  • Occasional Commute and Weekend Getaway ride!

    Hi Folks,

Planning on buying a new bike after a long time.
Note : Haven't used a bike since ages, though I have had a Pulsar 150 classic and a Hero Splendor which I used extensively way back at home when I was in high school.
However, that was 6-7 years ago, since then my motor-biking skills have become pretty rusty!
While I have been longing to buy a bike capable enough for weekend tours, taking me away from the redundant office life and also polish my rusty photography skills - I honestly couldn't do it mostly due to the budget flowing towards my computer gaming rigs and home labs/servers.

Now I have decided to give it a shot and hence here I am at xBhp, willing to participate in the motorbiking experience.
However, to switch on the ignition and set things in motion I need a bike and thus below are my requirements/preferences/budget.

    Budget : ~1,00,000 INR.
    Location : New Delhi.
    Personality : Slim build/65kgs with 5.8(+-1)" height.
Riding preference : Biased towards comfort, power and engine reliability.
Time : Intend to buy as soon as possible, probably within couple of weeks. [ Just need to sort of some documentation stuff ]

I did some R&D in the motorbike segment ~100k inr, and I shortlisted the below in order of preference :
    1. Bajaj Avenger 220 Street/Cruise
    2. Pulsar AS 200
    3. Suzuki Gixxer
    4. Yamaha Fazer

While I am pretty focused on Avenger 220 but before I finalise it, I have some queries :

    Comfort
    1. Is this the most comfortable bike within 1.5 Lakh when it comes to long rides on highways and semi-Himalayas/Hills ? I have chronic stiffness in upper back and neck due to postural issues ( forward bent posture ) and thus looking for something which doesn't cause posture problems.

    Maintenance
    2. I had a Pulsar 150 Classic way back in High School and tbh, I ended up spending most of my pocket money in it's maintenance. The gearbox was quite effed up and the engine also felt very unrefined. Though the bike had enough power to satisfy but it was a PITA to maintain.
My parents aren't happy with my decision to buy a Bajaj's bike due to this.

    Alternatives
    3. How is this compared to a used Royal Enfield ? Let's say I get a good condition Enfield ~1lakh.

    Height/Riding stance
    4. The bike has low slung seating position, so I am wondering if at 5.8-5.9" of body height would it still be comfortable enough ?

    Pricing
    5. Does the pricing differs across various dealers and showrooms, like electronic/computer goods ?

    Handling
    6. How is the bike's handling in city ? Delhi's streets are pretty damn crowded and my skills are a bit rusty, so will this bike cause issues in traffic ?

    Acceleration/Top Speed
    7. Ahh....well, while I honestly don't intend to ride at anything above 100 km/hr on a bike and neither accelerate too hard, yet I would love to know how well does this bike fares in terms of top speed/acceleration. Can this do 0-60 in less than 5 sec ?
    -----------

    Questions regarding Documentation :

    Driving License :
I must confess that I used to ride my previous bike in high school, and didn't had a Driving license back then. After I moved out of home-town, I didn't feel the need to drive a bike until now and thus I have to get a Driving License too asap.
However, I don't reside at my permanent address (Gujarat) anymore. In Delhi, I am residing at a rented establishment and only have a Vodafone bill on my current address. besides the fact that I am employed in Delhi from past few years.
Is there any way I could get my driving license made from Delhi ? I am ready to take the "pay the extra" route but I need it soon.

I only have Election Card/Pan Card/CBI Passbook based on my Gujarat's address.

    Bike Registration :
Since I don't have a permanent residence proof of Delhi, so I suppose I will also encounter some issues in getting the bike registered in Delhi. What options do I have for this ?

Besides the bike, I am really looking forward to some help on documentation. I have the cash lying with me, ready to be spent but having hard time with documentation.

    Looking forward to your opinion/help.

    Query Approved

I have never been too convinced about comfort on a feet forward motorcycle. But that's my personal opinion.

If you are living on rent, then you will have a rent agreement in your name. You can use that to get your documents. Else, it would be more convenient to get it done from your hometown itself, if you have someone there to do the legwork.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Are you certain that a rent agreement would suffice? Some are saying that rent agreement isn't a valid proof of residence, at least not for Delhi's RTO.

How about those agents at RTO? Can they get things done in lack of proper docs, or it's just a bluff to juice some money?

Now coming back to the bike, do you have any other recommendation for bike other than avenger in terms of comfort? I used to like the Karizma R, but that thing isn't available any longer.

