  • A good bike within 2 lakhs.

Hi fellow xBhpians, I need some suggestions as to what bike should I get if my budget is 2 lakhs (10-20K more is ok). I am planning to gift a bike to my younger brother who currently owns an R15 v2 (2012 model which was previously owned by me ). He is 21 years old, around 5' 7" and weighs approximately 60 kgs. I am planning to gift a bike since he goes on long trips/tours of about 800-1000 kms on way. The seating posture of R15 is not too comfortable for it. I really can't stretch beyond by budget. He will be using the bike for daily commute to college as well. I know I cannot gift him a bike which can be called an update but still a new bike can be more comfortable and at least a bit more powerful than existing.

Since this is gonna be a surprise for him I couldn't directly ask him. Bajaj bikes would be a straight NO (no offense but I know he doesn't really like bajaj).

    Bikes that I shortlisted:
    1. Benelli TNT 25 (since it is benelli, i can assure a decent quality as compared to yamaha and a good riding position for long rides as well as daily commute)
    2. KTM Duke 390-2017 ( I know it is not out yet but if it is launched at same price like existing duke 390, I would go for it. This is highly impossible though)
    3. RE Himalayan (Not really which I considered coz of its tyre reviews on tarmac and city roads. It is great off-road but heard not that great on-roads )
    4. Any other??

    Thanks in advance.

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Re: A good bike within 2 lakhs.

Long distance tourer would be boring but easy on a CBR 250. Last week I made a 760 kms trip on my CBR 250 and it gave me 30 kmpl at 100-140 kmph on four lane highway. The engine was just purring throughout.

Bennelli is a premium bike with even more premium service costs. Check out the Bennelli TNT 25 thread for more details. They got problems too. Seems to me there's no use paying extra for similar quality.

The Duke/RC 390 are more exciting than the CBR but are beyond your budget.

Mojo is also another good tourer, although they lack widespread service centres. I heard the exhaust pipes interfere with cornering on the Mojo, which is just cruel.
Half the fun on the ghats is gone on this bike.

The CBR 250 is going to be pushed further to the back now that we have the Dominar, but since your brother doesn't like Bajaj, I guess the CBR 250 can be a good replacement for the R15, especially keeping long tours in mind. Your brother will love the 6000kms or 6 months oil change interval, 12k kms oil filter change interval, the 300-400 km tank range, the 18k kms air filter interval, 48k kms Spark plug replacement interval.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will consider this too. I don't know how did I miss this one. Probably I was just looking in naked and tourer section. Thanks once again leech

CBR 250 is good option , you can also look for D400, with ABS available and your brother being still young, safety aids are important. Since touring is your choice. D400 would be my best bet and it comes within your budget.

Since you want to gift him something, FZ25 is a good option. The remaining money would allow him to get some riding apparel too. In fact, get riding apparel before you buy the bike and see what budget you're left with.
Side note - keep 25-30 k aside for good riding gear.
            Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

Re: A good bike within 2 lakhs.

I just returned from a 5700km trip on my CBR250 with pillion. Bike performed flawlessly. No issue whats so ever. Its not my bike is new, it has completed 54K kms. You should definitely consider CBR250 in your list. But obviously the ABS version. There is no point in going for Non-ABS.

Considering the fact you brother wont like Dominar 400 (which is best bet currently), you can look into FZ25 as well as its priced aggressively. Please buy proper riding gear for your brother before gifting any powerful machine. It helps.

He already got those last year on his birthday. He is just burning holes in my pocket every birthday (benefits of being younger ). Rynox tornado pro, solace gloves and TCX x-action riding boots. I forgot what knee guards he is using since he bought those himself. Is FZ25 better than R15 in terms of power? I am not sure he will settle for FZ25 since he rides with me and hates when I fly next to him on ER6N .

To be frank, an R15 is more than what a college student would ever *require*.
FZ25 is a 250cc relaxed machine. It makes roughly 15-20% more power and loads of torque at lower revs than R15. So yes it would cruise effortlessly on the highway.

And if he won't settle for FZ25 just because you fly next to him on the Kawasaki, I urge you to stop flying by his side and let him get his bike by himself whenever he feels he can. There has to be a moral code on both sides - you don't 'demand' gifts. And if such demands are fulfilled, most don't respect them.

                  No offence!

*And get him riding pants. Knee guards are just like open face helmets. They don't help when actually needed.
