  • Looking for a new bike, confused between RE Electra and Honda Unicorn 150 (old model)....

Hi guys, myself Kamalesh from Guwahati city. Age-32, Height- 5.9, weight -90Kgs. I has been using my Hero Honda Achiever since last 10 years and sometimes an Activa (since last 1 year) for some sort of utility works. As per my job nature (sales job), I need to ride my bike 30 to 50 KM daily in the city traffic. And during weekends I use my i10 car for long drives (200 -500 kms). Now I am planning to change my bike, and this make me confused after considering few points. As the thought of a new bike came into my mind, the first name came to my mind is Royal Enfield.....after doing a bit online researsh and riding my friends RE bikes, i decided to go for the Electra 350 over TB 350 and Classic 350 , as the Electra is suitable for both city drive and long cruising. But as I proceed with my research on RE bikes, I came to know that the maintenance of RE bikes requires good amount of time and money. Maintaining a RE bike cost comes almost similar to a small car.

So then after I searched for other suitable options for me, which will not dig an extra hole on my pocket and also saves my time. I know there are many other options now available in the market for a good 150-220 cc segment bikes. But since I am an old school kind of guy, and don't like the new funky designed bikes. So I ended my search with the Honda Unicorn 150 (old model relaunched with BS4).

Now befor taking the final decesion looking for some more suggestions from you people. I know that the Honda Unicorn is a bike with riding comfort for city rides, the maintenance cost of the same will be not higher as like RE. But is that bike capable for taking me into some long rides/offroads/tours without facing any issue ?

    Query Approved

The Unicorn 150 will be able to do everything that the RE can do and better. And cheaper.

The only thing you will not get is the thump and the entire lifestyle imagery that goes with it.

    Cheers
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

I agree with you. Maintaining RE bike is similar to maintaining a car. As my friend owns a RE service & spare shop I have directly seen how RE owners spending their money to maintain their beast.

But every penny u spend on RE worth it. You will get best feel & comfort will riding.

Unicorn is a proved commuter bike also have good comfort, best mileage & power.

Since you are a old school type guy why don't u try hero cbz Xtreme model which is similar to Unicorn in all levels.

Or you can try Fz, easy to ride in city traffic.

Do TD on bikes before finalizing.

        Thanks for your suggestions Pradip.
The thought of getting the Hero CBZ xtreme knocked my mind also, but unfortunately the olde xtreme model is now not available in Guwahati sowrooms (i don't know about the other cities). The showroom people informed me that older version is now not into production, since the xtreme sports model has been introduced. And frankly speaking the headlamp design of the new sports model has ended the charm of the bike (as per my view point), also the keyhole in the right side of the headlamp seems to be a bit awkward design for me.

Why not the Unicorn 160 (looks bad though) or Avenger? Uni 150 is a good bike with these details:
          a. The engine suffers from asthma. Cold starts need choke, in Bangalore. Don't know the weather in Guwhati.
          b. Next to no performance.
          c. Cheap parts and maintenance
          d. Dials as opposed to console. I love dials, but some people think they are old school.

I owned a Uni for 1.5 years - good bike but the lack of performance means you won't be able to overtake people occupying the road and talking into mobiles easily.
This bike has been in production for a long time, so mechanics know the bike very well.

Yes you are right that the Unicorn 160 have a bad look from the front side (when comparing it with the unicorn 150).
I would have love to have an Avenger, but it does not suit with my height (5.9). If the Avenger was a bit higher, it would be my second choice
            next to Electra.
Yes the weather in guwahati also sometimes offer you a chilling sensation during the months of December to February. (Choking the bike before starting is a daily routine during those days). Even mow it has been drizzling continuously here from last 3 days, and it gives you the early feeling of winter.
And yes....I am also a fan of the dials over the console.
