  • Help choosing bike

I had Pulsar150 from 2005-2009. Than i left the bike league and jumped into cars. I bought Chevy beat LT petrol(Cng) in 2009 which i still drive and it has clocked 1lakh 50,000 Kms and still goes on without any major problems. Now i have decided to return back to the bike league and will still keep my car though. I am planning to buy a bike this Sep/Oct and i can extend waiting period till Nov. I am new here and i joined Xbhp to get help choosing a bike because i have not got into bikes too much from past 7 years and don't know the current scenario in India. These are my requirements, none of which can be compromised on!

    1. Maximum budget of 2.5L
    2. At least 30Km/L mileage
    3. Fully faired ,i don't like naked bikes
    4. At least over 300cc

I have done some research from few months and only bike that fits is the Ktm RC 390. Was waiting for Benelli Tornado 302R ,but i just had a conversation with Dsk Benelli Surat and they say its expected price is over 4L! Thats insane! Looks like now my only bet is the Tvs Akula or RC 390.
Any suggestions on bikes, their maintenance cost, performance etc will be appreciated.
I live in Gujarat, Valsad and the bike will be used to travel from Surat to valsad(110kms) weekly and occasionally(once a year) for long rides to tourist spots like Spiti valley or Ladakh.
Thanks in advance for help guys!

      Welcome to the forum mate!

I highly doubt whether the RC390 will deliver a mileage figure up and above 30 in city conditions. AFAIK, only the below bikes will check all your requirements.

      1. CBR250R
      2. R15 V2/S
      3. RC 200
      4. Pulsar RS200(Debatable on its fairing part)

If seating a pillion isn't an issue, I would recommend the RC200.

      Cheers!

Thanks for your honest suggestion! I will be driving mostly on highways and long rides only. My friend's Dominar returns 30-35km mileage on hignways but i dont like its design, had it been a faired bike ,i would have already bought it without second thought! Cbr250R is coming to India? I read that it isn't. Is Bajaj not coming up with faired version of Dominar? Something like RS400? I need a bit powerful as well as a bit economical solution. I know its tough, but i can wait.I have seen R15 and RC200, somehow i feel they are not powerful enough or a worthy upgrade from my earlier 150cc ride.

Yeah Dominar will return a healthy mileage for its power figures. I think you've misunderstood the CBR250R for the CBR250RR. CBR250R is in the Indian market for the past 5-6 years. It's a gem of a bike with ABS as an option. Only downside is there's no clear roadmap whether Honda will continue selling it or will stop it.

Believe me I was exactly in your shoes some 8 months back. I waited for close to 7 months for release of a faired bike with the exact criteria that you've mentioned. Finally bought the FZ25(long battle between head and heart). Though I advice against 'waiting for a bike' part, here I differ and suggest that you wait for the Fazer250. Lot many spy shots are out so I think the release should be during the festive season.

Now why I suggest you to wait is for these reasons: A 250CC engine(same as in my FZ25) that can easily pull at any gear(you'll feel like an upgrade), a semi-faired one, economy somewhere around 37Kmpl(that's what I get in City), Yamaha's reliability, and price that's probably lower than that of its competition.

          Cheers!

Oh! Sorry my bad. I had thought that it was just called CB250 and didn't have an R here in India. The problem with Cbr is the not so pleasing design, looks outdated. I think its now on hold as BS4 version might launch soon and if it came with a refreshed design it will be great option.
One thing that i don't understand is why all bikes are gettings delayed in India? When i was in college( around 5-6 years back) at that time i heard of Mojo, which launched now!!

I did check out the spy shots of Fazer250 as ypu mentioned and its looking promising. Lets wait for it and see if it comes out at a right price tag worthy of its features or not.
            Thanks for all the suggestion!
Btw, you didn't say anything about the Tvs Akula?

I highly doubt the refresh of CBR's design. Only changes that we seem to get are those sticker jobs. Yeah bike launches do take their sweet time here and every manufacturer has its own reason.

From the rumours and spy shots, the proposition of Akula seems somewhat in the lines of RC390. So I don't think that will tick your FE requirement. Also TVS has not launched their FI version of RTR200 which they've promised close to 1.5 years back. Even Pirellis as an option for RTR aren't available as widely as it should be. So I'm very skeptical of TVS launching Akula/RTR300 anytime soon.

My opinion is this; For the budget you have, you've to either compromise on the FE or you can reduce the budget to 1.5 lakhs. In most cases, budget and FE are inversely proportional
Should you compromise your FE requirements, you can open up many options such as the RC390, and even a used Ninja or R3 perhaps.

                Cheers!

Thanks for the link. Don't know why this thread does not come up when you search for Akula in google. I am waiting for longer if its worth the wait

If CBR's design will not be refreshed than its not going to sell as expected for sure. They need to update it aesthetically, even though its otherwise a great bike.
RC390 and Dominar uses same engine but has difference of about 10 in FE due to the difference in power. Akula's FE can be expected to be same about what Tnt 300 gives, i think.
Its true that FE and cost are inversely proportional but still i think it should not cost me more than my car's fuel cost😂
I cannot give up on FE, but can stretch my budget a bit.
