  • New scooter - Suzuki Swish (or) Suzuki Access 2016 (or) Aprilia SR 150 ?

    Hi All,

Planning to get a new scooter. Mostly will be used by my wife & intermittently by me. We have a lil princess abt 1.5 yrs old.

    - Accommodating 3 of us in the seat takes top priority.
    - Lower kerb weight
    - >= 125cc
    - Disc brake @ the front
    - Price <=85K
    - No Honda, Yamaha, TVS scooter (Nothing against them, juz that the road is full of these scooters)

After running thru all the models currently aval in the market, have short listed few models, but unable to decide between them

Suzuki Access 2016 (68K - OTR) - Really love the alloy wheel & disc brake variant, to be launched Aug/Sep 2016..Me & my wife took test ride of basic variant of this scooter, Meets all my requirement, but ride is not punchy as old scooter..

Suzuki Swish (64K - OTR) - My choice.. Initial acceleration is great, it just flies off.. I have borrowed my friends Swish on many occasion's and this one scooter which i love to ride.. Lack of Disc Brake, but my wife feels it is slightly heavier to handle..

Suzuki Let's (58K - OTR) - i considered this scooter as it was the lightest of all (98 Kgs), acceleration is not brisk.. Juz doesn't seem to pull with a pillion..Lack of disc brake..

Honda Activa 125 (70K - OTR) - Alloy wheels & disc brake are good, but scooter doesn't look appealing.. Looks too dumb. Haven't taken a test ride yet.

Vespa SXL150 (106K - OTR) - Very good looking scooter, but just over priced.. Roughly 60% more price than the average scooter price.. Sum of all the features put together, the scooter is till not worth the money..

Aprilia SR 150 (Approx 80K - OTR) - Looks apart, 240mm disc brake, 14 inch alloys, 120/70 tyres, fattest tyre on a scooter to date - to be launched in August 2016, eagerly awaiting the launch and for a test ride..

    Appreciate your inputs..

Nope.. Yamaha & Hero all have 110cc scooter..

Considered Mahindra Gusto 125, but thinking of the kerb weight of 123 Kgs, lack of disc brake, dropped it off.. It is roughly 21 Kgs heavier than the New Suzuki Access 2016

There seems to be positive review's for Aprilia SR 150.. Awaiting xbhp's review..

From the reviews, scooter seems to be 3 -4 kgs lighter then Vespa.. So i guess approx 116 - 118 Kgs is the kerb weight, think which gives it a good power to weight ratio for a scooter.. Almost 100 Ps/Ton, followed by Suzuki Lets at 88Ps/Ton and Suzuki Acces 2016 at 85 Ps/Ton..

Called up Vespa store in Chennai, and they haven't received the scooter for display yet...

But do you really think you can accommodate 3 of you in that scooter. IMO, it looks too sporty for pillion and you thinking of having your baby sit on it , is something you need to have a second thought. No offense though, Activa is best buy for a family person, especially your wife going to use it. Try the lighter version. I would stay away from the disc on a scooter as the Wheel base is small and wrongly applied, might cause serious accidents.

Me too not sure.. Waiting for the scooter to arrive in Chennai and a testride will confirm it for sure... Get your point. But prefer Disc brake only for better stopping reasons.

When my wife rides it, mostly about 50kmph.. So shouldn't be a problem..

                +1 tot he above post.
A disc brake on a scooter is an over kill.
The small wheels and tiny front suspension without much play in it is a disaster waiting to happen.
one tiny jab of the finger on the brakes and the front will wash out without any warning.
And a scooter is never going to be doing speeds that would need a disc setup to stop.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

If it is 110cc, agreed.. May be not reqd.. But if it is above 110cc, in my view it is better to have it..

I have borrowed my friends Suzuki Access / Swish many a times and have crossed 80 Km/h many times on open highways.. In this scenario, i felt that a Disc brake would have reduced speeds quickly than a drum brake would do...

Recently my dad got a scooter, Yamaha Cygnus Alpha with disc brake.. I was riding it for a good 30 km on city outskirts and felt disc brake on a scooter was real good...

You maybe right brother. I am used to my bike's large tires and big beefy front forks which are more than capable of handling emergency braking.
But I am not at all confident on a small tire and small front forks which might not have enough grip and enough play to keep the scooter upright in case of emergency braking. Even the bike's forks and tires have to work hard to find grip and balance on bad roads, so I am a bit skeptical about discs on scooter.
But you know what is best for you and your riding style. Choose the one that suits you the best.

                        I ride a R15 V2.

Its not about being right or wrong brother, what I said is purely based on emergency braking and the condition of our roads. Any body can jump on the road, nobody gives turn signals, the roads are filled with potholes and construction material. Any hard braking on any of these conditions will be trouble. I myself fell down from my bike when a jackass talking on phone crossed the road without looking, I was hardly doing 15-20 kmph, but the road was covered with fine sand, my instincts grabbed the brakes, the front lost grip (despite having sticky tubeless radial semi-slick tires), and the next second I was kissing the ground. And the guy never stopped, he stood there for 2 sec looking at me and went his way like nothing happened, still talking on phone.

There will always be such people, always be bad roads in India and a rider has to face such situations on daily basis. So its good to have decent wheels and suspension to back you up when the bad luck hits.

Under normal conditions disc brakes are always better. but under not so normal conditions other factors like tires and suspension and grip all comes to play.
I never meant to put you off the disc brakes, just wanted to let you know the downside of them (especially on a scooter).

There is nothing wrong is opting for disc brakes. In emergency situations even the drum brakes won't help in my opinion. If one can use the disc brakes correctly then I don't see a problem. I would prefer disc brakes any day. Also it depends on the rider along with suspension, tires etc.

Coming back to the topic, I would suggest Aprilia SR150 as it has a 150 cc mill, 14 inch wheels and broader tires. So opting a disc brake should not be a problem here in all honesty. It has a 6 litre tank, good power, capable of doing speeds excess of 100kph easily and sporty looks.

Precisely my thoughts too... There are many reviews out there, but no comments on the pillion space and comfort.. Also no comments on the front floor board if it can accommodate any sort of luggage..

Lighting seems to be DC on the scooter.. Think kind of first in the market...
