  • Posting for a friend !!! Beyond my wisdom.

    Hi all,

This is me posting on behalf of someone close, who is an avid rider. The choices are so weird that I've turned to the forum for wisdom.
This is not for me ... so please don't advise based on what you might know about me. My decision is already made here.

This is going to be his 'everything bike' ... for the street ... for the twisties and the occasional (rare IMO) tours. There might be a pillion involved at times (Not sure who ... so can't tell you about weight).
He is single (and hence assuming would be same on the bike too ) and likes to live life before his fear of 'family' catching up to him. He has experience with liter class vehicles abroad and not much in any segment in India. He is going all down/no-loan for the purchase.

    The contenders ...

    1. Triumph Street Triple 675

This was always his choice and he has been saving for. I too lust after this bike but not fully support the idea.
The sound track is amazing in the city and the build quality is superb.
It has a larger tank with a range of about 200Kms (Important as not all petrol pumps can be trusted)
The seat is amazing and has a comfortable riding stance inspite of it being forward biased.
I think the detuned version is perfect as it helps with acclimatization to Indian traffic while having great power for Indian roads.
Pretty much out of showroom not requiring any additional accessories.

The Street Triple I ride scrapes speed breakers even without a pillion. Though if you are a little careful I think the straight bits are dreamy.
The mileage is around 18-20 kmpl which is important as it is a daily-use vehicle.
It heats up in Hyderabad traffic *ridiculous traffic*
As much as a head-turner it is; tis impossible to park out of sight as people get attracted like flies messing with everything.
8K service prior 1000kms and 10K per service for 1yr or 10000kms since and then maintenance.

    2. Triumph Street Twin

The new 900 HT motor is amazing in my honest opinion for the city. It pulls like a dream from very low RPMs.
It doesn't scream like a Banshee and is very subtle.
It looks amazing in Matt black.
It doesn't heat up at all for all the time that I used it.
Has Ride-by wire, Traction Control, ABS and progressive brakes, though the bite is missing.

The problem I had is ... also like the street triple ... the bottom scrapes with a pillion (Guy weighs 70-80 Kgs I guess).
It has a waiting period in Hyderabad taking longer for the Matt Black he wants putting it awfully close to 2016 end for registration (Depreciation hits sooner in case he wants to let go of it)
The seat, though looks comfy, is difficult while sitting in traffic for ages.
The handle-bar strangely was not comfortable for him ... but that is to blame on his broken shoulder. Found the ST better.
The mileage figures are surprising ... just trundling around in the city it returned an amazing 28 kmpl for its 10 lt usable tank and 22-24 kmpl on highway.
The chain needs frequent lubing and has terrible access.
Pretty much out of showroom not requiring any additional accessories.
I'm not really into the looks as I find it disproportionate. Though everyone else thinks its ok.

    3. Ninja 300 KRT Edition

This is my choice and he really doesn't like the idea though it was his first choice of track-bike in the US. But it comes with ABS in the US and not in India. I personally wouldn't care ... but him is difficult as he is not used to Indian riding.

The Ninja costs half as much as the above options.
You can replace the stock tyres, and change the brake lines and brake pads ... I think its ready to go.
The power is perfect for our road conditions. Not too much or not too low.
The mileage is awesome and will give a tank range of 450-500 kms with its massive tank. Just lesser runs to petrol pumps.

The Ninja feels very small and is definitely under-powered compared to above options.
The Green was not bearable *thanks to KRT livery it is better now*
Missing ABS but can be livable without.
No test drives *Needed to understand how it feels in India traffic*
Extremely bad Customer service at Hyderabad Dealerships.
No idea about how service is in Hyderabad

Though almost everything might be covered ... the problem is everything is covered *thanks to me* and it confuses the hell out of the decision maker.
When I'm on the road, I'm indestructible. No one can stop me... but they try.

Budget? There might be other nakeds which would be decent tourers and great for city commutes.

