  • Unable to decide which bike to go for

Hello xBHPians, I've been riding a second hand FZ16 ('08) model for three years and have completed almost 30000KM on the odometer. I go on bike trips (mostly around 300-400km) once every one or two months depending on my exam schedules. The longest ride I've done is Bhutan trip (Siliguri to Paro and back from where unfortunately I had to rent a taxi because of some permit issues). I am thinking of purchasing a new bike around Ganesh Jayanti which falls in 3rd or 4th week of January. I am confused which bike to go for. I have laid down the details below:

    1. Budget: 2-2.5 lakhs

    2. Age: 22

    3. Height: 5' 11''

    4. Weight: 70 kg (but skinny)

    5. Intended usage: Daily commute to college (40 km total up-down) and occasional tours of 300-400 KM's. I intend to do long trips once my semesters are over (including Ladakh).

    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement: at least 30-35

    7. City & Highway percentage usage: 70-30

    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running: at least 40km per day / 800-1200 per month

    9. City of residence: Mumbai

    10. Brand / Bike type preference: no preference but would like to avoid Royal Enfields (because I've personally experienced issues with it during Bhutan trip) and no commuters please as I've already mentioned I am not a beginner.

I've some options in mind like TVS Apache RR 310, Dominar and KTM Duke 250/390 but would like to know your opinions because I won't be purchasing another bike for at least another 4-5 years.

    Regards.

    Approved!

Your usage 70% being in city and 5-6 trips in a year doesn't tilt options in favor of the faired section.
So Akula seems to be out of contention. Dominar, Duke 390 (both with extra windscreen) seem apt options. D390 may just be out of budget though!
    Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.
Because everyone who passes, isn't a martyr!

But according to reports the Apache is meant for daily riding and occasional touring/racing. Racing in Mumbai is out of question because of lack of Race tracks. What about using the Apache the other two purposes?
Also is Dominar reliable? And what about Duke(s) performance and reliability?

I am not just limiting it to the the above 3 bikes. Suggestions about other bikes are also welcome.

Even I have similar requirements like yours. Most fellow xbhpians have suggested me to go for fz25 over dominar 400. But somewhere I cannot find any right chord to buy the fz25. Planning to buy d400 in jan.
About the reliability of d400, many of the negative reviews are from those who have not even test ridden it or those being judgemental or those who expect a 100cc bike maintenance costs or the cult re fan boys.
Being a flagship Bajaj will not take it easy on the d400, so I suggest you go for d400 which best suits your requirements.

Dominar , i personally felt it was a bit top heavy and not very manoeuvrable in traffic.

FZ25 is a great bike, perfect for the city as well as the highway/offroad, however no abs and a lack of 6th gear is a let down.

Test drive the Apache RR 310, I think it will suit your requirements. It is not a pure racing machine, from what i have seen it looks like a racy/ sporty tourer which can also prove its mettle in the streets ( just like the CBR).

Re: Unable to decide which bike to go for

My major worry is the fuel capacity and the tank range along with reliability. Looks don't matter to me. I'm fine with any bike as long as it complies with the above 2. Akula has a 11 Lt tank out of which 2Lt has to be maintained for fuel pump efficiency. And Same is the situation with Dominar and Duke (13 out of which 11 is usable).

I TD the Mojo but found it too heavy and uncomfortable for daily rideability.
