  • Looking for a short term bike (1 year). Had an R15 v2 and looking for a bike like it.

    Hi!

I'm a short rider (5'7) and am looking for a fully faired bike like the R15. I previously owned an R15 for a year (2013-2014) and clocked about 3k on the ODO before selling it. I loved it's cornering ability and the riding stance wasn't an issue for me. I will be owning bike for a year before selling it. My budget will depend on the resale value of the bikes. I do not feel like buying the R15 again because it seems to cost 10k more than when I bought it 4 years ago and has had no upgrades at all. In short, it feels old and it doesn't seem like it has VFM right now. Am willing to consider it if there's enough demand in the second hand market and can get about 1L a year from now. Yamaha dealer told me V3 bookings will start in Jan with deliveries in March but that would mean I'd own the bike for half a year only. I'm looking at the KTM RC 200 & 390 and also the R3 and am open to other bikes as well. I expect to ride about 3k kilometers this time around as well. Please give me your recommendations.

    TL;DR:
    Short guy - 5'7
Need a fully faired bike (riding stance isn't an issue)
    Will sell after a year
Might ride for about 3k kilometers over the course of a year
Budget based on resale value (40-50k drop is okay if its over 2L)

    Questions:
How is the demand for the R3/RC200/RC390? What is it's resale value like for 3-5k ODO?
    Are my requirements too unrealistic?

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

A question for the TS, why you want a bike for only one year ? And kind of usage you want I would suggest you to go for used bike.

Just on my experience, you won't get much resale value on RC 200.

and why buying a bike just to use it for a year to ride 3K kms and selling it.

get a good second hand bike instead maybe you get a good bike with good VFM too.

Re: Looking for a short term bike (1 year). Had an R15 v2 and looking for a bike like it.

I'll be leaving abroad for higher studies next year. I do not want to get a bike outside India. I really really like the way the R15 V3 looks and I've already used an R15 V2 so I'd like to upgrade to a better bike if possible. I'm interested in getting the R3 and I've seen only 2 ads on OLX for used R3s that were selling for 3.35L. I read somewhere on xbhp that Yamaha was selling the non-BS4 compliant R3s at a steep discount (30-60k) so I thought I could get a first hand R3 directly instead. I was open to RC200 and RC390 but seeing the previous post about RC200 not having good resale value I'm a little hesitant now. If I get a used bike, how easy will it be to sell it and how much further can I expect the resale value to drop?

            @Eesh Likhith

Expecting to ride around 3000 kms in a 1 year period?

            That tells me 2 things

            1. The bike is barely getting out of the Breakin phase
            2. Point #1 automatically suggests you will not be putting track time on the bike.

My question to you: Why get a sport bike?

My suggestion to you: If you want to go for a new bike, look into FZ25 or RTR200 4V

If you want to go for a used bike, once again look for teh same.

Yes, I am suggesting you to go for a Naked bike because I am all about Function over form, thats my style. If you are not going to put track time on a bike designed for the track then theres no point getting it and that too just for a year without even barely completing its Break-in.

FYI: R15 V3 is not going to come to India. Not this year, nor the year after.

I love the look of the fully faired bikes. I also love the riding stance and handling of the R15 and I'm assuming the RC200/390 is just as good. I rode the FZ for a day and it felt like a very normal bike and it didn't feel confidence inspiring either. I'm not sure how to explain the feeling but the way it handled felt weird. I think I just don't like it when the handle is higher than the seat.

Why? I love the look of R3 and the v3 has inherited it's looks. Thought v3 would be like a little budget friendly R3 :|

You answered the question out of context. Aesthetics aside, if you are not going to put track time on the bike why get a sport bike?
Also since you already tried FZ16 and it dint seem to inspire confidence, try Gixxer SF

R15 V3 inherited the traits from the bigger brothers R6 and R1. And the looks of V3 has nothing to do with it Not launching in India

Lol. How many R15 owners did track days? It's not designed to drive only in track.

