  • Suggestion for a bike to a rider with back-pain.

    Dear All,

    Greetings of the day.
Thanks to the moderators for having permitted me to join the genuine biking form.
I would quickly jump to my query for the requirement of a bike for myself. Details are furnished below:

    1. Height: 5'6" (approx)
    2. Age: 32 years.
    3: Built: Slim.
4: Weekly Commute: 115 kilometers approx city traffic. (Weekend tours occasional are additional around say 250 kilometers approx for a day)
5: Budget: At the most Rs. 90,000/- for an ex-showroom price in Kolkata.
6: Things to look out for:
    • Relaxed ride,
    • A decent mileage (40 above in city),
    • Not a Rev happy person, rather I would prefer a relaxed ride to my destination.
    • Most important, I have a back pain. (Diagnosed that my lower spinal bones, namely L6-L7 has lesser gaps between them, so it tends to

pain around my waist if being prolonged in a sitting or standing position).
    • I would prefer a relaxed stance rather than a sporty seating position.

7: I had been riding a passion pro frequently if not regularly.
8: Have gone though reviews and friend suggestions of Suzuki Gixxer SF, Bajaj Avenger Street series, Yamaha Fazer Fi, but not sure.

If you could please help me, it would be really kind. Looking forward to all your experienced and valuable suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Kunal

      Hey mate..

No one can suggest you anything so perfectly about it. The best is go for long test drives and let your back choose your bike..

      All the best

Congratulations are in order, Welcome to the forum!

Any particular reason for excluding Unicorn from the list? If no, I highly recommend adding that bike to your list. I'm a happy owner for the past 9 years and I can vouch for its reliability. I think it's the most comfortable 150CC bike, if I may. Not only the riders seat but also the pillion seat is mighty comfortable. Only thing that can be argued against the bike is its weight. If you can deal with that then, I think, the bike checks all your requirements.

If you're more into contemporary styling, then I think Gixxer SF makes more sense, barring its higher pillion seat.

        Cheers!

I will be obviously taking test rides. Just wanted to have the experiences, if any, to narrow down accuracies in choosing among the more suiting options.

Thanks for your suggestion and reply.

Thank you so much for your hearty welcome!!
Unicorn is a fine bike and I guess the 160 is of a lighter weight around 136 kgs which is similar to that of Suzuki Gixxer SF. But the lack of Rear Disc raises doubts in me as to if it would be really safe to take it on tours on Indian Highways. Although Honda claims of CBS, but I am not sure as to how much it would be effective. Rest things are fine with the bike as long as it doesn't gets me a waist pain after riding for sometime.

            Thanks,
            Kunal

I would suggest u take a test ride of rtr200 since its more vfm listed over 150cc bikes & offers best suspension & handling set-up in its segment.

Get a test ride on Fazer 150 (Good for long tours with dual headlight and semi fairing), Gixxer 150 and RTR 180.

RTR 200 is also a good bike but considering your mileage needs it falls just below 40 for rev friendly person.

Also try Unicorn 150 it may be a old one but still it can suffice your needs.

                Thanks. Ride Safe!!

seeing your requirements, Only bike comes into my mind is Unicorn 150. I still feel its the best suspension among 150 cc bikes in india. Though I like the Gixxer's suspension aswell. Test ride and decide.

Re: Suggestion for a bike to a rider with back-pain.

                    Hi
I suffer from a slip disk. I was riding a Royal Enfield classic in the month of October 2016 in Himachal and on a very bad stretch of road. Same evening I felt pain in my back and it went on increasing day by day though I stopped riding from that very evening. I am riding impulse from 2012 in Mumbai. Before that I rode many bikes and on long rides I always had a tired back. But once I started riding impulse, trust me, not even a single time I ever had a back pain issue. I resumed riding impulse after resting for good three months after slip disk and never felt back pain even once while on bike. Though felt pain many times sitting cross legged on sofa, doing yoga stretches, standing for long durations, like at ticket window etc but never on my impulse. It has the best suspension set-up. After slip disk I thought I won't be able to ride anymore but thanks to impulse. I am worried which bike to choose after impulse with this herniated disk...

Anyone riding a RE with all those vibrations will head for a backache and probably a headache as well, no offence to owners. My suggestion is to graduate to at least a twin cylinder setup if not four and you will have no vibrations, therefore reduced fatigue and problems like backache etc.

You can buy any bike and then customise the setup for your requirements. The easiest one will be setting up the handle bar height. I would definitely back up unicorn 160 with the rear disk. Other than that I believe bajaj avenger will be good for you. You may also consider Thunderbird but the weight might be an issue. If you choose any of the sport design bike with rear set footpegs they will have a forward set lean with short handlebar. This will lead to wrist and lower back pain unless you have a fit back. Consider cruiser set ups and take test rides. Someone also suggested impulse which has the longest suspension travel and tall handle bar will make it a great setup for anyone with problems like you face.
