  • Need help to select Bike for daily commute

    Hi Friends,

I ride a 2010 Honda Unicorn 150 and have not had much issues with the bike till recently. I have done 80K+ kms till date on it and only since last couple of months have started getting some problems in it.

I plan to change my bike, but not able to shortlist which one to go for. I drive daily to work and total distance I drive is around 70+ kms per day. Unicorn was very good for those drives, but now I plan to buy any other bike which can still give me a comfortable ride in city traffic.

Most of my riding is within the city and only about a small stretch (approx 12 kms one side) where I can find open roads. Here are some of my preferences:
    1. Comfortable for long daily commute in Bangalore traffic. (Should not end up with back pain etc. )
    2. Prefer bikes above 150cc.
    3. Fuel efficiency of around 45kmpl is good enough.
    4. Occasionally will have my wife / parent at pillion. So it should be comfortable for them for short rides atleast.
    5. Budget : Around 1 lakh, can extend a bit uptown around 1.5 lakh max.
    6. Good ride quality (tyres etc.)

I am inclined towards Honda as have been using the Unicorn since last 8+ years and have had not much issues with it. But looking for a equally good upgrade. Had Hornet 160 in mind but not decided on it.

Would be happy fr Any help or advice. Might have missed putting up something in my requirements ( as it's my first post). Plz let me know if anything.

    Cheers.

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Few bikes above 150cc will give 45 kmpl in city traffic.

You can try the FZ25, Apache RTR200.

Actually, I'm exactly at your position in terms of requirements, just diff fact is that I've to travel 95 kms daily.
I decided hornet as it is providing decent pillion comfort + ~55kmpl highway mileage.
Please explain the reasons why are you ignoring hornet.

          Thanks for your response.

I hadn't ignored Hornet... Actually that was the bike i had kind of shortlisted till now. Being a Honda fan, due to the quality of Unicorn that I have experienced through last 8 years, Hornet is what I liked too. Just was looking for opinion from experts here if there were any other bike meeting my needs.

How has been your Hornet experience till now? How long since you been using it? How has been Honda ASC been during services ? Their servicing was pretty bad when I brought my Unicorn. Stopped going to the ASC after the first year itself. Would be glad to know your experience with the Hornet.

I am concerned with the pillion seat on the FZ's. And with the Apache I was concerned about mileage being low. As I use for daily office commute, I am concerned about mileage too. Also I heard Apache for daily office long commutes, I heard about it not being as comfortable as some other bikes. But not sure about the comfort part of Apache though as I have never driven it.

When one emphasis on pillion comfort, that pretty much strikes out all the sporty models including Hornet.

I guess you should get a Unicorn again.

Re: Need help to select Bike for daily commute

Last week went for test drive of both Hornet and Apache 200 for a very short distance. For driving, I found both bikes comfortable, but Apache engine felt slightly more comfortable being 200cc. Pillion seat on Apache was little more comfortable than hornet as well. But TVS showroom guy said Apache 200 would give mileage of around 40 kmpl. My friend has a Hornet and it gives him around 50+ kmpl when he drives around 60-70 speed regularly.

Was confused which one to choose as I liked both bikes... But after lot of thinking have finally settled for the Hornet.

              Got it delivered yesterday too.
