  • Need suggestions for a new bike

    Hi All,

I've been riding a Unicorn 150 since 2005. I finally feel that he's gone old and has issues pulling me on the roads.
I am looking for an alternative majorly for city riding. My daily commute is approx 40 kms.

Based on my build, almost everyone recommended an RE (plain reason for it looks "good" on me). Tried riding the bike in Pune traffic and I was left helpless.
I am used to a light bike with zip-zap freedom between whatever gap I find is comfortable. RE does not give me that.

Looking for recommendations from the various users/experts on what should be my new upgrade. I've identified a couple of choices. Any other bike other than this is most welcome.

    1. Apache RTR 200 FI (I am worried only for the plain reason that I do not find many of these on the road - else almost everyone has given a unanimous thumbsup for this guy)
    2. Yamaha FZ 25 (though I've heard on the high maintenance and costly spares)
    3. Honda Hornet 160 (Not so keen on him however as I feel riding the same bike again)
    4. Was waiting for the G310R - looking at the delay however, not sure how long will I have to wait - Do you think I should wait?

    Any inputs/guidance will be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Pratap

    Query Approved

The first two on your list sounds ideal. Light, peppy and smooth.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

The reason u are not seeing rtr200 fi on the road is becoz it was lunched couple of weeks back.
IMO i Don't see any reason to put 20 k extra on fz250 specially after the lunch of rtr200fi unless someone wants to go by the looks then that comes to a personal preference & hornet won't be a big upgrade over the unicorn. I would suggest to take the test ride of both the bikes & see Which bike can put bigger smile on ur face!! 😁

        Hi Pratap,

The Apache is definitely more spirited and more fun to ride both in urban conditions and the twisties when compared to the FZ25. In addition to that the Apache also gives you the safety net of ABS. It also sounds way better than the fz25. The Hornet is not an upgrade at all.

The BMW is on paper the ideal upgrade. It should be in India by second half of 2018. You can also consider the TVS Apache 310. It is based on the G310r and is launching on December 6th.

If you need to have a new motorcycle immediately, the Apache 200 is the one. I'd suggest you make a decision after a test ride of the Apache 310. Because these two(Apache 310 and the BMW G310) have the same engine, you will have a rough idea of what to expect from the g310 and whether it's worth waiting or not.

        Hope this helps.

Re: Need suggestions for a new bike

Both the FZ25 and RTR200 should be good upgrades for you. Hornet is not that much of an upgrade from a Uni 150.
Since you have experience of a very smooth engine in Uni 150, you'll find the FZ25 more familiar imo.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Thanks for the suggestions guys and sorry for the super late response (been traveling crazy)..
Have been checking with the dealer in Pune on the delivery possibility of the 200 FI variant.. No clarity at all..

In the meanwhile, drove a friend's Dominar and happened to like it. Would like to know your views on whether its a go-to bike considering the endless delay from TVS.

              Hey man,
It's rather frustrating that TVS dealer is dilly-dallying on the Fi/ABS version of the Apache 200. One can only imagine the after sales service! You could try another TVS dealer in your city.
Coming to the Dominar, I have ridden it once and only for 6-7 kms. Keeping that in mind, I quite liked the build quality of the bike, it's much better than the rest of the bikes in Bajaj's portfolio. The headlight cluster is quite brilliant. Performance is brisk too. ABS is standard and the heat management is much better than the KTM Duke 390. The gripes I have are, first, the vibrations. Secondly, the instrument cluster does not have a gear position indicator (my gixxer has one). If you can live with the vibes, the Dominar is a good option.

              Hope this helps
