  • need help deciding first bike

Hello everyone. I am new here. I have driven many bikes (commuters, enfields and R15) of my friends so, i do have a vague idea of what to expect from different bike segments.

    1. Budget: approx 1 lakh on road

    2. Age: 29
    3. Height: 5.9
    4. Weight: 83
    5. Intended usage: city commute and i do feel the urge to ride bike so there will be once in a while long trips.
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement: expecting min 40kmpl
    7. City & Highway percentage usage: 70:30
    8. Approximate running: at present it will be very less around 10 km
    9. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing): Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh
    10. Brand/Bike type preference (if any): Dislike bajaj due to poor engine quality and NVH levels. Prefer naked street bikes Gixxer seems to be pretty good from what i read.
    11. Other details: I would ride around 60 to 70 kmph in city and around 90 kmph on highways. Guess i wont be touching the top speeds of any bikes. Prefer silent refined engine and comfort riding position. Buying for long term. I use things as long as it works and maintain them in pristine condition.
Not in a hurry to buy immediately.

Buying bike not just a requirement on daily basis but for the pleasure of owning one and having "me time" going out for lonely rides.

Going through the bike related news and reviews from a week. Read about the mandatory ABS requirement from april Shall i wait until then? Decided to join here to get better suggestions from the biking community.

I took test rides on hornet and gixxer. The showroom guys are not allowing to do a proper test drive, only shortest path around the the showroom . Dont like the way engine sounds on the hornet, expected a smooth refined sound as it is built on unicorn. Does the unicorn 160 too sound like this? Coming to the gixxer its eager and the disc breaks having an instant bite when applied thats what i can deduce from the short ride. Is it easy to ride in start stop traffic?

Also suggest a helmet and gloves for me. I have no idea on whats available in my city will concentrate after zeroing on the bike.

    Query Approved

The Gixxer is a better buy. Check who has the better SVC in your city.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Gixxer will be my first consideration. Any other options out there let me know guys.

      Anyone used this helmet?

Does the bike come with skid plate or do i have to buy seperately?

That helmet is Studds Shifter. I've used one in the past. It's a very good helmet and arguably the best in the price bracket of 2k-2.5k (my opinion)
Just make sure that the fitting is snug. Maybe tight at first, but will be comfortable eventually.

Gixxer is the only bike that offers abs in the 150cc segment, worth the buy!

            Hi brother,

According to your parameters, the Gixxer is the best option, period. I'm using the LS2 FF342 Corsa(INR 4000) helmet and DSG Motomesh(INR 1200)gloves. Highly recommend both.
The skid plate is sold separately and is apparently always out of stock here in Mumbai.

            Hope this helps

Hey there 8reaper. Your requirement matches mine. Just want to know why you have not included FZ-S2.0, FZ25 & RTR 200 Fi. Ive heard especially Yamaha engines are built to last and are of very good quality.

Regarding ABS, Im too on the fix to buy the bike in January or April. There is no clear indication of law coming into force, I read The Hindu article which claims thatABS mandatory law will be pushed back to April 2019,don't know if its the case now. Link

As you intend to keep the bike for a long time i would suggest you buy a Fi model preferably with ABS. i know the option currently are low (only Dominar, i guess) Yes It will over shoot your budget, but you will get a overall better package.

              1. Gixxer: No ABS, No Fi
              2. Hornet:No ABS, No Fi
              3. FZ 2.0: No ABS, Fi
              4. RTR 200: No ABS, Fi
              5. Pulsar NS 200: ABS, No Fi
              6. FZ25 No ABS, Fi

Trust me ABS is a life saver, I will anyday buy a slower bike with better safety than otherwise.

Hi Insomnia. I did consider Fz S too as it has lower pillion seat. FZ 25 and Dominar out of my budget. Gixxer does have ABS and FI in SF variant. Thanks for your suggestions let me know what you are purchasing.

                1. Gixxer: My eyes are on this.

                2. Hornet: too buzzy for my ears
                3. FZ 2.0: No ABS, Fi priority no.2
                4. RTR 200: No ABS, Fi. from reviews its engine is better than previous RTRs but will it able to compete with others?
                5. Pulsar NS 200: Will this be a better buy than gixxer ABS variant? this is pricy than gixxer
                6. FZ25 No ABS, Fi not considering

Why should i go for FI variants? any benifit in longterm use?

                My thoughts :
I dont need 200 and above cc engines.
1 lakh is my budget and can stretch it only for ABS.

Better fuel efficiency, better throttle response, better NVH levels, better early morning starts.

As for me I'm looking at fz 2.0 or fz25. Because after my pulsar debacle I'm not looking to buy any Indian brands.

Gixxer felt to racy to me and felt that it's meant for spirited riding style.
Hornet felt crude, can't believe Honda would make such a bike especially after unicorn 150.

Keep fz, gixxer as priority and test ride NS and hornet too before buying.

Re: need help deciding first bike

Guys ordered Gixxer blue yesterday for 91.5k on road with accessories(hope i am getting at good price ), delivery will be today evening or tomorrow morning.
Let me know if you have any tips for new bike run in and maintainence.

Some of you and my freinds suggested FZ to me. It is a good bike indeed but its costing more than 1L in my hometown so opted for gixxer.

                    Thanks all for your suggestions.

Which city is it? Dual disc or rear drum variant? That is wonderful price. Did you get any year end discounts.
I have paid 99k without even seat cover here in Bangalore (highest road tax in country)
                        Ride safe.

Its a rear disc one. Pricing was low cause 5k off from paytm and showroom guys reduced 3k. Town: kakinada in Andhra. I will start searching for helmets today, no idea about the available brands.

I completed 100km run in as stated , will take bike to SVC for oil change tomorrow. Anything else to be changed?

How are you cleaning your bikes? Is water wash enough?

BTW got the studds shifter helmet (blue white color)
