  • FZ16 vs Gixxer SF vs Avenger 220 - Help me decide!

Hey guys, new to the forum

As the title says, I'm having a hard time deciding between these 3.

To me, FZ makes the most logical sense as I have owned it before and I was very happy with it. To me, it's the "safe choice" as I also don't hear too many issues about it and plenty of mechanics around to fix any problem relating to it as it is very popular here. But I'm keen on trying something different and want to give a cruiser bike a chance. I can't effort RE and I have heard numerous maintenance issues, so I don't want to go for Enfield.

So my heart is kinda set on Avenger 220 Street. It looks very classy and feels very different to anything I've used before. But I hear that it too has oil leakage, gear shifting and pillion rider discomfort. Posts in the ownership thread also seem to confirm the same.

Gixxer seems like a fantastic vehicle, but it seems little flashy and even though I love how it looks, SO and family strongly disagree

I have test driven all 3 and I like all of them. Each one offers something different.

    Budget: 1 lakh +/- 10k
    Height: 5'8''
    Build: Average
    Use: City/Highway (80/20)
    City: Chennai
Previous bikes: Honda Twister, Yamaha FZ (v1)

Priorities: Ride comfort, low maintenance, pillion rider comfort, safety.

Can spend a little extra on mods if need be.

On road prices of these bikes, in case any of you are curious, in Chennai as of June 2017:

    FZ 96k
    FZ-S 97k
    FZ-S (Military) 98k
    Gixxer 96k
    Gixxer SF 106k
    Avenger 150 Street 92k
    Avenger 220 Street 101k
    Avenger 220 Cruise 101k

It doesn't make sense to go from a FZ to another FZ in my opinion. And Gixxer is more or less very similar to FZ in terms of handling, has a bit more power and slightly better in the fuel efficiency department.

One of my friends bought the Avenger street and he complains about it skidding whenever he applied the front brake, fell down twice Since you're transitioning from a FZ, you might want to keep this in mind since the riding position, handling etc of both bikes are very different. You won't be able to flick through traffic like you could in your FZ.

BUT despite all the pros and cons, we still end up buying what our heart desires otherwise end up regretting and wondering what if... so if you like the Avenger Street, and your heart yearns for it, go for it.

By logical sense, I meant that it was a tried and trusted vehicle for me, the old FZ v1. Also while I used it for couple of years, it wasn't technically mine, was a relatives who had left it at my place. But I understand your point.

Tbh the only reason I considered Gixxer SF was because it really looks like a premium sports bike straight out of MotoGP!

Yes, read of this in the xBHP Avenger ownership thread. Wondering if there is a way to improve the braking system. But I will miss the snug sneaky ways of FZ in a tight roads

Haha, funny you should mention this, because I was about to go to showroom to book Avenger 220 Street but I had cold feet and decided to come here and make this forum post

Welcome to the forum mate! I hope this thread helps you in your buying process.

As suggested above, even I would say buying FZ16 doesn't make much sense. I think the braking problem in Avenger is unanimous, at least the owners who I know confirm this.

Two more bikes that I can think of, within you budget and are an upgrade, are the NS200 and the RTR200. Any reason for not including them in your list? I would pick the RTR200 between these two.

          Cheers!

Hey, sorry for getting back to you so late!

Regarding RTR 200, having experienced it first-hand, I felt that the pillion rider had a tough time. The seat was small and uncomfortable. Maybe it could be fixed with some seat mods.

Pulsar 200NS seemed a little over my budget, with on-road coming roughly over 1.10.

Also, this may sound very superficial, but I'm not a fan of their aesthetics :|

Regarding the braking issue, have any of them found any solutions apart from just applying the front brake more? I'm just wondering if that it's a serious safety issue, then I definitely shouldn't be getting it...

            Thanks for your input!

Well, if the seats are hard, then padding/seat cover can be added to make the seats softer but since you found the seats to be small, I'm not sure about modding it to make it more usable.

On the braking front, I've heard panic braking is always an issue with Avenger. So I suggest you enquire from many owners/bhpians before finalizing on Avenger.

Also how about the Pulsar 220?

              Cheers!

Re: FZ16 vs Gixxer SF vs Avenger 220 - Help me decide!

I own avenger 220 cruise , only once i had faced skidding problem , that too when i had bought bike from showroom after registeration as showroom guys filled tyre pressure 35 front and 40 psi back and had rear brake too tight, corrected the pressure to 21 psi front and 25 psi back as per manual and loosened rear brake since then never faced any problem of skidding , for panic braking i press front brake 40 to 45 % and rear brake 50 % or , i drive mostly 40kmph to 50 kmph in city, and 70 kmph plus highways.
the brakes might not best like others , but it is still good for me.keep tyre pressure according to manual , you wont face braking problems.

About pillion comfort both my mom and dad found it comfortable .As i own cruise model as my height is 6.1 ft never faced any back or wrist or shoulder problem , cruise handle bars are comfortable for me , found street too low.

have done 3500 kms till now ,no problem apart from moody gear shift .(mostly due to oil of bajaj).
