I am looking to buy a new bike and am thoroughly confused between the following 3 bikes:
1. RE TB 500
2. RE TB 350
3. Bajaj Dominar 400
Here are a few details as requested in the sticky:
1. Age: 33
2. Height: 5'8
3. Weight: 100Kg
4. Intended usage: Highway runs, Weekend recreation riding
5. Fuel Efficiency requirement: Doesn't matters
6. City & Highway percentage usage: City - 25%, Highway - 75%
7. Approximate Daily / Monthly running: The bike will be driven mostly on weekends for long trips
8. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing): Bangalore
In other words, I will be mainly using the bike for weekend tours along with my wife. For most city usage, we have a scooter.
I just love the TB 500 - it's height, seating position, handle bars, back rest for the pillion, overall looks and the engine with such amazing power and thump the most.
However, I have read a lot of negatives about its EFI system (along with the various dozen other problems that all RE's suffer with). I don't care about the regular problems, they can be dealt with without much fuss, but since I will need to take the bike to the company store if any EFI problem crops up, I am a bit hesitant about it.
And therein lies my confusion whether I should just stick to TB 350 with carb engine. Honestly, TB 350 is just unable to satisfy my thirst for power and thus was almost completely out of the equation except that there is no option of TB 500 with carb engine.
At this point, I would like to mention that from the RE family, I would prefer only the TB, none other.
And as if the above were not enough, RE decided to skip the ABS on the 2017 models in India. The lack of ABS and alloy wheels, and EFI problems with the RE TB 500 has pushed me to look for other options.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seems to be any other bike in this segment and thus I had a look at the Bajaj Dominar 400.
The Dominar scored very well on most points except that it's not a cruiser and well, it's missing the RE thump. Bajaj really put in almost everything in the bike for that price range. Right now, it does looks very sexy but with competition so tough, there is always a new sexy right around the corner.
There is also the option to buy the TB 500 and then convert it to carb engine. Well, neither do I want to do such major modifications nor would I break the warranty by doing so.
So here are a few questions that could probably decide whether or not I should go for TB 500:
1. Any idea about the number of EFI complaints? What type of complaints? How to avoid common problems with EFI?
2. RE will have to start producing it's bikes with ABS from next year onwards, will I be able to retrofit the ABS to my bike from the RE service centre itself?
3. I really fear flat tyres, and on an RE, that would be massive. I intend to switch to alloy wheels with tubeless tyres. Would that impact the bike in any way and whether it's a good idea?
4. Are the RE service centres in Bangalore really that bad as I have read in a lot of reviews?
5. What are the things I should look for while taking the delivery of the bike?
I hope I have addressed most of the points that you guys might need to form an opinion.
Kindly help me out in making the decision.
Thank you all in advance,
Sourin K Sen
