and felt it was not to my liking. Then, I asked for a test ride of Shine. They said test ride is only available for Hornet as of now. On my way out, I saw a Shine with big "Test Ride" stickers standing outside . Also, when I said I only want the CBS version, the sales guy said CBS is only a gimmick and it is not really needed in a bike.

I would hate it if the bike struggles when going at 70kmph. That's the speed (60-70) that I mostly ride. If Glamour had a 5th gear, then I would blindly go for it.

Check out the Saluto Disc version. Ticks every box. One of the lightest 125 ccs and can do 70-75 kmph all day.
And you shouldn't worry about maintenance of a Yamaha. I've a 2012 SS-125(35.3k kms) and apart from regular servicing, maintenance is almost zero.

Re: CB Shine SP vs Hero Glamour

Finally booked a Pulsar 150cc ebony black.

Yes, I was against Bajaj especially after the silent treatment meted out to me on my visit to their showroom. However, I was still not satisfied with what Honda and Hero had on offer. Honda didn't allow me to test ride Shine or Unicorn, the waiting period was high, and I have to pay extra for even the basic accessories plus the fitting charges.

Hero had only Glamour, and the lack of 5th gear and the age old looks didn't win me over.

So, went to the Bajaj showroom again. This time, they were responsive and offered a test drive. I really liked the big seats and the bike felt nice to drive. They quoted an on-road price of Rs.86,000 and said they can deliver the bike the very next day when booking is finalized. They also said if I paid in cash, I will get all the basic accessories like ladies handle, fuel tank cover, seat cover, etc. for free.

Since, I will be out of city during the weekend, I just paid an initial booking amount and asked them to keep the bike ready on Monday. Will keep posting about my experience with the bike in the bike ownership thread.

Thank you all for your advice.
