  • Choosing a budget tourer. Mahindra Mojo vs Bajaj Dominar vs others

    Hello,

It's been a while since i posted anything here.I'm facing some serious dilemma in choosing an upgrade from my beloved Bajaj Pulsar AS200.

I was pretty much decided on the mighty Dominar but things changed. So here goes the story how i got myself into this situation.

Ever since Dominar was announced with this Killer price tag and loaded with features i was pretty sure it was going to be my next ride. But out of nowhere Mahindra Mojo comes to mind, although it doesn't look that great (to me), i heard nothing but good things about it.
Then i took the test ride.. man i was blown away how smooth, refined and powerful that engine is, it's so comfortable.

Then when it comes to Dominar. I can get Dual channel ABS, Slipper Clutch and LED Headlamps for 45k less than what i have to pay for Mojo. It's even BS4 with AHO.
i haven't taken any test rides but i can already imagine how refined the engine would be, and i'm sure it will be nowhere near Mojo's or CBR's.

With a little over 2L as my budget i should be able to commute effortlessly 4-5 Kms daily and should be capable enough for occasional road trips.

I have been using Bajaj for about 5 Years now and Dominar is still a question mark on long term reliability. I can already see multiple owners complaining about oil leaks and such.

Is Mojo really worth over the 45K premium over the Dominar, even if it doesn't have much features to boast. Or is there any other alternatives better than these two?.

Mojo / Dominar owner are very welcome to share their experience here. Help me.

(I know Honda CBR 250R is pretty much the overall winner in this price range. I already own it. )

      Hi Jishnu,

Greetings from a Dominar ABS owner . Though i havent ridden the Mojo, like you I have only read praises of it. It seems like a legit mile muncher. i think recently a couple of guys did a world record breaking ride from the eastern most point of the country to the western most point. Both of them were riding Mojos. Following is the news link:

Mahindra Mojo Enters India Book Of Records With Fastest East To West Ride - NDTV CarAndBike

I think thats a pretty strong testament of how abuse friendly and comfortable the Mojo really is. The only thing it misses out as per me is the ABS and a well spread out service network. I havent seen a single Mojo in my city since the day it was launched and have already seen a couple of Dominars since its launch in my city.

Coming to the Dominar, I have spent a week with it and the following are some of the negatives i face:

      1. Engine is a bit rough above 4500 RPMs. Bit annoying perhaps things will be better after run in.
      2. The bike does make its weight felt. Good or bad thats upto the rider to decide.
      3. The digital fuel gauge seems highly inaccurate.
      4. Puny 12 litre tank for such a heavy and relatively powerful bike.

I wont harp on the benefits since you can read them or see them in any of the innumerable reviews online. Take a test ride and see what you as a rider make of it. Sure its a VFM product but if your heart is set on the Mojo, go for it.

Re: Choosing a budget tourer. Mahindra Mojo vs Bajaj Dominar vs others

        Hello everyone,
This is my first post over xbhp!
        Seriously, yes!

According to my research, biggest problem with Mahindra Mojo is less efficient the braking system. Most of the people who had a TR are not satisfied with the brakes. Also maneuverability in city traffic is not that joyful with Mojo.
On the other hand, people are getting good performance from D400, which can be considered as a strong competitor.

I would also like to throw some light on a potential market changer launched by Yamaha, FZ25. which fall into the same segment and a promising brand. Waiting for customer reviews on this beast. Because practically one can't purchase a bike just for touring and also have to consider mundane conditions. So, though on paper D400 is looking the best, most of it's abilities will hardly be tried out. Whereas, FZ25 looks like a practical deal.

        Corrections wholeheartedly welcomed!

Riding is not just a skill, it's an attitude

What about Himalayan considering that they are coming up with BS4 compliant, ABS (Hopefully by April, that's what the talks are about) ?
But yes, the engine isn't refined. If that's what you are looking for then, my bad.

          Peace!

Haha. All my fingers are crossed that it comes out niggle free (if it is coming out in 1st place!).
Yes, there are issues in Himalayan (it's RE after all!), but it's good to know that RE is doing something about it proactively. Well, whatever it the issues are, it is one hell of a bike!

Re: Choosing a budget tourer. Mahindra Mojo vs Bajaj Dominar vs others

                A Mojo owner here.

It has been 1.5 months since I have bought this bike and done only 550 KMs yet. Both on highways and in the city.

                Pros:
The bike is powerful and has the punch in it. It has a good grip on the highways and is easier to overtake. If you are new to it, it would take some time to get used to. Below 2500 rpm there are vibes but above that, it's mostly smooth. With additional fog lamps which are provided by Mahindra, you can get the required visibility for night rides. For one year, you also get free Road Side Assistance. The sound is sweet but with helmets on, it's other people who would get to hear it more.

                Cons:
The engine is good but 1st and 2nd gears are clunky in city rides. I rode Bajaj Avenger Street 220 and found its gears are way smoother than Mojo's. Braking could have been better but newer models have the updated master cylinder which improves the performance. The bike heats up like anything in city rides (maybe not up to the level of Dukes) but on the highway it's calm.

Overall, Mojo is out and out tourer. There is something about this bike which will make you fall in love with it even with her weird looks. There are people who have completed 13000 KMs in our Mojo WhatsApp group with just the regular service. Reliability is a major plus point for Mojo though I am yet to experience it personally.

Your requirement being a BUDGET tourer and with the given options, D400 is a better buy , a complete VFM package. It does good job inside city as well. so, you get to hit city and highway

Can you live with a 12 litre fuel tank?
                    Yes? ----------> Get a Dominar
                    No? -----------> Get a Mojo

Mojo is not 45k over the dominar, probably more like 30k (standard edition). That 30k is due to a better engine and parts. However, each has its own set of advantages, but that has to match with the user preferences

                      Dominar advantages
                      1. Better handling in traffic. Can squeeze between vehicles smoothly
                      2. Better pickup and faster than Mojo; although I'm not sure if you can use its full power within the city traffic.
                      3. Better fuel economy maybe?
                      4. Value for money with ABS and stuff. Although I've read CBR 250 has better braking

                      Mojo advantages
                      1. Better posture. Spine straight
                      2. Better shock absorbers compared to Dominar. Works well in bad city/village kind of roads, potholes etc.
                      3. Better engine
                      4. I think overall a stronger build quality

If your commute is primarily 4-5 km/day then I suppose Dominar will work out pretty well. For guys who do around a 250-300 km/week commute to office on indian roads, I think Mojo is a better bet, but also depends on their spine health.
