  • Buying a bike under 4 lacs in next 6 months, primarily for weekend trips.

Hi, this is my first post on the forum. I've being going through many similar questions over the past few days and still haven't got a sufficiently satisfactory solution for my situation.

I need a reliable and comfortable bike under 4 lakhs, max 5 for weekend touring. (around 1000kms over 3-4 days). I am 25 years old , 5ft 10 inches tall and I have owned Honda Dazzler for almost 6 years now. I have done around 35,000 kilometers on it and used for commute, short and medium range trips. I love the bike and have an emotional attachment to it, but I guess everyone will agree that its hardly a great touring machine.

I rent bikes regularly, online and from friends for small trips, because I love trying new bikes and have tried the RE Classic 350, 500, Thunderbird 350, Bullet 350, Dominar and Duke 390.

I really liked the riding position of the Thunderbird on the highway, and had no back pain after a long day on the highway, but feel the RE bikes are not refined enough and constant vibration gave me sore/numb fingers after a ride of about 350kms in a day on the Thunderbird and Desert Storm 500.It might have been because the bikes I rented were not well maintained, but I also feel the reliability of new generation RE bikes are also a problem as I've seen many friends struggle with maintenance issues over a range of these bikes.

I liked the Dominar in terms of its power, refinement and ABS. It's just a bit on the heavier side and I also have a worry that its not that reliable as its the first attempt by Bajaj at this segment and its prone to have its own set of problems.

I love the rush of riding the Duke 390 but its too much power for me, especially in the city where it feels like it is just waiting to break out and I have to constantly hold it back and it causes too much strain. So I can't consider it as a long term option.

I am planning to test ride the Mojo and CBR 250 too as I've heard from friends that those are good for long rides.
So overall I'm in a confusion as I'm yet to ride any bike which has completely blown me away and make me feel like I should make a big investment on it. My priorities are comfort, for pillion too as I will have a pillion rider with me occasionally, reliability and easy maintenance. I am also open to waiting a bit longer if there are any new bikes to be released.

    Query Approved

You can check out the FZ25 and its faired sibling.

The Yamaha R3 would be relaunched once the BSIV version is out. Do check it out.

Ive heard of a couple of RE 500 owners having problems with the FI unit. Stay away from any RE FI bikes until more user reviews come in.

I have a CBR and I feel its easier to maintain it than a dominar. Oil filter change is once every 12,000 kms, the oil lasts 6000 kms, and the air filter 12,000 kms.

The oil filter is around ₹360, air filter ₹309, fuel filter ₹150, front and rear brake pads are ₹900 for for non abs and ₹2000 odd for abs models.

Certain parts are scarce to come by, so make sure you stock them in advance.

The Ninja 300 ticks off all your requirements. If you want to do some serious mile munching to see far off exciting places then the N300 will get you there in relatively good shape being a super smooth twin therefore ride fatigue is lower due to no vibrations, great ergonomics and ability to cruise at 140 kmph all day without breaking a sweat. Kawasaki build quality is top notch and extremely reliable. The 2017 model is a stunner to look at and with a full tank range of approx 425 km is fantastic.

All the options suggested here are definitely worth taking a look at. The Ninja 300, CBR250 etc.. Also, as another option, you can have a look at the Mojo. It is a highly accomplished motorcycle, brilliant at highway speeds, and won't be intimidating with its power. You can easily mile-munch on that bike for hours on end, with minimal fatigue. Added to that is the large 21 Litre tank. Ride at a relaxed pace, and you will get a range of 450+ km on a single tank.

Along with that, I would highly recommend looking at the new Duke 390. Yes, it has a bit higher power, but you will not believe how tame-able it is in the city. And on twisties, it is an absolute gem, with its strong mid range and unflappable poise through corners. And when you are in the mood for it, it can be an absolute riot. And now, the seat has been softened, the tank is slightly bigger and it has that fancy display and stuff. If you still feel, the Duke 390 is a bit too much, definitely have a look at the Mojo.

I like the CBR250 a lot, only thing is it is a slightly dated model and it is not even mentioned on the Honda site anymore. Looks like they might be planning to launch an updated model with BS4 compliance soon. Will definitely be test riding it and the the Yamaha R3 once they are launched.

Yes, CBR 250 BSiV nowhere on horizon as of now. Even I am waiting for its launch and see what kind of model Honda launches given availability of FZ 25 and Dominar now.

Bs4 will be the same old model with different paint scheme, don't expect Honda to bring in any new bike, they dont care.

Quick update: I rented a Mojo for a ride of about 275kms this past weekend and was very impressed by it. The company which provided it for rent had some kind of RPM limiting mechanism, limiting it at around 6k RPM. So I wasn't able to experience it's full power, but still I liked the stability, refinement and comfort. I would say it's better than the Dominar in these aspects and that is a more important factor to me than a bit of extra power and agility.

So after this, I would say my realistic options are Mojo, Thunderbird 500 and Ninja 300. CBR 250 and R3 don't look like they're getting BS4 updates anytime soon. Would anyone recommend the TNT 300?

TNT300? I won't recommend. I may be misinformed, but, the spares, servicing and overall maintainence cost is high. All you get in return of the costs is a very sweet exhaust note.
