  • College newbie needs advice on RE Continental GT

Hey folks, I'm in absolutely pure ecstasy in getting to know that I was accepted. I look forward to becoming a proper rider and one day ride with you folks.

I moved to Bangalore, India from Jakarta, Indonesia and I am currently in uni.

I plan on buying a new bike. Since last year may - one bike that has absolutely captured my heart is the RE Continental GT, since the day I saw it on the web.

I absolutely love the cafe racer look, the heritage, the history and knowing that I could potentially own one, it feels like as if its gods plan.

I currently have a learners license for motorbikes, have drivers license for car.

I am using my car, a 2010 second hand white Honda Civic for my commutes and adventures. Even though I absolutely love her, got her a sweet exhaust - she gives me an average of 7 kmpl in the city and 9-10 on inner city highways.

Got her last June and already clocked in 5000 ish Kms with her.She burns a big hole of 4000 rupees on petrol, every single week (6 days to be precise)

Luckily, my parent's are finally realizing the burning effects of owning a car and they are changing their minds and slowly planning of getting me a bike.

I do realize that the Continental GT is no more on sale in India, there are a handful of second hand GT's with 4000 - 5000 km within the price bracket of 1-2 lakhs.

    Should I get one ?

I've read that spare parts are hard to get and will have to wait a long time in the Royal Enfield service. Parts are also expensive.

I don't mind paying more for the top drawer parts of the bike. But I cannot wait, with the bike kept in service.

Are there other shops/garages that can fix the Continental GT in a few days (if a problem occurs), around Marathalli area, Bangalore ?

My soul yearns to get the Continental GT. if I did get one -What are the troubles and issues that I would face ?

Ps. The new Continetal GT 650, would be too expensive for my parents at the moment.

If not the Continental GT, what other bike ? I want the bike to have great looks that turns heads, sounds epic (Even if an exhaust mod is required) and which performs phenomenal {Could be second hand} [Under 2 lakhs rupees]

I do realize that there's a lot of expectations from the bike with that sort of budget but please guide me master's.

    Topic Approved.

I believe you can find some suggestions here:- https://www.xbhp.com/talkies/what-bi...-ask-here.html

Apart from that, generally speaking, Royal Enfields are not considered very reliable. If you're lucky, you might not face anything at all. So, you can give it a try..

Yamaha FZ25, KTM Duke 250/ RC 200, Bajaj Dominor I think you should be looking at those.

      For a real head-turner - try TVS Apache 310.

Re: College newbie needs advice on RE Continental GT

I ride an fz25 and so far so good (10k++). There are a few things I don't like about it mainly being lack of 6th gear , even though it has a pretty mean acceleration to 110-120 because of it . For longer turing purposes it be best if it had that 6th gear, although you won't mind it if you tour only once a few months like I do . Then there's the lack of abs . I would recommend that you get a bike with abs ,if you are looking for a good performance bike with your budget .I would go and say it's kinda necessary , since you are a newbie and you can lock up the tyres easily . it's not impossible to learn without abs but it's just about the safety .

In short : try a different motorcycle , you will out grow the Fz easily. So for long term and best investment purposes try a bike with abs and good performance.

I wouldn't recommend the Apache 310 since it's maintenance cost is too high , especially the sprocket . Yeah, the head turning is expensive [emoji23] and you wanted to save money, right ?

Re: College newbie needs advice on RE Continental GT

          Plus points about fz25

          *Really affordable
*Good mileage 36-38 city - highway
*Has style still turns a few heads [emoji23]
*Punchy or kinda jerky depends on your throttle hand [emoji23]
          *Smooth handler in the city
*Comfortable seating although a little sporty , has a nice wide and long seat .
          * Easily handler on the city

          - points

*Pillion comfortable is not that great back seat although wider is hard .
Already mentioned the other points above

Re: College newbie needs advice on RE Continental GT

In my opinion Royal Enfield Continental GT is too expensive in service. But I am a fan of long distance travelings so opinion can be preconceived. Nobody will tell you that GT is comfortable for long trips.

While there are many options none will give you the experience of GT Continental. It has good components, tyres and 535 cc engine. However it is not comfortable for touring but a sweet thing in the city. Yes, it is discontinued but I think you should not have any problems for 2-3 years if you buy it now and moreover you can get some good deals on some used ones.

Nothing comes close to the presence of the 535cc Conti. I was in the market last year for a bike and was looking at used Continental GTs. Found a few below 80k with less than 10k on the odo. Also came across some common problems on web forums like frequent leaks from cylinder head and loose battery cover. The major problem as verified by service center here was availability of parts which meant I could have to leave the bike at SVCs for more than a week. So in the end decided to avoid it. Later got a new Gixxer SF 250 (poles apart from the Conti in all aspects), but works well in the city with good mileage and low running costs, good comfort and no heating issues which will be a problem for anyone, especially in Bangalore traffic.

If I had to suggest a cafe racer, I would suggest the Husqvarna Vitpilen. Good availability of service and spares at reasonable prices, good handling and dynamics. Doesn't look classic, but could be a head turner. I didn't buy it as I am a short guy and this bike doesn't favour short people.

I am a college student looking for advice on the RE Continental GT. I have been looking at it for about a month now and finally decided to buy essay online to get rid of writing issues. I have been reading all the information I can find about this car and it seems like the perfect car for me. It has everything I have been looking for in a car, but there are still some things that worry me.
