  • Resurrect an old motorcycle or buy a new one?

    Hello guys,

I have recently shifted to Bangalore and need a motorcycle to commute to office. My daily commute is less than 5 kms. I'm in a dilemma whether to fix my old motorcycle( currently parked at basement of my Delhi home) or buy a new one. The Motorcycle i'm referring to is a Honda Unicron 2009 model which has clocked 22k kms. Unfortunately, after a minor accident in 2014, i have not used that motorcycle.. I must have started it a couple of times in last 2 years and a regular service along with engine oil change was carried out 3 months back/ Mechanic did not report any issue during the service. The damage after the accident is very minor( handle wobbles, some scratches etc). I understand that i may have to replace tyres, Battery, some rusted parts or maybe even the tank even if it's rusted. Rough estimates to repair the above parts is around 10k. I might also need to shell out another 5-7k to transport the bike to Bangalore. Does it make sense to repair the bike considering the above mentioned fact? I don't mind buying a new motorcycle but spending a lac rupees on a new motorcycle to commute just 100 kms a month sounds like a poor financial decision.

I would really appreciate if you guys could give your opinions on this.

    Thanks.

    Query Approved and Moved

I have moved it to the 'What Bike' section, because i believe that you need to buy a new bike If you plan to repair the Unicorn will then move it to the ownership thread.

Keep in mind, that you won't just have to repair and transport the bike, but also will have to transfer the bike to Bangalore, RTO running about, road tax et al. Might not be a lot of joy!

You can on the other hand sell off your Unicorn in Delhi and buy another bike in Bangalore, so it will offset your initial 1 lakh new bike purchase cost.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

If your stay at Bangalore is short, get the old bike, get it into shape, use it and then take it back with you. That's what I did last year.

If you are going to stay in Bangalore for long, you will have to get a NOC from Delhi RTO, re-register your bike at Bangalore RTO, get new license plates, add transportation and repairs that you have in mind and it will require a lot of money and running around in an unknown city. Better to sell the Unicorn in Delhi and buy yourself a new set of wheels in Bangalore. Saves a lot of hassle in an unfamiliar city.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

        Thanks guys for the suggestion

I have decided to drop the idea of bringing the motorycle from Delhi. Most of my colleagues are of opinion that, scooter would be a much better choice in Bangalore for daily commute instead of bike. I have finally decided to buy a scooter.

        How good is TVS Jupiter?

How about the Honda Navi? I have a feeling it might be more fun. Not sure about the resale though.

I personally feel Navi isn't suitable for Bangalore roads.. More of Activa kind of scooters are good for it and plus in this you'll also have the front place to keep things which is not available in Navi.. And plus the pillion seat is very uncomfortable in Navi..

You can Also consider Hero Duet and MAESTRO EDGE.

In 125 cc segment there is The All new suzuki Access 125 (2016 Model) which is good if you like the looks.

In my area Mestro EDGE costs 61500+ with registration , insurance etc and without Any Accessories. Duet costs only rs 300/- less.

I did a test drive of Hero duet and found it very comfortable.

Do a test drive before selecting any new vehicle.
