  • Bike for touring purpose while having good handling

Guys I am looking for a comfortable bike for touring purposes. I am furnishing following detail.

Budget: not hard and fast. If i cant buy on cash, will finance it. Highest is ktm duke 390 or about 2 lacs. Minimum want a 150cc.

Previous bike: Yamaha R15 ver 1. I have used it for last 5 yrs and close to 40k kms. Bought it for touring based on feedback from journalists that it was comfortable for its class. Little did i knew it will be hard to tour on, so have done only 5-6 long 600-800 km trips in 5 yrs. Love it but i think its time to change.

About me: Am almost six feet, not fittest person out there but average. I am not skilled enough to push R15 to its absolute limit on our roads and its chassis is good enough for everything i try on it and then some. So I want something thats comfortable but handles well enough.

Bikes i have test ridden recently: Suzuki gixxer, pulsar 200 as, fazer fi, cbr250r, honda hornet, yamaha r3.

Since test rides were too small and found power between gixxer, r15 and pulsar 200as to be very close. So i decided to rent bikes and see after long rides. I have ridden following bikes for over 100 kms.

Yamaha fz: in test ride i felt fazer to be similarly powered to R15. But on extended ride, got bored on highway. This sort of cancelled gixxer and fazer from my mind.

Pulsar 200ns: great. Loved added power definitely more responsive than r15 though a test ride may not convince you. It had 35k kms on odo and was smooth and refined enough. Have me consider 200as strongly.

Ktm duke 390: just when i thought i had decided, i decided to try out this bike. Only bike i regretted giving back. Even though it gave lot of problems, used to shut down on rolling down gas regardless of speed or gear. Still loved it. Comfort problem with hard seat and wind blast is unbearable near 120 kmph.

So question is should i go for as200, or is it possible to make duke 390 comfortable enough by buying gel seat (saw sofarider gel seat on net) and a windscreen. Or am i crazy and a gixxer is much more powerful than fz.

Lot of new bikes are coming as well, cs400, g310r, tvs akula. Would prefer wind screen or fairing, upright position (so cbr250r is out). Price wise all these are doable. Want a reliable machine. Duke 390 was not free of niggles so there is that.

Also for yamaha r3, if i had budget, i dont think its too overpriced. Its very well built and twin cylinder throbbing exhaust is awesome. Very friendly and great bottom end and mid range power even though its a peaky engine. If RC 390 sells for 2.5 lacs this definitely is 3 lac machine. So overpriced but not by much.

    Thanks in advance.

    Query Approved

Do test ride the Mojo and TNT 25 as well before you finalize.

There is no guarantee that any bike will not trouble you after purchase. But the AS200 would be a good bet.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

      Hi buddy,
If budget is not a barrier, then go for ABS, it's most needed in Indian roads..

check out Mojo too, a very good tourer and everyone has lots of good things to say about it.
The only trouble is lack of Mahindra service centers in small towns.
TnT 25 is good.. but the service, maintenance and spare parts are ridiculously costly. So, do proper research before going for it.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

            Thanks for replies.

Havent considered mojo or tnt. Will look into them.

Took a long test ride for honda cbr250r. It has a front biased seating position. But bike was oddly comfortable. As if my weight was distributed and none of joints were too cramped. Dont know how it manages but it was comfortable.

CBR250 is a good tourer. More service centers than mojo. Cheaper than benelli.

CBR though ppl say it will be phased out, Honda will support it with the spares being available on order, which is a bit pain though. But the bike as is a good tourer, I am going to book mine on 17th Aug, Red ABS.

I chose it because I want a bike that can run inside city without any hassle and on highways that can help me cruise at 80kmph all day. Nothing came close to this one, and with ABS available as option, I just went for that. An dofcourse the money, my budget cap is 2L

I'm yet to buy a bike with same 2l budget. I have zeroed to Honda CBR 250R, but everyone I have inquired have asked me to wait till 2017 as they are expecting to cut off the model and may introduce 300r, and much new bikes would land up. Thus holding my decisions. Can someone please shed some light on it. Are those rumors true.

If there be no updated CBR I feel it's better to invest in 250r rather on fresh bikes.

Honda India hasn't given any news on fresh 250/300r. Where are these guys getting their info from? This rumour of CBR being stopped was going around since 2013. I don't know which Clown started this rumour, but according to HMSI, no upgrade to the CBR.

Re: Bike for touring purpose while having good handling

For touring just cancel out any bikes with displacement less than 200cc, thin seats, aggressive or forward bent posture, along with high maintenance.

Some of the options you have when it comes to touring are :
                      1. Mahindra Mojo
                      2. CBR250
                      3. Thunderbird ( the maintenance factor is big though)
                      4. Avenger 220 ( weaker engine) but nothing comes close to it in comfort.
                      5. Pulsar 400 ( upcoming)
                      6. RE Himalayan ( This is built for the purpose of touring and off roading in terrain where other bikes will eat dust generally).
                      7. UM Renegade/Commando

What I would suggest you is to get a bike that can cruise at 80-100kmph easily ( I don't like two wheelers going 100+ for safety concerns), has decent fuel efficiency and range, and is comfortable enough.
