  • Need advice regarding my new bike purchase

    Hi all,

    This is Sharath...
I am planning to get a new bike and struck with a lot of questions...
Need your help... first in reading my entire story what i am going to write it down and finally an answer for me...

I will try to avoid unnecessary things in my post and this is my first post guys... I have been a follower of teambhp and xbhp over few years because anything regarding automobiles i always look into these two sites.

Currently i own a Hero Xtreme 2013 model which is in very good condition. I started watching motovlogging videos and DIY videos and really came to know that a bike is not just a bike. It should be your responsibility, your daily preference, your companion, what not.....

Got a job now which i am in from the past 6 months and saving a lot of amount to get a new bike with my own money....
In this process i decided not to go for a 150cc segment again because i already own it and i am using it. I dont have any serious issues with my Xtreme. After gathering some knowledge i am taking care of my bike from time to time. Regarding the city commute, i go to office which is 31kms far away from my place here in Hyderabad. So my daily commute involves around 65kms per day in which the on going time is in the evening traffic and while coming home its morning 5AM where i dont have any traffic problem. The fuel economy figures always stands out for me from 50-55kmpl. I shifted to Motul 5100 10W 30, lube my chain every 400kms or once in 10 days, wash my bike whenever i feel i need to, etc. So i am satisfied with my Hero Xtreme and i am looking for an upgrade. I dont want to sell my xtreme and would like to use it along with my new bike for daily office purpose.

The main questions starts hitting me from here.
Decided to upgrade.... to what... a 200cc or a 400cc???

I love fully faired motorcycles. In fact the Pulsar RS200 made me to fell in love with it and a new bike concept has kicked off with the RS only.
So you guys might say if i love the RS then why dont i finalize it...
    Let me extend some more....

The top most bike i can afford is the Dominar 400 which is priced at 1.8 onroad here in Hyderabad. I dont want to extend even few thousands also anymore.

Bikes which come under my budget are:
    Pulsar NS 200 ABS
    Apache 200 4V ABS
    Pulsar RS 200 ABS
    Yamaha FZ 25
    Dominar 400

I somehow dont like the KTM's and Enfield so decided to stay out of them.

I did a lot of research, followed many groups and gathered very much information regarding the above bikes.

NS200: I feel the NS and the RS are same. Then why should i choose the NS which also has ABS but still a carburetted machine. So i some how not interested on the NS.

Apache 200: Went to the nearby showroom and the first impression i didnt like the customer service itself. Though bike is my main priority, the 200 4v is also a carburettor bike in which TVS launched the ABS recently 2 weeks back after a long gap. The onroad price is 1,28,000 - Carburettor with ABS.

FZ 25: Coming from a 13 or 14bhp i dont know it actually, i really need an upgrade. The FZ 25 is a 250cc bike but the power it has is just 20BHP which i feel is not a worthy upgrade. Though it gives me a good fuel economy than the rest i want an ABS which is missing and the FZ has 2 major issues. One if the Coin rattling sound and the second one is the silencer pipe color change. Few people said Yamaha has recalled the FZ25 for some faulty loose nuts, but i dont think that has nothing to do with the coin rattling sound which is there is almost all the Fz 25. If Yamaha would have offered me atleast a single channel ABS i would have shortlisted this into my top 2 priority.

    Here the real game starts...

    RS200 and the Dominar 400:
Fell i love with RS but after following up the Dominar reviews, videos, etc fell in love with the D400 also.
    RS200 ABS Onroad - 1,58,000
    Dominar 400 - 1,62,000
    Dominar ABS - 1,78,000

If you observe the difference between these two bikes is just 4K (with the Non ABS Dominar)
As per my knowledge which i have gathered, let me list out the cons of both the bikes.

    RS200:
-Fairing vibrations after long term ownership (can be fixed by using 3M tape)
-Battery and electrical failures which resulted in the bike breakdown
    -Engine stalling issues
-Coolant is being mixed up with Engine oil resulting in the bike breakdown
-Headlight looks killer but they doesnt offer a good spread instead they focus on a particular area
-Spares are difficult to find (May be bajaj has shifted its focus onto the Dominar)
-Uncomfortable pillion seat (I dont care about the pillion because i want the RS for my ride)
-Single channel ABS where the Dominar has dual channel. I dont think the Rear Wheel Lift Off Protection (RLP) feature will make sure the rear wheel doesnt get locked
    Users should say about this...

    Dominar 400:
-Vibrations near the tank at 4-5K RPM
-City mileage is just around 22-25kmpl (Pls dont think i am purely mileage minded)
-Maintenance cost will be a bit higher than the RS
    -Weight in city traffic

To be frank i am not purely concerned about mileage but i feel it is also a factor which everyone considers when buying a bike or a car.
When i gathered the user reports the RS will give 30-35kmpl in city and may extend upto 40kmpl on the highways
Dominar will give around 22-25kmpl in city and the max which can be achieved is upto 33kmpl max which is obviously a highway mileage.

I want to use my xtreme also along with my new bike. I really dont have clarity whether to go for the RS or the Dominar.
My brother says me 34BHP is too much for me where as 24BHP in the RS would be sufficient as i am not a rash rider. Max i ride will be around 100's. I dont look for any top speed tests or racing kind of things. I just want comfort with a decent cruising speed.
But having the dominar which is very close to the RS in terms of pricing i am unable to decide on these two.

Whenever i think of mileage my heart says go for the RS but the next day i again start thinking of the dominar.

I know clearly that i have an answer for me in the my points itself.

