  • Dominar 400 2018 or Classic 350 Gun Metal Grey?

    Hi All

I am confused in deciding between the new 2018 Dominar and Classic 350 Gun Metal grey. Here are my requirements and test drive experience in summary:

    Age: 34
    Height: 5'8"
    Weight: 70 Kg, Fit build
    City: Chennai
    Previous vehicle: Apache RTR 180
Primary use: City usage primarily 20Kms per day either with Son or wife or both

I test drove both the vehicles and liked the feel on both.

Dominar: The dealer Power Bajaj was very proactive in arranging the test drive. In fact, the representative brought the vehicle to my home for a test drive. The power is linear and not overwhelming. The handling was very good and braking was impressive and not sudden or jerky. The gear shifts were notchy, but this could just be a test drive bike characteristic. Pillion comfort was satisfactory, through the grab handles were too short. Would any after market addition solve this problem? If so, please suggest.

    Pros: Feature packed, linear power
Concerns: Will it be practical? Will it be reliable? Never owned a Bajaj before.

Classic 350 Gun Metal grey: Primarily going for this specific model as it has rear disc and a new frame borrowed from the Thunderbird. The test drive vehicle was the regular classic 350 and not this particular model. The ride was pliant but vibrations were felt at 60+ on handle and foot pegs. This vehicle had enough space for all three on board (my, wife and son). Braking was satisfactory, and considering that you may never break hard or suddenly when you ride an RE, it was ok (disc drake would improve the braking a tad bit I guess).

Pros: Badge value, a tad bit more practical than Dominar I guess.
Concerns: Reliability. Will it spend more time at service than with me riding on it?

Please share your thoughts and help me decide!

    Thanks in Advance!
    Arun

In my opinion dominar 400 would have less maintainence as compared to classic 350.
For a wider handle you can switch to other bikes handle as well.
Both viechel are of different class and depends on your choice of riding
Dominar is loaded with various latest features like slipper clutch, and dual channel abs.For city riding dominar would be easy to ride.
In both of them i would prefer dominar anyday.

Dominar would be reliable enough for you. Dominar would also have the advantage of ABS, you'll be convinced that you'll not crash due to locked brakes, no matter if its dusty or rainy.
I've owned a Bajaj for about 7 years, before upgrading to a KTM.
You take care of a Bajaj, and it will care for your back. Simple.

Please note that at some rpm's, you will feel vibrations even on the Dominar. Grab rails can be replaced or custom made... Don't worry. I know a person who's got pillion backrest fitted on a Duke 390..

You said in Classic's Pros that it is, "tad bit more practical than Dominar I guess". Could you explain why you think so?

My overall suggestion would be Dominar.
I've ridden the Classic 500 on a highway (I know you're going for a 350), and it has its merits no doubt (specifically the torque at low rpm's), but overall Dominar seems better to me.
Also, since you come from a Apache RTR, you're more likely to prefer the Dominar in the long run...

IMHO, Dominar would be more practical than RE 350. Mind elaborating why you say otherwise?
Bajaj ASS should be slightly better than infamous RE ASS.

Thanks for your response! I was saying the RE 350 is a bit more practical as it would seat the three of us (myself, my son and wife) more comfortably than the Dominar. I might go again this weekend for another test drive and might also try the Classic 500. Is it worth to shell 30K/40K more on Classic 500?

Hey Manish. Thanks for your response. The one reason why I said that was seating for three (wife, me and kid) would be slightly comfortable on Classic 350.

            Hi All

Thanks for all your responses. Is there a reason why Dominar not selling like hot cake? It seems to offer everything at a considerably better price as compared to a Duke 390 or RE models. Any thoughts or insights in to this would be helpful

+1 for Dominar. It is best value for money product and you get all the bells and whistles for a very reasonable price.

Buy a RE only and only if you want a RE, there is no other reason for choosing RE over Dominar. There is not one thing that RE is better at than Dominar (on paper and in real world).
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

What you get for that money is a lot of extra torque and power, compared to the 350. Yes, it is felt.
But depending on your needs, a 350 might do just fine, for both fuel efficiency and rideability.

We at Xbhp do NOT recommend riding 3 up on any bike, even if one is a child. Still, do ensure that you're safe and pillions also use helmets. Take care.

Dominar is selling ok for the premium segment, but it gets fierce competition from its own stablemates (KTM) and other market entrants, some much cheaper than it.

Royal Enfield's good sales is basically due to classic design, and a familiar, torquey engine. The general perception is that you can take a Royal Enfield anywhere, road or no road, and you can find that most mechanics in remote areas are capable of working on it. Royal Enfield bikes develop good amount of torque right from its lower rpm's. This helps owners to cruise on easily on highways, without having to shift gears, or be affected by head/tail winds. (Dominar has a similarly good amount of torque, a little up the rpm though)
Assembled, fuel tank handpainted manually, Its somewhat of a handcrafted machine, in which no two are alike. This is RE for you.
You're right about the comfortable seat.

However, Royal Enfields' also have had the reputation of being unreliable, a machine in which not all things go perfect. A machine which may leak oil, may not have straight handlebars from factory itself, and also excessive vibrations at some speeds, or could even give cold start problems..

Dominar is comparatively a recent product, it has a lot to prove in the long run. So far, its promising and there's nothing alarming as such.
5-7 years from now, we'll probably have Dominar owners either writing romantic tales online OR selling for cheap their strides on olx.
Which exact side forms the majority will decide the long term reputation of Dominar...
You may try going for some aftermarket seat options on the Dominar, if you wish, but yes, the seat length is something you'll have to check and decide if its ok.

to me it doesnt seem like a comparison or doubt. Dominar it is.

                    I own a 2010 RE.

These are not brilliantly built bikes. Yeah, "built like a gun", but a gun that misfires often.

Don't get me wrong, I love my bike!
But these aren't the most practical things on the road. The Dominar is a far, far better buy. RE is for those who want an RE. simple.

That sums it up about owning an RE - seriously! :-)

Thanks a lot for your valuable inputs! I've decided on the Dominar! Has anyone heard about Dominar Champions at select showrooms? I heard those showrooms have a promo for Rs. 2000 off + they organize rides. Any such showroom in Chennai?

                        Thanks & Regards

Re: Dominar 400 2018 or Classic 350 Gun Metal Grey?

An RE owner for the last ten years AVL/UCE let me share my bit of free gyan.
RE has come a long way from CI to AVL to UCE in terms of dependability. They are less prone to breakdown, replacement, failure procedures now than what they used to be earlier. I am basis my statement on how you treat an RE right from the run in period. If taken care of it will cope. I have seen guys sprinting their RE's during the Run in period and then cursing about things going wrong. My 2015 TB 350 has done 60k with 2 chain replacements, 1 set of brake pads replacement and that's it. The tube tyres might be a problem however you can go for slime filling, I won't recommend alloys.
Coming to your requirement, the Dominar is a good product but optimum utilisation is on the highways. For your city requirement Dominar will be an overkill. RE with its low end torque will be a better deal to pull your family at low and moderate speeds. Considering you will seldom go over 80 RE with the torque is a better option. If you are ripping over 80 and above on highways Dominar makes sense. Considering you will move with your family I will go for RE.
Second RE classic will have a better and comfortable seating for you and wife /son. Compared to Dominar the RE will be more adjustable for all 3. You can add a comfy backrest to keep your pillion happy.
Before people lambast me for being a RE fan boy let me make things clear. My 2 pence thoughts are based on my years on a RE saddle, and your requirements. If your requirements change then my suggestion will be different.
Rest depends on your choice brother!
