    Need advise to upgrade from duke 200!

    Hi all,

    I have been riding duke 200 in NCR since 5 years and planning to upgrade my bike very soon. Max budget is 6 lacs. After surveying the available options, I have narrowed down my search to two options - KTM Duke 390 2017 or Kawasaki Z650 2017(I prefer naked styles). I'll riding it in city only. I will hardly take it out on highways(once in a month type). KTM has an established chain of service centres while Kawasaki has only 1 service centre left in delhi. My monthly riding will be around 700-800kms. The only part I hate about my duke is it parts quality. The Duke 200 2012 model's spare parts were not upto the mark. Though I know Duke 390 2017 seems to have better build quality. I'm inclined more towards Kawasaki because of it's parts quality and reliability. So, need advise in deciding among the two choices.

      Make sure u can handle the higher parts and service cost of the Ninja. If that is not a problem, then Ninja is an awesome bike for sure (But u sure can't rule out the new KTM Duke 390 though). Heard that KTM has really silenced the vibes, etc in this one.
      Also, just a couple of days back I did a tire change, chain lube, rear brake pad change, engine oil change in my KTM Duke 390. Of course, the engine oil & tire was from my side. U know how much the total cost was. Just Rs.359/-! I myself was surprised at this..[emoji7][emoji7]

      Update: Oops, sorry. It seems ur intending to buy the new Z650. That is one awesome bike. Styling derived straight from the ZX-10r. A vfm proposition as well. I think it's a sedate machine as well since it is mainly a touring-class bike. 600cc supersports and above are said to be not suitable for Indian roads. So, choose what ur heart says. Atb..👍👍

        Thanks jack! My expenses on Duke 200 2012 model have been upto 20k per year(inc service costs). Primarily because of the less durable parts like radiator fan, shocker seals, indicators, etc. Even my throttle body has issues now(I have hardly completed 23k kms). So, I am okay to spend 20k per year for maintenance :/. My Duke parts malfunction too often and we have localized KTM service centres. I wish if Kawasaki bikes do not malfunction every now and then. Visiting 2-3 times a year to Delhi showroom will not be an issue to me. I visit KTM service at least 4-6 times in a year.

          If money is not the problem, then Kawasaki is your answer. If the SVC isn't too far from your place, that's another bonus.

            this seems to be an easy decision. If you can handle the cost of owning a sbk then go ahead with the z650 and if not then go for d390 which is a far better bike in every way than the previous model. As you said above thay you will use it mostly inside the city then i suggest the duke390 makes a better case for itself as it is lightweight and has tractable performance which you will be able to fully utilise within the city limits.

              Hmmm. I hv a Dec 2015 model KTM Duke 390. & I hv done close to 11k kms on it. It has given me ZERO problems till date. The thing which ur talking abt is regarding the initial batches- 2011/12 it seems. Nowadays, Dukes are glitch-free..👍👍

                okayyyyyyyy.
                I think I should go for the VFM duke 390 2017 first. And then after mastering it for few more years, I will be able to decide if I need a more CC bike or not.

                Also, I'm not sure about the kawasaki service after their alliance end. May be in some years they will be fully able to setup their service centers. I also had an eye to benelli tnt 600i which is the best sounding one but needs some technical improvements. May be in coming years, they will launch the revised version. Till then I can enjoy on duke 390 very well.

                  Too bad you don't have the cb650 f or the gsx750 to consider or my personal favorite the fz07...

                      Hey mate!! Well you have a large gap between duke and z650.. nothing in comparison.. But if you are going to use it for daily city commute then i would suggest duke.. Z650 is a bit too much to ask for in normal city traffic.. And secondly the ground clearamce is only 130 mm so you need to be really careful at potholes n bumpers because the bike is having underbelly exhaust. Keep these things in mind rest its all good..
