  • Help me get my First MT Bike

    Hi Everyone,

This is my first post. I've been spending a couple weeks here to learn about Manual Transmission bikes. Help me to get one

    1. Budget - 1 to 1.3 L (max extendable)
    2. Age - 29
    3. Height - 5.4'
    4. Weight - 75 Kgs
    5. Intended usage - Occasional office commute; Looking for weekend highway outings and quarterly planned touring
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement - Anything between 35 - 50 (I know the higher slab is a bit ambitious)
    7. City & Highway percentage usage - 35 and 65 (Not very accurate, +- 5 % )
    8. Approximate Monthly running - City - 400 Kms; Highway - 1500 - 1700 Kms;
    9. City / Town /Village of residence - City riding in Chennai. Weekend highway - nearby places like Tada, Pondicherry etc
    10. Brand / Bike type preference - I've been riding the Suzuki Access since 2009. Have clocked around 40k on it. Haven't been a regular visitor to the service station, so a pretty contended owner

The inspiration for bike touring started while I across some of the travelogues and envied at their joy they experience while riding their machines. So I learnt to drive a 'geared' bike (Pulsar 150) to see how I fare. Surprisingly I loved the way the machine responded, the joy of changing gears and the clutch - gear - throttle combo Brought a lot of smile on me

So, I started to search for a bike that gives great comfort, relaxed riding and has decent power to much the miles. Not really interested in sporty bikes (why the pillion should sit a floor higher ?? ) and crouched riding. So, looking for a machine that's very comfortable and very reliable. Will add more details if you guys ask me.

    Query Approved
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Re: Help me get my First MT Bike

Well Seeing your post this purchase is going to be your first bike and with your budget these are the bikes i can list down
Honda Hornet 160 top end commuter and good performer on highways (I have not ridden it but heard and read a few reviews about it)
Gixxer Sf or Gixxer same as above and very good buy
Pulsar AS 150 or AS 200, Pulsar 220 ( 200 is on performance side but check for availability) split seats
TVS Apache RTR 200 4v another 200 performance oriented machine and good seating position with split seats (not a floor higher as you mentioned)
Bajaj Avenger 220 very relaxed seating and a good tourer in your budget range
RE Bullet 350, bullet classic 350 and Electra -Good tourer relaxed riding
      Karizma ZMR

I have missed other bikes based on your budget and also on your non liking of aggressive seating position, If you will to stretch a few more thousands
you have Yamaha R15S better than R15 V2 Super reliable, sporty and performance oriented 150cc bike
Honda CBR 150R another 150 from Honda in competition to R15
Pulsar RS200 sporty and performance oriented machine

Just Test Ride these bikes and decide. Can give you more better opinon if you have shortlisted a few by yourself.

Thanks Abiram. Test drove the Hornet. Superb engine but not much convinced with the riding posture. Though I liked Pulsar, felt uncomfortable after spending a significant time on it.

Looking at Avengers and RE. Don't know which RE will suit my height and budget. Reliability of both the bikes is a very big concern. I will be a leisure tourer not expecting to cruise more than 80kmph. So the safety offered by these bikes are enough I believe.

Read a good number of travelouges on RE, and a comparatively less on Avenger. For the most part, RE had the benefit of either literate owner or a team to help with the niggles. Avenger has been pretty solid, but the vibrations at higher cruising speeds was a negative.

The problem is, I don't have enough options at this budget and the available aren't much convincing.

I want to get a bike in a month or so..

Dear Sid, I own a Hornet from last 10 days and clocked 950 km. Initially, I was also worried on riding posture since prior to this, I had ridden only splendour. I took some time but now I feel I am riding splendour only with a bigger engine. Mean to say that, you will get acquainted yourself with it. Take a longer test drive to know more.
