  • Need help choosing my first bike!

I am looking out for a new bike for my office commuting needs. I previously used Access 125 for going to college. I would like to buy a bike based on following criteria:

    1. Budget: Under 1 Lakh (lesser the better)

    2. Age: 23 Years
    3. Height: 172 cm
    4. Weight: 80 Kg
    5. Intended usage: Office commute (10 km daily)
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement: Above 40 (the more the better)
    7. City & Highway percentage usage: Strictly city use
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running: 10 km daily
    9. City / Town /Village of residence: Mumbai Suburbs
    10. Brand / Bike type preference: Commuter/Street fighter bikes, preferably with Japanese reliability, Honda!

I have considered the following bikes:
    110 cc: Honda Livo
125 cc: Honda Shine SP/ Hero Glamour
    150/160 cc: Honda Hornet/Suzuki Gizzer.

I would prefer the bike to come with CBS/ABS.
I am confused on what cc bike should I buy. I will be travelling alone most of the time. But I need a stylish bike.

Why not consider the X Blade?

getting a bike with ABS will not cost less than 1 lakh buddy..out of the choices u have mentioned, only Hornet fits the bill.

given the current requirements i personally suggest the "FZ S V 2.0 Rear Disc". Reasons for choosing this bike.
1.with your current weight and height i believe this is the best bike which would suit your build.
2.The long term reviews of FZ 1st gen have been bizarre however Yamaha has improved every aspect when it comes to FZ version 2.
            3. For purely riding in the city anything which has good handling and mileage would suffice your needs. I myself took this bike for a spin in the city and the handling is far better when compared to any other bike at this price range.
            4. the ride quality and engine noise is quite low and due to its excellent road grip it stands out while making sharp turns in traffic.

The only drawback i believe is the absence of ABS/CBS however these things could be overlooked if you are a pure CITY rider.

PS: I am loyal Honda customer for 14 years and i believe the quality of bikes is going down with every passing day (in the budget segment only).

Cheers . hope you make the right choice.

I'd suggest that you should stick with 110-125cc for your type of usage. Under this segment, Victor, Shine, Livo, Saluto and Glamour are good choices. All of these are capable of doing a good number of km.s daily with enough for occasional weekend rides and are easy on FE.
The exception to this class is SZ-RR which despite being a 150cc, has almost similar pricing to a 125cc and is a stylish and comfortable one to ride on. Do give it a try.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Re: Need help choosing my first bike!

                Take your time to do all the research you can, and when you come to realize that the best choices you have are the following;

Sub 125cc: Bajaj CT100(Kick Start Only) or Hero Splendor/HF Dawn/HF Deluxe.

                125cc: Honda Shine

                150+cc: Bajaj Pulsar 150

                180+cc: Bajaj Pulsar 180

                Sub 250cc: Bajaj Pulsar 220

                250cc+: Honda CBR250R ABS

Come back and decide whether you've set aside at least 20k from your current budget for decent riding gear, then with the remaining amount decided on which of the above you'd prefer to opt for all the while keeping in mind the following quote "If you cant afford to drop it, you just cant afford to ride it".

As for myself I started seriously riding the Hero Honda Karizma in 2011 and in early 2018 I completed the Golden Quadrilateral circuit covering a little under 8000 km's in under 2 weeks on my Bajaj CT100B for under 16,500/- which includes all expenses incurred from maintenance to fuel to food to accomodation, though I own and ride a P220 as well I've got to learn farther down the line that displacement and social perception has very little to do with hauling more miles and downsized to a 100cc, life has never been this exciting and fun on a motorcycle before and I regret going for a quarter liter as my first motorcycle as starting on a higher displacement motorcycle stuns your skill development to a great extent and you miss out on the really fun parts. So do think wisely before taking the plunge and do it for yourself not for anyone else.

P.S. Honda's aren't reliable as people think they are, go drop by the Honda Hornet ownership thread for a better picture. If you do enough research you'll know to stay away from anything that has anything to do with the CB Unicorn, even the newer 160cc iterations.

                Cheers, Ride Safe.
                A.P.

Re: Need help choosing my first bike!

Thanks for your suggestions and sorry for not replying all this while.

I took a test ride of Honda Shine and could not take it more than 100 meters. This was my first time trying to ride a motorcycle. It felt heavy and it also stalled many times. Thus I have decided to buy a scooter and not a bike.

I have taken test rides of a few scooters and here are my observations:

                  Suzuki Access 125:
The test scooter was probably a scooter which came for service or an old test scooter. It was very viby at idle. The rise was pleasant. I felt the scooter was very basic and it could have done with more features.

                  Suzuki Burgman Street 125:
I felt it would be very heavy to handle but it is infact lighter than the ntorq. The scooter is very similar to access. It is more comfortable for both rider and pillion.

                  TVS Ntorq 125:
Almost all reviews I read online claimed it to be the best scooter, so I went ahead and had a look at it. The side panels are very flimsy and could easily brake in a bad pothole/speed braker. The ride was good but seating 2 was a pain for both rider and pillion. Also the floorboard was small in comparison.

I am confused between Access 125 and burgman street. There is a difference of Rs. 9000 on road. Is it a justifiable difference? Which one should I get?

If you want to stick to scooters, give the Honda Grazia/Activa a try.

For Bikes - try FZ, Apache 180 has ABS on both wheels, Honda Hornet is also a good option.

I have booked (new) Suzuki Access 125. I am yet not confident taking a bike in Mumbai traffic. Will practice on my uncle's bike for some months and upgrade to a bike later.

You should go for HONDA LIVO , best 110 cc bike with sports bike appearance good mileage , torque and comfortable seat.

I myself owning it from 2 years and didnt found any issues and it has travelled more than 20000 kms. and gives no vibration at 70 kmph speed.

you can use it on streets as it has good turning radius and pick up, easy to handle in traffic and smooth on highways at 70 kmph
