  • Suggestions required for buying a new mid range (125cc-135cc) bike

    Hi Guys,

After struggling in DTC busses for past 1 month I have finally decided to buy a new bike.

This will be my first bike.

The bike will be primarily used for going office. And occasional weekend shopping.

Distance between home and office is 26 Kms (10 Km city ride + 16 Km Delhi Gurgoan Highway).

I want mileage to be at least 50 kmpl, and willing to spend up to 50K-55K
So I am stick to 125cc-135cc category.

I have following bikes in mind
    1. Bajaj Discover 135
    2. Honda Stunner
    3. Yamaha Gladiator
    4. Hero Honda Glamour

On paper Bajaj Discover looks best, and after looking at specifications and reviews I had decided to buy that bike only but today when I went to Bajaj showroom, I was not that happy with the look of new Discover. So am again in dilemma.

Please post your experiences and comments about above bikes. So I can make a informed decision.

Also if someone has any other bike best suited to my requirements please mention that also
No Matter Whether Guys buy 220cc Pulsars or 350cc Royal Enfields,
It is used only to follow a 80cc Scooty Pep...

hi,all the bikes mentioned above return a fuel effiiciency of 50+....since you didnt like the looks of the new discover, then amongst your other 3 choices, the Glamour returns the best fuel efficiency......the Stuner and Gladiator are both lovely bikes with a slightly sporty overhang....both are exceptional and the best in class......both return 50+ kmpl....the stunner luks the best in class and will retain its gud luks for a long time amongst other bikes also....plus you get the Honda reliablity.......my personal pick will be the Honda Stunner followed closely by the Yammy Gladiator.....you should take a good test ride to see if you are comfortable on them....
You can take the ride away from me but you cannot take the rider out of my soul.........

Why not look at Honda Shine? Looks decent, Good mileage 55+, refined engine. just a suggestion. But going by the list you have made
i would pick yamaha Gladiator SS, close second comes the Stunner.
Bikes don't spill oil, they mark their territory.

I second motormania... I would also suggest the stunner or the gladiator... I am a owner of the gladiator myself.... Mileage is between 50-60 depending on how you ride the bike... The bike doesn have a great pull but has a decent or rather a good top end for a 125cc bike... Handling is superb... I personally haven ridden the stunner so dont no much... But i have heard good reviews of the bike n its definately a looker... I think you should test ride all the bikes u mentioned ( discover 135dts-i, glamour, stunner, gladiator) to choose the best bike for you... Lot of factors will come into play like your height, the weight of the bike, riding posture etc... Each bike will offer something different for sure... So its best for u if you take a good long test ride of each bike...

Gladiator for all the right reasons...

Then may be the Hero Honda Acheiver...

The Glamour does its job really well.

Stunner...very good.. but more show than go. I am surprised how the GLady and Stuner cost teh same... when the Stunner was launched we fould a good 7K difference between these two!

A bigger surprise is that you didn't like the looks of Discover 135. I think, except for those really stupid tank scoops, this bikes looks very good. That tail lamp is ah... just so devil-ish

Thanks to all the members for their valueable comments.

@HydBiker Those stupid tank scoops really turned me off, mech said they even cant be removed as they have indicators on them.

Hero Honda Glamour has Max Power of 9 BHP as compared to 11-13 Bhp of other bikes.

So how it will result in turms of user experience like it will have less pick up or what (I am quite new to Bikes.)

Better if someone can please explain that how various factors Like CC, Max Power and Max Torque affect the User experience.

One more thing. I am looking for a decent looking bike ie not with lot of fiber.

since you are looking at a bike withe less of fiber, then Yamaha Gladiator is the one for you...looks superb, fantastic engine, lovely handling and good efficiency...since its your first bike, you would like it to be special..so this is it for you.......Glamour will feel underpowered and lacking the fun factor after riding for few months..but the Yammie will defintly keep you impressed.....take the RS Glady n feel like mini-Rossi

One more bike is there XCD 135 which looks good.
Stunner would be the base version without disc and self so the low price.
According to me Gladiator is the best.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

                      You said this :-->

Distance between home and office is 26 Kms (10 Km city ride + 16 Km Delhi Gurgoan Highway).
So, most of the time the bike would see 40+ kmph speeds, I perceive...

