  • Strange case of selecting a scooter.

Hi Guys, I really need your help and advice.

I am going back to school for postgraduate studies in July.

After a year in India, I might shift to foreign countries for research. So for one or two more years until I finish my research I will have to leave my two wheeler in my home in India. If I get to work there, the time period could be longer.

Now, the motorcycle that I have will be used by a relative to whom I'm happy to give right away since he is an undergraduate student and it's the right time for him to use my gixxer. Meanwhile, my new university commute everyday will be around 30 km round trip. I am planning to get a scooter for the same and also for city commutes with the following in mind -

    1. Good rideability and fuel efficiency for at least 13 - 14 months.
    2. Reliable build quality.
    3. Ease of storage when I'm not in India - this could be over a year to two or even more. My family members will not be touching the vehicle during the time I'm away. I do not wish to sell it too due to poor resale value and it will be just one year. If the bike can be stored longer then I'm happy to keep it.
    4. A workhorse for daily usage and practicality.
    5. Comfortable for a tall person - 6 ft. Pillion comfort is not an issue.

I have the following scooters shortlisted and with quotations ready.

    1. Access 125 - 70k on road with disc brake. Fibre body.
    2. Vespa - 85k on road. Metal body.
    3. Hero Duet - 64k on road. Metal body.
    4. Yamaha alpha - 64k on road with disc brake. Fibre body.

For the usage I mentioned and for the ease of storage + eventual restoration after years, which scooter will be suitable? Which is the scooter that my family can simply dust and keep while I'm away? If selling the scooter after a year is advisable, which scooter will fetch good resale value? I am not keenly into selling it as I think a two wheeler is a must in every house, esp scooter these days, for emergency. So I just want ease of maintenance when I'm away or if someone wishes to ride it in my family, they must be able to get the scooter ready in short time with good support from service station.

Also, please mention the storage maintenance for scooters. Which brand offers best support for my requirements in Chennai?

    Thanks in advance,

    Srinath.

P.S: I have also posted this on the storage maintenance thread in the general biking discussion section because it is relevant there too.

There is no sense storing a scooter for 2 years! Buy. Sell. Buy again!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

But Vespa is like one time investment for me. Isn't it good enough to store knowing I'll return? Its made to last I believe.

Hero duet and alpha, yeah, I can buy, sell and then buy something else!

I'm trying to convince my family to use two wheelers regularly but they give aging and traffic as reasons. I'll still try better.

        Thanks.

My mom owns a Vespa 125... Has been 4 years since the launch... It was one of the first bought in dehradun .. Even without tubeless tires... But trust me it rides very good... Very good handling... Very stable at high speeds... Very maneuverable as handlebar rotate more than any other scooter... Though storage is less than competition... Also the footwell has a hump(not plain like Activa or access)... Not usable for caring cylinder... Doesn't have feature like usb charging port... Maintenance is on a higher side..
My cousin owns a access .. it's 3 years old.... But it has deteriorated more worse... But maintenance cost is less. .. Also has more storage...
If you want a more power and stability and good ride quality but Vespa.... If you want cheaper option buy access as it can be sold easily also service cost is less ...
But i think Vespa will hold more value

If resale value is a big concern, forget Access and Alfa. U will get good resale from Activa>Jupiter> Maestro.

go for activa if it is to be left unused
my activa was left for 1.5 years

and you wont believe it just started in 15 approx kicks

i got it serviced and then everything is fine

For your use, Activa will make the most sense. It has excellent build quality, engine never gives up and will start no-matter how long you keep it away and it commands the highest resale value among all scoots too. You can buy one when you are in India, sell off at excellent resale price and get a new one once you are back. Or you can store it away and start it once you are back in India and I can bet it will start again in just few tries.
