• Need an upgrade to my 150 cc to ??

Hi xBHPians,

Currently I am owning a Yamaha FZ 16 2011. I would like to upgrade to 250 cc or 300 cc. But what I really want is upgrade to higher power options. amazing throttling and adrenaline rush kind of bikes.

First preference is YZF R 3. But Since my dad is also helping me in financial terms, He says 3.7 lakhs is too much. So I am looking out for other options

1. Age - 30

2. Height - 5'9"

3. Weight - 70 kgs

4. Commute - Everyday use and weekend touring

5. Place I reside - Coimbatore (Since I am in coimbatore, I'll be touring regularly to valparai, ooty, kodai, yercaud, yelagiri, chennai & salem(native))

6. FE - 30 -35

7. Budget - 2.5 laks

NOTE: not interested in naked bikes. not interested in RE(RE owners pls excuse)

What is your budget? The CBR250 maybe?

The best bet would be the 2017 KTMs, if you are willing to wait for a few months (till the niggles are sorted out). Coming from a Yammy (fill it and forget it nature), you might have to sacrifice the refinement and trouble free ownership a bit, but given the cost and value for money for the KTMs, small troubles can be ignored.

Else CBR250R is the answer. A Japanese bike with more power and ABS, in other words a proper upgrade in terms of power (if you don't mind the outdated looks).

If you can convince your family, R3 all the way.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Boss, for acceleration rush and adrenaline pump, Dukes are best.

CBR250 gives you speed without much noise; at 4000 rpm you can't hear the engine on the highway. CBR is a sports tourer, not a street/track bike, so although you go fast, it doesnt feel fast.

I own the CBR 250 and its a fine ***** for every day riding. Parts of the rc like mirrors cost more than the CBR. Do test ride both bikes, and wait for the new Dukes to make your decision.

Thanks for approving. I did TD the CBR250. It was awesome. It has got the power and revs up smooth. Loved it. Do you guys think they would update the model as of now?

Guys ! Almost convinced with CBR 250. I would like to know how long should I wait for 2017 KTMs? Any idea?

And also can I consider R15 V3? I know it doesn't belong to 250 to 300 cc category. But V3 would come up with better upgrade? Any ideas about that?

For the first query. I wouldn't hold my breath for the CBR250R upgrade, have been waiting for quite some time now and still no reliable news, just rumors.
Same for the R15V3, they say it will be available in 2017, but I would take it with a pinch of salt.

For KTMs 6 to 8 months of waiting would be recommended. The first batch of current gen KTMs had all sorts of electrical issues which got better with every new batch, and with new generation, new problems will surely occur. Hence a wait of 6 to 8 months would be wise so that you do not become the test mule for the company.

At the end if you want a bike right now, get the outgoing KTMs, but if you have a means of transport now and can wait for a few months, then you get a brand new bike along with all the exclusiveness.
Choose wisely.

Sure Brother, at this point going into wait and watch mode would be best. The best case scenario is that R15V3 will be launched and then you will have options to choose from. Worst case, even if R15V3 is nowhere to be found, you'll have the KTMs.

I would advise you to keep an eye out in forums like Xbhp and read the ownership reviews. They will give you a clear idea about the bike, how good it is, what issue it is having (first batch dukes had faulty electricals, radiator fan problems etc etc). Check the ownership experiences threads regularly, talk to the new owners, ask them questions about the bike and then make an informed decision.

Also start saving up money so that you don't have to take a huge loan(paying interest is not at all fun).

Thanks Brother for such a good advise. And yeah I have been very active these days and reading almost all the forums in XBhp. And yeah paying interest is not all fun. [emoji12]

Guys!!

Should I consider dominar as an option among CBR 250 and R3?

And how do they tag this kind of price for 400cc and 38bhp bike?

How does the R3 stand that high when it comes to the price ?

I am confused. Help me out. I can understand that Yamaha's riding quality stands out when it is compared to Bajaj but how can I convince myself R3 is worth the money compared to dominar?

Hoping for a convincing replies to buy R3

Dominar is a good bike, on papers. Wait for sometime and let the reviews and ownership threads roll out. Also, KTM is value for money. With so much raw power delivery, it's a beast. The 2017 Duke 390 is gonna have a bigger tank i heard (13 litres). In the current model, I feel only the tank is their disadvantage. I'm on the same boat too.. I TD CBR and it was comfortable... But as Bajaj has classified D400 to be a "power cruiser" and segmented it in the "sports tourer" category, I'm gonna wait a bit and if it's good enough, I might go for it.
Now, as you said Yamaha has wonderful riding quality and the products longlast more than a few other manufacturers. I had ridden the R3 and it was a great bike. The engine is smooth, brakes are good, good cornering abilities, but the pricing's a bit on the higher side.
To put in simple terms, you could buy a bajaj d400 for 1.6L and use it well for 3-4 years and sell it ( bajaj has poor resale value after 3 years) and go for another bike of the same cost (or) you can go for yamaha r3 with 3.65L which would serve you well for about 5-6 years. But it's still your wish to keep it or sell it.
It's your choice.

PS: I believe in "Get a feeling and attachment towards your bike. You love your bike, it'll love you back." And from your posts, I personally feel you have a soft corner for R3, so I think you should go for R3.

Unforgiv3n biker yamaha is always my all time love. Like u say I will wait for sometime.

Though CBR 250 is a good tourer, I still have my eyes on R15 where dominar could be bought under my budget.

Anyways let me wait and see. Thanks for your reply.

Wait for some time before Yamaha launches their 250cc. Might look like an interesting prospect for you.
