  • Perfect Commuter/ Weekend Getaway

    Disclaimer: I am very confused.

    Budget: Upper limit 6 lakhs

    Background:

I am 26 and have been riding my first bike ( a Pulsar 220) for over 9 years. Love the bike, she’s named Angie, and has been a huge part of my life.
I’ve felt the need for an upgrade for sometime now but haven’t been able to zero in on one bike.

Im hoping to finalise the bike within a month or so. Before I tell you what bikes Im considering let me mention that each bike on this list has one compromise or the other. Also I live in hyderabad and my daily commute to Office is roughly 40 kms up and down. Traffic is terrible and very cramped.

    Bike must be:

    1. Suitable for daily commute in traffic
    2. Comfortable
    3. Fast
    4. Safe (Tyres+brakes+abs)
    5. Suitable for long rides ( intend to do a few long rides a year)

    1. Duke 390

Before I rode this bike, I was convinced that this was the perfect upgrade. But the bike is too buzzy, and I’ve heard a lot about problems especially with the 2017 390.

    Pros: Loaded with technology
    Cheaper than the other options
    Metzelers
    Cheap maintenance

Cons: Only one colour option ( I don’t like orange)
Doubts over build quality/ Servicing (bajaj has let me down, Ktm is basically the same)
Bike felt nice but didn’t feel special

    2. Yamaha R3

Had almost finalised this but it was withdrawn for the Bs4 upgrade. I have not ridden this yet.

    Pros: Great engine
    Twin cylinder
    Relatively cheap maintenance

    Cons: Lacks ABS
    MRF Tyres
    Rear seat is useless

    3. Z650

This bike is an outside possibility. I rode it once and loved it, always wanted a big bike.

    Pros: powerful engine
    Amazing brakes
    Comfortable riding position
    Premium build quality and finish

    Cons:
    Cost
Can’t imagine taking it in heavy traffic and someone scratching my 6 lakh bike

    4. Ninja 400

Would have been a sure thing, I was waiting for this but rode the Ninja 300 and it felt cramped, not sure if the riding position will be comfortable when your stuck in traffic for an hour. Not out yet, so haven’t ridden.

    Pros:

    Smooth engine
    Great build quality
    Looks terrific
The 400 will be launched with Abs

    Cons:
Riding position is a question mark
    That fairing is very expensive
    Scratches will cost a lot

Absolutely ANY advice is welcome. Thanks in advance!

    Query Approved

None of these bikes would be a lot of fun to ride in everyday urban traffic. I would suggest keep the 220 for the daily grind and buy the best you can afford for weekend rides etc. In your case the Kawasaki.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Thought about what you suggested and I agree. Getting some Michelins for her and will decide about the new bike later. Will have more options mid next year too.
