  • Help Required! Confused on a bike upgrade for my father.

    Dear All Subject Matter Experts,

I have just been through purchasing a bike a month back, with fairing, sporty, tour oriented and dependable. It is of-course inspired by more a dream than a practical need. I am talking about N650R, what helped was the reviews and experiences of fellow BHPians.

Again the same dilemma like a father going out for suitable match for his son or daughter, but this time it is other way round i.e. a son is out in search of perfect partner for his father but the catch is that match I am talking about is a machine that will suit him and his riding style. (This is also a marriage of sort, I know all BHPians would agree on this)

He is in his 60s..5'8' good built that his existing discover 125 looked always tiny but did the job of a daily city commuting. Budget (whatever I am left with after N650R, in my kitty ) is nearly 1.5 L.

It will be my gift to him on my coming birthday, as can't see him any more on a 10+ year discover (nothing left to be discovered after all these year in that bike in my opinion). It has practically becoming unsafe by each passing day despite him spending everything possible to keep her in shape. Hard Truth Indian conditions can make any bike searching for breath after this long ridership.

Some considerations, he won't like bikes with fairing or too tall bikes..like dukes.. kind of thought on Classic 350 (RE) as he like the bike (I notice the look he gives when one pass ). My problem is the doubts that bikes is very very less reliable on lonely stretch as he loves to commute long distances on bike instead of public transport (Convenience and confidence on his riding than on an unknown driver).

Any help will be highly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Newbie650

    Query Approved

A 150-200cc bike would be ideal in my opinion. Look for a bike which is comfortable as well. An RE is a heavy bike and might not be ideal for someone 60+, though you would know better.

Do make him take test rides of various models before finalising. All the best

The Unicorn will be a great choice in my opinion. It's niggle free little bike making peak torque at lowest rpm l, great refinement and best seat comfort
When I'm on the road, I'm indestructible. No one can stop me... but they try.

While I waited for the answers, thanks for them meanwhile it is again Heart won over mind, I guess thread can be closed.

He want me to book RE350 or let it be 125 as it is, while I was showing him 150 segment e.g. CB Hornet and the reliability, technology etc but personal choice is personal.

Now I am afraid of those niggle that I hear in RE.

Dear Monk, can you post a link of an RE thread which can guide me for a happy RE experience. I mean it is hand made so is it that unreliable on occasional long route?

Thanks Man...Unicorn styling is too old school even for his taste no offense but he kind of never liked Honda don't know why?

Going to book an RE Classic 350 with keeping my finger crossed...I guess I have to buy him a service manual as well along with that bike, hope the thump is worth the trouble

Agree with Monk. Me in same situation. Thinking to get a Avy150 for Dad. RE isnt a good option, due to the weight. I guess, your Dad is more fit, hence he wont have an issue.

HoW about the aprilia sr150 scoot! would be easy for an elderly person to ride around even on long rides. plus its a bit funky and finally the intro price is mouthwatering. ask him to take a look and test ride it.

Aprilla is scooter , no offense. Did not liked any scooter after Bajaj Chetak.

By the way, booked RE350 Chestnut..finger crossed.