But need your suggestions, experiences with the dominar and the RS...
Users can help me out by sharing their experiences.

My primary usage would be as i said to my office and that too not daily. I might take the new bike twice in a week and the rest of the working day i would prefer the Xtreme.
Coming to weekend i may go for rides and that too i know that i will feel bore going for long rides every weekend after some months.
I travel to my hometown which is 230kms from Hyderabad once in 2 months. So that trip will also be helpful as a long ride.

As i became an employee, i am thinking that i will be able to manage my bike expenses but those should be reasonable. I dont want to keep a huge amount every month on my head.

Guys, please tell me whether i should go for the dominar or the RS...
Any update regarding the RS 200 2018...?
Will the dominar disappoints me in terms of mileage too badly?
In city my speed would be around 55-65 as on my xtreme and i might go around 70's on my new machine and on highways i will cruise around 100 or max 110kmph.
So do you think the dominar will do justice to me with these kind of economy speeds?

Coming to the RS, will i face any back aches due to its sporty seating position?
Most of the problems i have listed above are from pre 2017 RS200 models and some people are saying that 2017 RS200 has changed a lot...
    How true it is?

In long term which bike will be a reliable one for me...?

Waiting for your valuable inputs instead of critics...

Thank you for your patience in reading all this stuff...

Firstly Sharath, we welcome you to Xbhp. How about an introduction in the "Who are you?" Section?

    So, you're considering these bikes:-

    Pulsar NS 200 ABS
    Apache 200 4V ABS
    Pulsar RS 200 ABS
    Yamaha FZ 25
    Dominar 400

I think you should first decide the segment. Considering that you come from a 13 bhp 150cc, a 200cc or 250cc should be sufficient for a few more years.

You're right about Dominar's weight, specially because you own a lighter machine right now. But if you're determined to own it, than its no big deal.
However, do clarify to yourself the use case of Dominar- do you really need that extra top end grunt?

NS and RS have slight tuning difference, that results in slightly different power outputs, no big deal though. Both engines are derived from Duke 200.
I've ridden the RS and yes, the single channel ABS lets you to lock the rear brake. Depends on you, if you like it or not.

As for long term, in Bajaj they probably improve quality every month, so there's nothing much to say. It might've reached a level we all would be ok with, or maybe not.

FZ25 might not give you the top end you desire, but remember, sometimes bikes are tuned for low rpm torque and not for full throttle power. Depending on your use case, you might actually like the FZ25, if you're more of a relaxed rider looking at torque, and lesser gearshifts in traffic.
You're looking at cruising speeds of 100-110 kmph, which is no big a feat even for FZ25.
    ABS is a worry though.

RTR 200 seems a well rounded package, although there've been reports of fuelling/ carb problems. Let me add, a well tuned carburetor is not that bad when it comes to cold morning starts (with choke).

    I suggest you test ride RS200, FZ25, Apache RTR 200 4V and Dominar. Yes, don't skip FZ25, I suggest.

If you can't test ride, better chose among RTR 200 4V and RS200. Skipping Dominar because I'm not sure if you need that much power, and the expected efficiency/ mileage.
I myself own a Duke 390, and I'm hardly able to use it as KTM intended, if you know what I mean.

My vote's for Dominar. Don't see the bhp and torque figures, they are just numbers. Ride the dominar and see if you connect with it. Always go for the most powerful bike you can afford in cash. It would help, a few years later, when you get bored of going 100 kmph always, and bajaj launches the fully faired 400.

Btw, why are you looking for an upgrade when the Xtreme can do 100+ consistently on the highway?

Thank you for sharing your opinion.
I like the FZ series a lot but somehow not very much interested on the FZ 25 due to lack of ABS and the Coin rattling and silencer color change problems.
Coming to Apache, i dont think i will feel much comfortable on the highways for a long period of time and not a fan of its looks and design also. But TVS has come up with Dual Channel ABS version which is really a great move.

However, as i said my heart is very much interested in the RS and the D400. The cost difference between these two is 20K here in hyderabad but RS will satisfy me in terms of fuel economy but i need to sacrifice the D400's power and ability.

I am planning to rent the RS for a day and i want to drive it in city traffic and on the highway because i love the RS but i doubt on its seating position for a long hours.
Hope the Rental plan will help me whether to eliminate the RS or to go for it over the D400.

I will definitely consider your suggestions and decide on my new machine.

Thank you for your vote for the D400.
Coming to Xtreme i dont think it can do 100+ speed for a longer period.
It's already 5 years old and i feel the vibrations a lot.
Even today i cruise at a speeds of 70-80kmph happily which i think this is the sweet spot for the engine too. Going over those speeds will be a burden for the engine and for the rider also because i always felt that the bike may break down when i try to go over 100.

The good thing is i didnt face any major problems till date and really like the reliability of my xtreme.
Hope it would fetch me a lot of miles without any problems.
The only concern is deciding on my next upgrade.

          3) Chain Sprocket Kit (Including the front, rear sprocket with the chain)
          4) Clutch Cable
          5) Oil Filter
          6) Air Filter

Re: Need advice regarding my new bike purchase

Since, you need a bike for comfortable cruising. Then my vote will also go with D400. Yeah, it is heavy but th e weight distribution is good which makes the bike managable in traffic too. Take long test ride of both of your choices Rs and D400.
            Hope this helps!
            Ride safe.

+1 for Dominar. It checks all you requirements and is also the most value for money product you can buy.
It has all the bells, whistles and safety nets to keep you safe on the roads.
Take test rides and then decide.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.