His budget's around 9 lakhs. Sorry should have mentioned why the others were ignored. Let him type out the stuff. But I think what hit the nail in the wall was the quality of the Triumph products and professionalism of Triumph people (only could be replicated by Benelli people)

      1. Kawasaki Z800 Again, something I liked and he hated. The seat is too hard for his comfort and the posture apparently was 'painful'. The pillion seat was also similar. The experience in showrooms in Hyderabad is so bad that he doesn't want to buy it out of fear of facing similar behavior post sales. No bikes shown and no test-drives given which is surprising as people who just want to take review videos were offered bikes for drives but not ones who want to buy. I have to agree to that as much as I lust after the Z800.

      2. Benelli TNT899 Something he liked, I lusted for and still rejected. This bike is a monster .... absolutely amazing. The people at Benelli, Hyderabad were amazing. And this is the real Italian deal ... but no electronic aids is an absolute no no. The bike is very heavy and the tail slides I was having was not because of power but the sand and gravel on miserable Hyderabad roads.

      3. ER-6n Out right rejected. No reason given. "Just don't like it".

      4. Ducati Scrambler Strong contender for all the reasons that the Street Triple was chosen even though this is a 'Scrambler' class. The promise of After-Sales service in Hyderabad was not convincing and this was going to be very difficult to maintain if something goes wrong due to extra long wait times.

Didn't like tourers like the Versys 650, Tiger XR*. Showed the Duke 390, Benelli TNT300 & TNT600, Honda CBR 650F ... didn't like those either. Took him to the Harley showroom and almost got clothes-lined. I also found a few decent examples of pre-owned vehicles but insistence was on new.

        Okay.

I haven't ridden the new Bonnies, but among the older variant, as much as i liked the base version, the Thruxton wasn't very commute friendly, especially with the narrow width handlebar.

Hopefully the ST would be easier to use in traffic!

The Street twin is something that seems good for the city. If you are not used to the Bonnie then you got to be extra careful as there is some ridiculous torque very low down. I was able to let the tail out at 30 kmph without changing gear. It's a shorty .... Just doesn't feel like a Bonnie. But again it is not from the Bonnie line .

Sounds better than the old Bonnie as it has a rumble rather than a whistle.

since your friend is planning on touring, the bike should be easy to repair in case the bike gets damaged. For a few of the imported bikes it take a lot of time for the spares to arrive at the dealership. My 2 cents.

Ninja 300 is sufficient for streets and has enough power and also wont get too heated in traffic and can be a good tourer too if riding alone or with desi bikes. If you want a higher speeds on highways but also a city commute then I guess the new Ninja 650 looks promising though it can heat up in traffic.
Unfortunately there are no bikes which can do well in both city and highways with lot of power, this demand is mutually exclusive unless the city commutes are very short like < 5kms.
If you want best of both then lesser CC is the way to go and any of N300/D390/TNT300 fits the bill.

Its mostly city and rare tours ... but point noted.

No Dukes or Benelli (unless its the 899/1190) ... I'm a big fan of the Ninja 300 and my first preference. But it could have been easier to sell to him if it were the Z300. Faired bikes have their share of problems ... and Kawasaki in Hyderabad is terrible. No point in getting a good bike with terrible ASS.

The Street Twin is by far the best high displacement motorcycle one can use inside the city. I had the fortune to ride one for a day and boy she blew me away! Worth every penny for the TTC, ABS and ride by wire. Gave pretty decent FE as well. Was able to manage around 23kmpl! i would say it's more usable than the Striple as well, because torque is delivered way lower (just a personal opinion).

Ask your friend to look at Yamaha's R3 as well. That bike is a commutourer, you can use it for track days with rearset pegs, and the stock seating position is awesome for city rides and touring, if needed.

+1 to the above post. Ninja 300 or R3 would be really good options if lack of ABS is not a problem.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Being a long time bonnie fan, I've to agree that the Street twin is absolutely amazing. Loved the bike for its versatility. You can even use it for grocery runs. The build quality is top-notch though I felt the Bonnie was better made. The suspension was taut, but still far better than anything else. And the wave of torque ... 80NM at 3230 rpm will put a big grin on your face.

He has a broken arm and hence Clip-ons are an absolute no-no. Prefers regular handlebars and hence nakeds. Even at that I've pushed the case of N300 considering how amazing it looks in that KRT livery. Also a personal experience being that Yamaha service is terrible around the place we live.
