  • Satisfying the itch for a monster bike [Long term]

    Hey everyone!

Please bear in mind that this is a long term plan, and I won't be rushing to buy a bike for the next few months at least. This post may be a little long, but I have many questions, so apologies in advance

    Details:

I had a Honda Unicorn (2011 model) which I sold a few months ago when I upgraded to a used D200. When I made the switch, my plan was to upgrade to a Duke 390 and live happily with that until KTM brings the 1290 to India.
However, I've long dreamed of having a superbike, and finally I've landed a job that ensures I can comfortably drop 20-25 lakh on a brand-new liter-class beast... five years from now (I have a savings plan, but we'll get to that in a bit.) As of now, I've set my sights on the Ducati XDiavel S. Although I'm open to suggestions, I would greatly prefer bikes of a similar variety (yes, I hear you protest that the XDiavel is in a class of its own) specifically, bikes that I can take on long rides without developing back pain. So no track-oriented bikes preferably.

My current plan is to keep the 200 for another two years, then sell it for around 40k. This will be replaced by a new 390, which I will retain until I've saved up enough to bring home a superbike. Meanwhile, I will be setting aside a part of my monthly salary for the next 5 years, which will come up to around Rs 25L. (Including interest and tax deductions)
A rough estimate of the outcome of the savings plan - I can pay cash for a new 2017 Duke 390 after saving for 5-6 months. (Not sure if that is useful info though)

Now I have a couple of questions:

    1. I have zero experience on a superbike. The most powerful bike I've ridden so far is a 2015 Duke 390. Should I go from the 200 directly to a superbike?
    2. If yes, is the Ducati a good choice? Or is there some other superbike that is a better stepping stone? (I don't mind buying a used bike, but eventually I want to end up with a new SBK)
    3. If I should gradually work my way up (24 bhp to 156 bhp) which bikes should I use?
    4. Financing - I intend to save up for a few years and buy the bike without any financing, as I am extremely uncomfortable with paying for my stuff on EMIs unless absolutely necessary. If I go through other bikes, how do I ensure that they don't delay my plans?
    5. Anything else I should know?

(You might wonder why I'm so keen on getting a SBK by 2022. Reason is that family is working overtime to get me married, and as soon as the deal is settled, my SBK dreams will go back to just dreams. I guesstimate I have at least 2-3 years before anything happens on that front, though.)

I would really appreciate if someone could help me out with these queries - or even give me some advice about where to get these answers.

    1. Budget - flexible (anything between 5-25L, depending on bike and feasibility)
    2. Age - currently 25 :P will be 30 by the time I get the bike
    3. Height - 6'
    4. Weight - 95 kg
    5. Intended usage - Office commute, Highway runs, Weekend recreation riding - in a ratio of 80 - 10 - 10
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement - None
    7. City & Highway percentage usage - 80 city, 20 highway
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running - daily commute under 10 km. Factoring in weekend trips, likely to hit around 2k km a month.
    9. City of residence - Bangalore
    10. Brand / Bike type preference - Strongly gravitating towards XDiavel. Heavily in favour of a bike with upright seating position. Open to options though.

    Thanks so much!

    Query Approved

5 year plans have been discontinued by the present government

Who knows what you could get in 5 years, maybe the government will reduce customs by half and make your dream possible in 3 years or double customs and ensure the bikes cost nothing less than 50 lakhs! Too far away! Buy what you can afford today and have fun on it.

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

I agree with @TheMonk, 5 years is a really long time. Who knows Indian manufacturers might come up with a superbike soon which you could afford earlier and not wait 5 years saving up. We've seen a 373cc from Bajaj and soon a 750 cc from RE, and it's only going to keep going up.

If you can handle the 390 and develop the maturity and understanding that is required to handle SBKs, then a 'transition' bike may not be required.

Btw, any more openings in your company ? Wouldn't mind getting one of those XDiavels myself

With due respect, I don't think the OP is planning to die in 5 years. It's a smart thing to save up cash for the future, because the future will bring more bikes!

It's preferable to keep the savings plan a secret from the family.

Deciding on a sbk now is pointless, because there will be new launches coming up.

You can also try to go from Duke 200 to a Triumph Street Triple directly. I've haven't ridden one, but the reviews say it's light, powerful and a good sbk. Jumping to sbk class is actually more a self control thing than any actual skill requirement, going by the user experiences.

Haha. Point taken. In fact, you're tempting me to get a 390 and then see what happens 5 years later :P

I have sworn never to get another RE ever. I had a Classic 350 for a year, and it was not my cup of tea. Also, the job does not pay all that well; hence the 5-year plan instead of a 5-month plan.

          ---
So my understanding of the replies so far is, thinking 5 years ahead is too far off. Instead, upgrade to a 390 (or a Street Triple), develop self control and save up silently in the background. When ready to take the plunge, get a big bike based on what's in the market then. (Do correct me if I've misunderstood.)

That about sums it up. Try to do it well before your marriage, engagement and stuff though, no telling if the future missus or in-laws might approve.

Thanks people, I've come to a decision

I'll upgrade to the latest 390, and we'll see what happens in 2022.

(Mods, please mark this thread as resolved)
