  • Suggestions regarding Bajaj Avenger

    1. Budget: Upto 2Lakh
    2. Age: 26
    3. Height: 5'8"
    4. Weight: 75
    5. Intended usage: Commute from village to nearby town + occasional short trips (~300 km)
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any): 35+(preferably 40)
    7. City & Highway percentage usage: Mixed (more highways though)
    8. Approximate Monthly running : Under 500km barring trips
    9. City / Town /Village of residence: Orissa (posted as doctor in remote village)

My first bike was Yamaha FZ-S and it has served me well for 7 years. I'm very lazy and mainly chose Yamaha because I was told it was low maintenance. It's served me well but now it's showing its age. I'd like to buy a new cruiser. I've shortlisted Bajaj Avenger but can't decide between Street or Cruise version. Love the Cruise one but it lacks the tubeless tires. So do I

    1. Buy street version, replace handlebar, windshield and backrest with the Cruise version (4.5k cost)
    2. Buy Cruise version, replace the wheels and tires with the street (don't know the cost but definitely north of 15k)
    3. Buy Cruise and be content with the tubed tires (and invoke God before journey so I don't get a puncture on highway with no shops to fix it.)

Please advise. I'm waiting for the TVS Zeppelin launch. Will keep Avenger for 2 yrs and then sell. Hopefully a Bajaj will run for 2 years at least.

A Bajaj will run for more than 10 years if you get it servied regularly, and if possible, remain present at the service station when your bike is being serviced.

What do you think about Suzuki Intruder 150?
Its a smaller engine than 220, a little more expensive, but it has proper cruiser looks & solid road presence, seating position and also, tubeless tyres. But no visor, etc. and not enough power for touring although you can manage if you wish to.

My suggestion would be to be get Cruise and be content with tubed tyres. Second suggestion would be to get Street Version and try fitting the cosmetic parts accordingly, step by step.
I say so because wheels and tyres are an important part, and Xbhp does not recommended to modify those, even if they match, and also, because they're so expensive.

Get Cruise, and then even after 1-2 years you may decide whether you need tubeless tyres or not.

Thank you! Of course I do the servicings regularly, it's the untimely problems I'm worried about. Hopefully Avengers have better QC than other Bajaj's even if not to the level of Dominars.

Had considered the Intruder, but the the looks are kinda odd and the design seems off (one end too muscular and the other puny), too much plastic for my taste but mostly I rejected it because I rode a friend's Gixxer for two weeks and I didn't like it. I briefly considered RE Thunderbird but ruled it out because of the (in)famed unreliability of RE and the nearest service center being 100km away.

Supposing I could stretch my budget to 5L would there be any better option under 500cc segment (need that fuel efficiency of 30-35). Harley doesn't have the street 500 in India. Would the Hyosung Aquila GV 250 be good enough? I have no idea about their service network or track record in India.

Thank you, I'll be considering option 3.

Also I've heard that the windshield blows all the wind to the face and helmet of riders above 5'6 height and it puts strain on the neck above 60+ speed. I don't go very fast, but still 70-80 on highways is must.
