  • Time for an upgrade!

Hi , I am looking for a upgrade for my bike, (Currently riding a Honda Shine since past 9 years) and i am confused about options.

Let em start by giving my specifics here :
Budget : Around 1,20,000. (can stretch for Dominar....but thats where the confusion starts!)
    Riding style: Easy going
    Age: wrong side of 20's
Others: Need a calm and mature machine for long rides.
Aimed Primarily for city rides - Clocking on an average 100KMS per day on weekends and minimal(10 kms odd at max) on weekday but it should do some mild Touring -I have been on borrowed bikes to various places nearby viz Bangalore , Chattisgarh etc .I would like to tour extensively on the machine , at least one ride a month >500 KMS

    So here is the dilema,

I was straight up waiting for December to wrap up one of my loans and then go for Dominar with a fresh loan but my father's bike gave up and i have to get a new one now.
Current financials are , well, lets say like any IT guy's , a bit messed but otherwise comfortable for an EMI of like 5000-10000. I would love to wrap the loan up in a year as well. (that limits the bike prices in about 1,00,000 -1,20,000 range) (i can give 30-40K downpayment i presume)

That brings us to the predicament, with the budget set the only bikes that qualify now are (Under 120000 budget, engine capacity of 200-CC or greater and not a big fan of NS/AS.

    1) Bajaj Avenger 200 (Cruise/Street ) --
    Things i like:
1)This will come at 1,05,000 -1,10,000 .Leaving a bit of space for a cool lid.
2)The general dilemma is between cruise and street which i think i will eventually take the street.
    3) Saw these babies manage khardungla easily last year (I was on a classic and had to borrow fuel from a bunch of these guys who were riding from Bangalore)
4)The new colors and designs are really mature
5)Feel like god rides sound really promising!
6)Can accommodate most of the luggage with bags at back.

    Things that i am concerned
1)Its a Bajaj, Albeit service and engine horror stories ?
2)The engine, (i like if it aint messed up dont fix it but isnt this engine) ,isnt it like too old?
    3)No FI/ABS
4)Handling, is the front end that bad as the people say ?

    Misc:
Have anyone tried mounting that epic windshield on a street ?

    2) TVS Apache 200
    Things i like:
    1) Its an Apache
    2) Pirelli and FI comes up at 1,20,000 , hits the budget but looks worth it
    3) Looks a bit more young (i am afraid the avenger will make me look older than i am , i am 26.5 :P)
    4) New design, new Engine, new bike

Things that i am weary about
    1) New design, new Engine, new bike -New problems ?
    2) Service ...heard TVS ain't great about this
3)Availability : The TVS aint readily available

Bikes i didnt like/Negated : FZ25 (No Abs, overpriced ) , Himalayan (are we even getting these ? ) , Dominar (This is where my heart was set, but with an on road of 1,74,000 for the FI verison , doesnt look like its gonna happen , also 820MM height ?! ...i am just 5'3" , double footing would be a challenge and having ridden the crappy raods, i would love to have my feet planted when required)

    Query Approved

For your height, the Avengers will be comfortable to ride. The Apache is also decent for shorter riders.

The two bikes are very different and it depends entirely on personal preference. My choice would be the Apache 200.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

I would suggest the Apache 200 as well but with your height concerns I think it would be a bit of stretch. Currently there is only the carburetted version available, FI and ABS variants are still to reach our showrooms. Rest assured the bike is great, After sales depends on the place you stay. I think if your in Hyderabad its only about the search for the right Service center for the bike.

If you push your time a bit more and a little bit of a budget stretch, Fazer 25 would be available.

        Update!!
Visited Various Bajaj Showrooms and TVS showrooms

Apache is looking less of an prospect as it is costing me 1,12,026 on road without FI and Pirellis. (i would have paid more and taken FI and Pirelli if it were available, without it doesn't look like much of a prospect )
The FI and Pirelli version is nowhere in sight in the near future as commented by the showroom owner as well. Nothing was available for test ride as well .

The Bajaj Avenger street would cost me 1,01,585 (Siddhi Vinayak bajaj) with a cruise windshield slapped on ( negotiating for this :P) .I could only get a test ride for the street 150 (which works , as the only question i had was about the reach to the stubbier handle and the subsequent lower back pain) , i will check the cruise once before delivery and then take a call.

Hopefully will take a delivery by Monday/Tuesday and then post a Initial ownership review here, thanks!

Any specific Bajaj showrooms in Hyderabad/Secundrabad which are renowned for their service ? The ones i visited (Select Bajaj, Deccan Bajaj and Siddi Vinayak , all gave me a mixed feel about themselves )

Thanks for the replies, i would go forward with the Avenger , the cost difference and the heart quotient is coming into play . ( Hope the reply gets auto nested ?)

I bought CT100B from Select Bajaj in Habsiguda. There are 3 sections:
              1. Showroom Administration
              2. Service-side Administration
              3. Service-side Mechanics.

1st section guys are desi styled, they will know half the things to do and rest half they will ask the manager but all of them are fine, they do give correct information about everything you ask. 2nd section guys are the worst, and 3rd ones are the best. Mechanics are quite honest. My all 3 free services were done there. When by bike had accident, it was standing there for a month with full-tank and after repair it was still full tank. 2nd section has some guys with bureaucratic/political mindset. But most of your work will be with mechanics and they are really good guys.

Avenger is a good choice. The thing with service centers are they are almost the same everywhere. You need to kick up a rapport with the mechanics to get your work done to your satisfaction. Visit a svc during a weekday.. Weekends it's chaos, and be present when your bike is being serviced.

                  Update!

                  Delivery taken ,

I took the bike yesterday and completed the formalities. The showroom experience at select Bajaj was still lacking (i was there at 10:30 , i got the bike out at 4:30 ) but at least i got the bike

i am drafting an initial ownership experience as we speak.

The delivery had to be taken in rain and driven all the way around the city through the same
I had Family and special people to show the bike too....i think i have may have over done it by err...running 100kms on day 1(not more than 20-30 Kms at a stretch )(iin my defense , I was excited! , the closest feeling i could compare was while getting the graduation certificate ) , though i maintained the RPM (boy, the only thing missing here is a tachometer ) and speed...the suspension did get a very heavy workout

The bike is very inviting to go at speeds and feels very well planted. The engine lugs at first gear at low rpms as well , and its an issue to start from a stand still. I think i have to adjust my driving style and hold the clutch for a second longer or open the throttle wider(considering adjusting the cable for play , right now the first 15% of the throttle movement does nothing ) all in all i hope i haven't messed the engine and its gonna be a learning curve these things. Only worrying thing is smell of plastic , i feel something is burning ..i will get it checked tomorrow when i go to take my TR and insurance.

MT axis or Mugello will be the new lid that i am buying along with a jacket , suggestions are welcome for a lightweight jacket with removable layers