This is how it works in Bangalore RTO:
Rental Agreement + Electricity Bill + HR letter from whichever company you work in completes the address proof requirement.
Loan eligibility is calculated based on 3 years of form 16 documents.
        Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

          Thanks that looks promising.
So a rent agreement has to be notarized, right? Can you shed some light on the type of rent agreement?
I do have the electricity bill of past few months including current but obviously it's on my landlord's name.
Getting a letter from company's HR/Portal should be piece of cake.

I will visit an nearby showroom to see if they accept it.

Even a registered Rent agreement was not admissible when i tried registering vehicle in even here in HYD, however a passbook for a local branch bank account was what i used, No Greasing Needed with that

Crowded places may not go very well with the turning radius of an Avenger.

If you Are not planning to be in the existing city for too long, and do not want to get into the hassles of Registering a new bike, and then transporting it to another state when you move. Then you can even look for a trustfully cared, used bike. Which you can even sell away when you move or if the comfort is not up to the expectations!

Nah, not real interested in buying a used bike, specially nothing from Bajaj. I could have given a thought to RE, but that doesn't really suits my personality plus their maintenance.

I was thinking thay what if I buy the bike in Gujarat and get it registered there, then bring it here to Delhi somehow. Is there any paperwork involved in this? Can someone briefly explain to me what's the typical procedure of riding another state's registered bike in a different state?

Also, if the above isn't too difficult then in that case can I get the bike delivered in Delhi but register it from Gujarat to avoid the hassles in transportation via train? I obviously can't ride a new bike 1000kms in it's early day. That would be too much for it as well as for me.

We have the eStamp paper funda in Bangalore, so all the rental agreement matter is printed on that paper. It is notarized (a stamp + signature basically) at the eSeva kendra itself. There is a dedicated person just for this stuff.

Otherwise, an agreement on a Rs20/50/100 stamp paper with a notarized signature would do just fine.

I bought a car with the above setup, no agents involved. The dealership just asked me to scan and share the docs, I didn't even visit the office. It was cleared in a day. Just ensure that all the documents are relevant, like the current year's rental agreement, relevant form 16s, HR's letter not older than 3 months etc.

Re: Occasional Commute and Weekend Getaway ride!

Why go for a 150cc when more powerful 200cc bikes are within your budget?

Add the TVS Apache RTR 200 to your shortlist. This bike has comfortable ergonomics, adequate power and excellent build quality. Only issue with this bike maybe immediate availability, you should check with your local TVS dealers.

The Bajaj Pulsar AS 200 gets better touring hardware like a tall windscreen, projector lamps, an aerodynamic semi-fairing, perimeter frame and an overdrive 6th gear for effortless cruising on the highways. The issues with this bike maybe small niggles and average fit & finish.

You should decide between these two motorcycles depending on your taste. Taking a TD of both bikes will make that decision much easier.

Thanks. I have considered 200 AS in the list, however I have never really been a fan of TVS Apache MotorBikes. Their riding stance seems too forward bent and also aggressive. Plus their bikes lack performance as compared to Pulsar 200 NS.
I usually don't bias my decision on looks, it's mostly comfort and a bit of performance. I am not really a speedster though.
This weekend I will try to visit nearby dealers and contact some RTO agents to figure out what's the deal here.
If things don't sort out I will look for getting the Bike ordered in hometown and look for ways to getting it delivered here.

So I am visiting my hometown this week for getting my DL.
Also went to a Bajaj showroom nearby and he said he will be able to help arrange some Documentation for additional charge of 1200-1500rs and needs just an ID card and address.

Re: Occasional Commute and Weekend Getaway ride!

Update : Got my LLR last week and will be getting permanent by next couple of weeks.
I am all set to buy the bike this week, but have some questions.
What all things I should check before I do the payment and Can I ask for a Test Ride with LLR?
And are there any chances of my RTO registration getting denied at RTO due to documentation? I don't have local address proof, so the dealer will take 1200-1500rs and make a LIC bond. However I am not sure whether it's legit or what. Is there any chance of them making fraud docs for sake of selling the bike?
What will happen if I pay the money and get the bike but my RTO form gets denied later on?

Since I usually don't like loose ends, so just wanted to update this thread and thank you all for your valuable input - which eventually helped me in purchasing Bajaj Avenger 220 Street.
I bought this bike on 28th October 2016.