Bro, you have only few choices in sport bikes in a budget like cbr150, cbr250 and r3. You will probably not get good resale value for KTMs. I've seen too many KTMs for sale in roadside shops. Other than that, can anyone advise on ninja 300 resale value.

                        1. Dont multipost
                        2. All those who I know with an R15 go to the track (which consists of about 8 people). The rest, I dont care
                        3. You seem to have a poor understanding of how motorcycle classes work. I do my best to give recommendations and suggestions based on practicality not feelings/aesthetics (which are a part of secondary consideration)
                        4. Just because he has money to buy and sell a sportbike doesnt mean he should do so. Thats also the reason why hes asking for advice on this forum so that he doesnt blow away his money on something thats not right for his requirements.

Also did you read his original post properly? He clearly mentioned he will be clocking ~3500kms in a 1year period after which he will be going abroad. For this requirement you suggested him the CBR150R which is fine. But 250R, R3 and N300? Seriously?

                          1. I agree as I'm getting used to xbhp.
                          2. Just because he doesn't do track doesn't mean he should not buy any sport bike. R15 is bought mostly for road instead of track apart from your friends.
                          3. I understand quite well about motorcycle classes that is why I am trying to suggest only sport bike which he specifically wants instead of a naked bike. Most average Indian guy wants to buy a ninja. So, he might be able to sell it for a good price in a short period of time. CBRs and dukes are everywhere so it could be difficult for him to sell quickly. I bet the shelf life of a kawasaki is way better.
                          4. Even if he wants to do only 3k km, he is not going to scrap the bike after that. If you're more considerate about the bike, he is going to sell it to someone else who'll take care of it. For money, depreciation will affect lesser for a 2L+ bike because any bike will depreciate around 30,000 at the least which is a small percent of the original price for big bike. Also, after going abroad, there is not many chances that he can enjoy his bike there due to adverse climate. I have seen many students working part time to adapt to the new economy. So, there is a high chance that he cannot immediately buy a bike there. Buying a car would be a better decision. It is better to buy a good bike, enjoy it while he is still young and sell it to his friends or relatives if possible rather than rely on uncertain future.

Hope you don't get offended for presenting a different point of view than yours.

2> Like I mentioned, practicality is the key. Your suggestion for Form over Function against OP's requirement is conflict of interest.
3> If you understood motorcycle classes quite well you would know that a Sport bike is the least preferable choice for daily city usage even less if its going to be just for 3500kms and non-track use
4> All of that is just your assumption or maybe you know the OP very well. Is he your friend or something

And no buddy I am not offended, its just that you chose to Critic my opinion instead of providing any valuable input to the OP himself. Seems like you were more offended than me.

My style is more towards practicality as per given situations. Get a comfortable, less costly bike, enjoy it for a year and sell it off. It will be easy to sell it off as well.

Your style seems to be to spend as much money as possible even if it doesnt make any sense. KTMs have a bad resale value. As for R3/N300 you are not gonna get a buyer anytime soon. CBR150/250R, are those even available in Dealerships? The BSIV variants havent come out yet unless dealerships are selling off their BSIII stock as 2nd hand.

Take my example: I bought the GSX150-F even though its the same as the GSX150. A casual bike rider might argue that I bought the 150F just because it has a Fairing and it looks dope. I agree it does look dope with the fairing but the fairing was a Secondary reason for buying the faired variant. The Construct of the Gixxer SF has certain advantages over the naked variant which you wouldnt notice unless you were looking for it. What are those? Stay tuned for my Video on it!

                            Cheers!

Instead of focusing on what you want or what is best, please have a perspective on what OP wants. Read the original question where the OP states 'Need a fully faired bike (riding stance isn't an issue)'. It is you who prefers practicality over form and not OP. Or else the world will be full of naked bikes. Aerodynamics and added stability makes faired bikes better. Naked bikes may have few advantages but faired bikes have theirs too. I'm outta here.
