  • Suggestion for a Bike

    Hi,
I'm 5 ft 8" 74kg and i used to drive suzuki max 100 R 10 yrs back and for the past 9 yrs driving an activa.
Now that my wife needs the activa , i plan to buy a bike and i need help in this regard. I went through different threads "bike for daily commute", "which bike to buy" etc and also gone through other web links , but could not get a clear answer.

I will mostly use the bike for my daily office commute around 8 kms which is expected to be 18 kms one way on ORR bangalore from next year.
Other than office commute, i plan to use the bike with a family of 3 (5 yr old kid) for short distance of < 10-15 kms to manage bangalore traffic.
For any higher distances with family or highway use, i will use my car.

    Based on the above
    1) Im not too much bothered about the cost or fuel efficiency , though i would prefer a VFM bike with good resale later, though resale is not a big criteria
    2) The another reason for shifting to bike is to avoid any back pain or neck pain, associated with scooters.
    3) currently i travel in scooter around 40-60kmph , max 80 and don't intend to cross 100 kmph in Bikes too.
    4) The seat should be longer to accommodate 3 folks
    5) Decent/adequate power for solo and family(3) travel

I'm mostly going for a 2nd hand bike < 3 yrs and i looked at the following options before me

    Avenger Street
    1) Mixed reviews on back pain or neck pain. Some say its comfortable and few say they get back pain, leg/calf pain
    2) Avenger tough to go around /monoveour in bangalore city traffic and small gallis u take to avoid traffic.
    3) Some people complain about skidding in initial period of driving
    4) Good thing is 3 people can comfortably sit and the gear shift was easy
    5) Also i see more avenger cruiser than street, but i heard for city street is better

    Unicorn 160 CBS
    1) Ticks all right boxes for me
    2) Every1 seems to be happy with unicorn in the early years and saw good reviews , though there was not enough competition at that time.
    Cons
    1) Recently , because of competition from gixer and others , i see not so gr8 reviews and not so much recommended in the sub 1 lakh category.
2)Even the sales number was less for unicorn 160 in recent months.Because of it, im bit skeptical, if for some unicorn 160 , will be discontinued soon.
    3) Also not sure if its the right buy , as i dont see it in the bikes to own under various forums under the 1L category

    Pulsar 200 NS
    1) Heard great reviews on that, best of the pulsar family.
    2) Good resale
    3) Heard good suspension for drive of about 20-25km in cities.
    Cons
    1) Not sure if i can drive with my son in the front. Also i think i needs to bend a bit
    2) Some folks were saying for people < 5 9" it becomes difficult thought i did not find it tough during TD, though i felt the gear is tough
    3) Not sure if 3 people can easily sit.
    4) Even the bajaj service centre / showroom folks recommended avenger street to the 200 NS for me

Based on the above can you help me choose the right bike, I'm ok to look at options outside of the above 3.
Please guide me with reasons for your selection, which will help me and others in the future.

I took ns200 alone, but if i go on the front i dont have to lean forward for the bar, but i guess if i have my son in the front, i might have to lean forward.
ALso 1 surprise thing was, i went to couple of bajaj showroom and service centres , every1 asked me to go for street instead of ns200 , not sure why

Also few things i missed in my original thread was
i look for a comfortable ride, w/o any back pain , neck pain
        i prefer comfort to power

NS200 i heard is both comfortable and powerful, according to reviews
but not sure it will suit me for my height and also for my family criteria.

Are pulsars apache 150/160/180 better than unicorn on the above factors i mentioned, i have not looked at them.
Have read bajaj does not age well and gixer seating might not be comfortable for 3.
        Apache im not sure.

          Re: Suggestion for a Bike

I own a Pulsar 220f. Mine is new but my brother owns a pulsar 150 . Its been 2 years now. It has a sufficient seat for 3. The pulsar 150 now comes under the category of commuter. Its powerful smooth and tempting to ride. And going out with your family will be easy also as it provides comfort.
My friend owns a avenger street 150. I think its a great bike for 2 people but you will always feel a power lag since the bike falls in cruiser segment, it has long gears and pickup somewhat lags in it. Plus, moving in traffic with pillion makes it difficult to manoeuvre.
Apache 160/180 are nhipure beasts. Their acceleration are enjoyable but vibration issues still persists. Which makes uncomfortable if riding for a long time.
In my opinion, you should take a test ride with pillion on ns 200.
As per my experience, pillion seat is not good and also the grabrails doesn't provide confidence.
Rest all depends on your requirements.
          Hope this helps.
          Ride safe!

Split seat is a strict no-no for a family man who is looking for comfort.
Gixxer has a continuous seat but still the pillion seat is very high. My suggestion - Unicorn160, Apache180(ABS) and SZ-RR.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Yes i agree, that's why its not in my shortlist(which i did with the best of my knowledge), But at the same time i'm ok to consider bikes outside of my shortlist, if it matches my criteria better.
Also , currently im not sure of which bike to go for, from the thread responses

                Re: Suggestion for a Bike

Since your are going for second hand bike the best option will be Honda or Yamaha , their quality is amazing..and the unicorn 150 is a true commuter and designed for family purpose and can be used for occasional highway tours also (gives around 45kmpl). I have owned both unicorn 150 and average cruise but for true commuting purpose honda is the best ...the avenger street as the name suggests, it's more on the sporty side , good for city rides and comfortable...the back pain problem as some people mentioned is caused because of the seat design and the way they sit on the bike ...the NS200 is more of a sporty street bike not a commuter ...and definitely not a good bike for 3 people because of the split seat .

Always look for a good quality bike rather than wasting your money on its maintenance , in today's world the biggest problem is caused by the show room people itself.. their poor aftersales service.
I don't ride a bike to add days to my life .

be careful of bajaj engines, maybe show it to your mechanic before buying preused bikes. As there are many factors like engine oil level, smoke test etc and i have experience in 2nd hand stuff bought for my friend. Soon the piston, clutch plate had to be replaced
