• New Bike Advice - Considering pillion comfort

I am delighted to begin my first post in this forum. I have been scrolling through pages of this forum and found this is right place to ask for advise.

I am planning to upgrade my biking experience from my old TVS starDLX-100cc to some performance bikes less than 200cc. I usually ride bike for fun and hardly go for journey of 100km with pillion(mother sometimes). I go for jobs offshore and leave the bike idle for 2 to 3 months- so i consider kicker to be available for easy going.

My requirements are:
1. Performance bike good enough for commuting with Rear seat comfort consider for women pillion (sidesaddle seating posture).
2. Bike with Kick starter- As I leave my bike long time idle, so i need manual option.

a) I found Honda CB Hornet 160 to be suitable for my choice. It got good saree-guard stock fitted as well. I am not sure how easy for pillion rider to jump-in.

b) My second choice is Pulsar-180cc. But only self start option available with it. If comfort level is high for pillion, then I can go with it.

Looking for advice from xbhp'ians. Thanks in advance!!!

The Unicorn is probably more comfortable than the Hornet

Thanks for your advise. Do you mean the Unicorn 160?

Model looks cool and seems meet my requirement more specific.

I read the specs of 160cc saying ground clearance is 150mm, Whereas 150cc model gives 179mm. Is that good enough for our road condition?

Any Unicorn users advice is also welcome.
Cheers!!

Hornet. considering marginally higher Fuel economy. slightly wider tyres and better pillion comfort. plus the smoother honda engine and kick start option.

Thanks for your information.
How good is to drive hornet during rainy seasons.
Does the rear wheel without hugger protect us from mud/water splash? Is it gud enough to ride with pillion on rainy days?

Splash protection seems to be there for the bike. splash protection for the traffic behind the vehicle, not so sure about. Hornet owners can shed more light on this aspect.

How good is to drive hornet during rainy seasons?

Somewhere at Quora I read that the bike performs badly and engine loses its power on rainy weather. Strange to hear....

Does the rear wheel without hugger protect us from mud/water splash?
Should the rider need to do any tricks to successfully(without trashing pillion shirt and lower part of pant)ride with pillion on rainy days?

Thank you for your input...👍

Yes,
I also read the same but I have different experience.
Hornet is does holds in rainy and muddy roads. Good grip and without splashes.
Haven't experienced any power loss.

One final Question on Honda's bike discontinuation policy.
I loved the "Honda dazzler" in the past, but now the model is not there in their website. Also there is no evidence of "CB Trigger" , "CB Twister".
Do you guys think that the Honda provides spare parts support for those discontinues models for a long run, and how many years they do support once model discontinued?

The reason for my question is I suppose to keep the bike as long as it comes with me.
In such aspect do you guys think Hornet160 or Unicorn160, which is best choice?

Thanks everyone

Looking at the sales, Hornet will stay longer than Unicorn 160 unless Honda do something. Unicorn's sales nos. are very poor, thanks/blame Honda for bringing back Uni 150.

But Hornet is more pillion friendly? I doubt that, esp. for side seater...

In rains splash will create a problem for pillion in Hornet, for sure.(you can eliminate it by installing mud guard huggers like fz). As far as performance is considered bike is treat to drive especially in highway. You can cruise 85-90kmph with ease.(actually more than that).
As far as pillion comfort is considered pillion seat height is more than unicorn 160.So pillion comfort of unicorn is more.

Both unicorn160 and hornet has same engine but hornet tuned to extract 1bhp more than unicorn 160.Mileage will be nearly same for both the bike.

If you are looking for pillion comfort unicorn 160 or also unicorn 150 is wiser choise. I'm not saying that hornet has bad pillion comfort but pillion seat height is at higher side.
Also if mileage is not a problem for you take a look at Apache 200.

P.S-. User of Hornet since 7 months,no major problem till time.
Odo reading -5100
Average mileage-47-53

Mate, I've driven my friend's Hornet during the rains and it didn't pose any problem. I own a 2008 Unicorn with 50k on the ODO. I've ridden it extensively during rains and it never let me down. So both bikes won't let you down in the rainy season. I personally feel the Hornet's tank to be somewhat upright near my groin area(got the same feedback from many) so I hope you had a test ride of Hornet before considering it. The Unicorn is comfortable, easily drivable, and very forgiving with its gearing too. Also another good choice is the Gixxer SF/ SF FI. Given the choices: Hornet, Unicorn 150/160, and the Gixxer SF, I would choose Gixxer SF for its performance, handling, and looks. Also there are many positive feedback about Suzuki's service and I've given up hopes on Honda's service way back due to lot of bitter experiences.

Cheers!

I am a CB Unicorn 150 (2012 model) user. I have travelled with pillion many times inside the city.No complains at all.

As for pillion comfort, few bikes are praised for pillion comfort such as Karizma old version, Honda Unicorn 150 & Suzuki GS 150R. Among them the only available bike as of production is Honda Unicorn only.

Honda will never stop Unicorn 150 & Shine 125, since they are bread winners. Unicorn, Dazzler, Hornet all has shared internals. So spares won't be a big issue at all. CB unicorn is best for you. if it is city ride, this would be more than enough, with a awesome fuel efficiency (52 km/l) & bullet proof reliabilty...

Note:
You can always service a Honda Unicorn 150 with your reliable local mechanic, if at all you are not satisfied with honda service center (which would happen sooner / later)
If you are a DIY guy, You can do most of the things by yourself following the instructions from this book. (link gven below)
ABC of servicing and maintaining your Honda Unicorn

Proud CB Unicorn owner here.!
Unicorn is very good for pillion comfort. I've had the vehicle for 6 yrs. And there was no problem for the first five years. The last year was a bit rough. Pillion comfort is excellent. Ppl sleep like a baby on my back (just kidding, it's just so comfy). I've been on many roadtrips with my friends and ppl would be arguing to be a pillion on my Unicorn. Fuel economy is awesome. I even got 40-45kmpl during the last year. The rider's seat is extremely comfy and never gives you a backache even after 200-250 kms at a stretch.!
I've been a pillion on the old Karizma for long and that one's good and cozy like a couch but I'm not sure of the new Karizma ZMR.
I would suggest you go for CB Unicorn.
And as for the spare parts thingy, Honda provides spare parts upto five-six years after the bike's discontinued. Anyways as fullmoon said, Honda will not stop Unicorn because it's a winner in the daily city commuters' likes. And even if they do, you'll get spare parts forever coz it shares most parts with the subsequent bikes.
Anyways, you can do one thing. Take a test drive and ask for the showroom guy to drive and check the pillion comfort for yourself if need be.!
Cheers,
SV

For pillion comfort, Uni 160 is a better choice.

P.S. if you want some other options, SZ-RR is a good commuter with very good pillion comfort.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.
