  • Ninja 300 KRT edition or Ninja 650 Black?

    Hi,
    I’m facing this incredible dilemma.
My daily commute is of about 30 kms, in city. I’m not a proverbial ‘tourer’ per se, in that while I love to cover long distances on my bike, I am not too big on crossing states (not yet).

I test rode the Ninja 300 KRT edition (currently running at discount rate of 3.95 lakh on road) at Anzen Kawasaki for a bit and loved the feeling.

Then I took the Ninja 650 for a spin, and it felt sublime. The poise is slightly more upright, the added power is quite telling, better electronics, ABS and 67 Hp - all of it for 6.5 lakhs seems like incredible VFM.

However, I don’t know if my requirement merits going further for mid-sized class of bike.

Can the 650 ably pass off as a regular commuter?
Or should I stick to the small and nimble 300 (and consequently save on the dough)?

    Query Approved

Quite a few people i know use the N650 as a daily commuter without any problem. But then you are talking about Bombay traffic

The N300 is a much nicer bike to ride as compared to the 650, power being taken out of the equation.

Riding the two back to back, feels like Ninja vs Sumo wrestler!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

      Thanks!
So I should go for the more pragmatic 300 vis-a-vis the ungainly 650 (in Mumbai traffic) and also save on the dough.
I just feel like I may miss out on ABS and other bells and whistles of 650; furthermore, 650 also seems more ‘future-proof’, so to speak.
But yes, I’m taking your suggestion because I haven’t ridden either in the Mumbai traffic.

I feel if you can spend the extra cash, you should go for the 650.

The 650 will take care of your power needs for sometime to come and the addition of ABS is most important especially while riding on on our lovely Bombay roads.

You will get used to the additional weight of the 650 in no time. The 2.5 lacs extra will get you much much more bang for your buck in the long term.

        Cheers

Yeah. I feel the same. May be extra weight is something I could get used to.
What about maintenance costs (in the long run)? Is there a dramatic difference between the two?

            Hey.
I realised that I had entirely disregarded Benelli 302R in this chase.

Is it worth considering in this case?

Sorry for the niggling questions but I am just making everything sure.

The Benelli isn't quite at par with the Kawas.

Also, motorcycles isn't all about engine power! Handling, braking also make motorcycles what they are.

I rode the Benelli 302 R in Indore a few days ago and wasn't impressed. The bike is a tad heavy and somehow didn't have any character like a sports tourer or a sports bike. That superb sound that Benelli 300 TNT puts out even on stock exhaust is missing in this bike. On the other hand, the N300 is a VFM package in my opinion, as it firmly puts you in the saddle as a sports tourer, gives you that big bike feel, smooth throughout the rev range, plenty of scope to improve performance and looks with after-market accessories and a good range on a full tank of fuel, reliable build quality and yet light enough compared to N650 that you can carve corners in the twisties without breaking a sweat.

Thanks Akshay. This helped a great deal.

The 2018 Yamaha R3 with dual-channel ABS and new tyres just got launched. Is it weird that I still covet the non-ABS Ninja 300?
Once again, I have loved the ride on Ninja; never test rode the R3.