I strongly suggest Yamaha Gladiator. It does almost everything right, although city riding may require a bit more gearshifts, but it's acceptable by anyone, I feel.

My reasons, suited to your needs are:-->

                      1. Top Speed is maximum here,
                      2. High level of Refinement noticed at high speeds,
                      3. It will save you a cool Rs. 7000 something over stunner. For the same 11 horsepower & 5 Gears.
                      4. Stunner will give some 61 kmpl mileage, Gladiator will return 67 kmpl something, due to higher gearing...
                      5. A Tachometer on Gladiator will help a bit in efficient shifting,

For your needs, I find Gladiator just perfect. Mark my words, "You'll love it!" ///

I am lucky enough to own both of these two great machines albeit the previous iterations. I have a Discover 125 and the Gladiator DLX. But I hope my experiences with both of these machines would help you in making your choice since the new Gladiator SS/RS and the Discover 135 aren't much different from there predecessors.
                        The Gladiator then.
                        Pros:Killer Looks,Racing bike feel,5 gears,top end,handling.Very-very comfortable for 6 foot people.
Cons:Poor low end torque, exhaust note is not to everyone's liking, availability of spares, rusting issues, severe mileage drop with age.
My views: The Gladiator is an excellent bike that is marred by some practicality issues that may hamper your everyday ride. The headlight, for instance,is very weak to the point that going out at night is suicidal. Not good if you return from office/work/college late.
The torque at lower end isnt good. With a heavy pillion the bike does feel strained. Even without a pillion be ready to be left behind the crowd of other 125cc bikes in short distances. Only if you rev the bike as hard as it's meant to be ridden, will you stay ahead.
Maintenance cost is quite high and with age you may have to change quite a number of parts. Spares are an issue.
On the plus side, the bike feels rock stable at high speeds and that planted feel around the corners is a joy to behold. The first time you get on the Gladiator, trust me you will be entering corners at speeds you wouldnt have dreamed of.
The Gladiator than is like a Gladiator,it will chew away miles endlessly. But do remember:the Gladiator is good only as long as it's ridden hard and fast and by people who dont give a damn about the mileage.
You have already read about other people's views about the Gladiator so I wont carry this further on.

                        The Discover.
Pros:Excellent torquey engine, comfort, sound, good mileage even when pushed to it's limits.
Cons: Looks aren't the best, only 4 gears, slight vibrations above 60,seating position is a bit cramped for tall riders.
My views: As far as I see, the two things that work against the Discover are the looks(subjective) and the lack of fifth gear which it needs very badly. Not to mention the bike is not unique anymore. Lot's of them on the road(not the new model though). The other minus point is the airlock issue that plagues Bajaj's bikes. If you keep your bike under the sun for a long period then be prepared for stalling issues just after you start riding.(there's a way round that though )
On the plus side,I feel the Discover is a most understated bike. Its 'pure commuter' image has completely overshadowed the fact that it's the most fun filled 135cc/125cc out there. The first time you fire up the engine and hear the metal gurgling of the exhaust, you will fall in love with it. Not to mention the biggest plus point with the Discover,in the everyday runs to the office and the college is that it always has power. No matter what situation you are in,no matter what gear, the Discover has the power to pull you through. And pull the pillions with ease too.
The headlight is strong unlike the Gladiator.
Around a track(not a proper one),I have kept up with the Gladiators (mine and a Type JA) and passed them many times. There's so much torque infact that even though the Gladiator may enter the corner first but the Discover will always be the faster one out.
The Discover does all the things that the Gladiator does but IMO its more pleasing. The torque, the sound and the mileage will always keep you smiling. Maintenance costs are cheap and so are the spares. No rusting issues that I can report. In my three years of owning the bike,I changed nothing except the clutch plates and that too because every TDH learned to ride on my Discover.
The Discover than is the ideal choice for city runs. Its fast, frugal and fun.But it will leave you with a yearning inside you whever you come home: 'I wish it had 5 gears.'
                        And that's hard.

Why don't you have XCD 135 on your list? BTW, if you can afford a Unicorn, go for it without a second thought!

Have you taken any test rides of the bikes you have mentioned? i suggest you take a test ride first and then discuss here.
and if you can extend your budget a little , then you can buy honda unicorn which has all the criteria you are looking for. just think about it.

before anything test ride the bikes
