  • Trying to buy a bike for my dad.

    Hello All,

I used to be on here a long time ago (when I was 16 I think). Life took me to several different places and across the planet for about a decade. That should be enough for my BS intro. I'm looking for a bike that I can buy and possibly fix up for my dad. I'm not sure if that's a possibility here at Hyderabad. But Ideally, I'd be able to buy a used Yezdi (because my dad used to ride one) and hook it up with an electric start (not sure if this sounds ridiculous) and a comfortable seat, backrest and make sure the suspension is in good condition. The issue is that my dad had a heart attack last year and I'm not sure if this is the best idea ever but he bought me my first bike when I turned 18 and I've always wanted to do this for him. If the Yezdi idea sounds ridiculous I could buy him a used Bullet. I have a few requirements.

    1. Good suspension (both mom and dad have back issues and I'd like it for them to be as comfy as possible)
    2. Gel seat (not sure if these are available)
    3. Back rest

I'd like for my budget to be 60K - 1.2L hopefully closer to the lower end. Again, having mentioned my dad's health I'm open to others telling me I should get him to stop riding but if I know that if I were in his position I probably wouldn't stop riding.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

    Query Approved

Given your dad's health and age, a lighter motorcycle would make more sense. REs are bloody heavy.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

I'd suggest a 125cc for him. A 125cc has decent power and FE apart from better comfort. Check out Yamaha Saluto and Honda Shine. Both are nimble, light and very low on maintenance. Both of them has very refined engine and comfort. For back rest, you don't have many other options apart from the Avenger.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

He currently has a Honda dream Neo but this bike feels like something Honda put together using the scrap metal from the other bikes at the factory. Trying to see if I can get him to sell it and maybe I can buy a bike that I can fix up before his birthday in October. If not this, I'll have to look at DSLRs... and buy him one.

Man ... I own hornet .. it's a very good bike... But for your dad unicorn would bes best... Check 160.. it's way better than 150... But 150 unicorn is tried and tested product... U can go for it with blind eyes...

Buying a bike that is so very overweight and vibrates like a tractor for someone who has back problems would not be a wise decision brother. Moreover the sheer unreliability of a RE should drive you away from it, if suddenly one day the electric start decides to stop working, would your dad be able to kick start it. And if you live some place where winters are cold, then you will have to forget the electric start, it will take a lot of choke and kicks to start a royal enfield.

My advise would be to get an Avenger 150. it comes in your budget. It is lighter than the RE, has much refined engine, is reliable, the engine is smooth, low ride height, comfortable seats with back rest for the pillion, low maintenance and service cost and a good comfortable bike all round. Take test ride and then decide.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Perfectly suggested by krishna77, a 125cc should be your choice, especially Honda or Yamaha. And most importantly, buy only brand new for the Gifting.
