• A Sensible & Reliable buy!

Hello everybody!

This forum had helped me buy my first bike, the R15 V2.0 in 2013. Thanks a lot for that! I rode it for two full years in college, and had to sell it off as I had to relocate to Mumbai because of my job. But now I am back to Kolkata, and need a new bike immediately. I intend to keep the bike for at least five years, and hence need a reliable machine.

I have two choices:

1. Get back to my first love and buy the R15 V2.0 again. The power, for me, is mostly adequate, and I was in love with the reliability of the bike. I never had a singe issue with it and I have hardly seen people complaining about anything too serious about it in the service centres.

2. The Duke 200. I really like the way it looks, loved to ride the TD model as well. I have a couple of questions regarding its reliability. Has KTM/Bajaj taken care of the following:

a) Engine oil leakage.
b) Fork oil leakage.

I am really looking forward to get this bike, but oil leakage from the engine would be very depressing. Had KTM offered an extended warranty, I would not have bothered so much. Also, can I expect it to return an FE figure of around 30-35 kmpl?

How expensive the regular consumables (company recommended engine oil, brake pads) would be compared to the Yamaha?

Also, how expensive major jobs (clutch overhauling, engine overhauling) would be compared to the Yamaha?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to your replies!

Dear Rider,

The way I see it you have 3 options.

1. Go with the latest version of your Tried and Tested Bike. R15. You know it inside out and know what to expect from it, so it will be a good buy.

2. Go with Duke. I have seen many of those in my office parking lot and oil leakage was the one thing I never saw them do, neither did the riders ever gave such a review (in my Pune office atleast)
Complaints if at all any were, pillion comfort, Posture issues, expensive regular consumables as you've said, and one off case of chassis break/damage in case of collision.

I've ridden the bike and its fun to ride it, Was one of my 3 choices, and was left out only due to lack of Pillion comfort.

3. Since you've already experienced the r15, a fully faired bike, and now you May be Looking for an Upgrade, to a slightly bigger bike, you can check CBR 250r.

But thats totally upto you and only after TD of all bikes!

Re: A Sensible & Reliable buy!

R15 V2 is the safest bet. But would not be an upgrade in power.

D200 would have about 6 horse power more, but you may have to face small niggles. But these can be ignored once you get on the saddle. Its a hoot to ride. Moreover this is the most reliable generation of D200, all the major issues that it had were ironed out by KTM. So you should not face major issues like oil leakage or busted seals.

Take test ride and then decide.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

The TVS Apache RTR 200 would be my choice but immediate availability may be a concern and you might've to wait a little.

if you are buying an R15, may i suggest buying a pre owned bike?
You'll save a ton of money from the depreciation, and since you know the bike well, you'll know all the problems to look for.

Thanks rugved for your suggestion. The CBR250R is a great bike, but would be a little out of my budget since I intend to pay entirely by cash and the FE would be a concern for me.

That's great news then Ankey! The Duke 200 is something I am really looking forward to. Now what I am mainly concerned about the FE and the major service costs.

Thanks Retro, but I am more or less inclined towards buying anything between the R15 and the Duke 200.

Thanks gr33nhorn for the suggestion. I agree that I would be able to save a lot of money if i get an used bike, but I won't really get the peace of mind.

I happened to meet two Duke 200 owners last week.
Guy 1: very sane rider, doesn't rev up the engine much, takes extremely good care of the bike, rides in city and reports an FE of around 30 kmpl (maximum), and 27 kmpl (worst case).
Guy 2: not that sane of a rider, takes less care of the bike, rides in the same city as well, and reports an FE of "at least" 35 kmpl..
Both said that they used the "tankful to tankful" method to measure the FE. This has left me extremely confused regarding the actual FE of the bike. Duke 200 owners please help!

Also please throw some light on the major service expenses, like engine overhauling, clutch overhauling.

Just curious about something. I have read quite a number of times in this forum, that the engine oil consumption of the Japanese bikes are very less. How does the Duke 200 fare in this regard?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to divert your attention on new launches ! How about waiting till festive season to check any new launches with Yamaha, might come up.
Like R15 v.3, MT-03 (priced less than R3). Just a suggestion. However dealers and Yamaha Customer Care are tight lipped on any new launch.

Moderators, kindly close this thread, as I am seeking assistance from the Duke 200 owners' thread.
