  • Which one is best 150CC family bike?

Hi myself Selvakumar. I'm a married man and having one girl kid(1yr 5Months age). Now I'm using hero splendor plus bike and planning to upgrade with 150cc range bike. Most of the vehicles is not comfortable for wife and kid. They are having issues with split seat, over height pillion seat and some others. So please suggest me best 150cc bike for family.

My height 6 feet, weight 60+.

    Thank you guy's.

    Topic Approved.

I understand well your dilemma, as I too own a 390cc and family complaints are frequent. Most higher end bikes are not suitably customised for family needs.

But for your needs, may I suggest to take a test ride with family, of these bikes:-

    1. Bajaj Discover 150 (any variant).
    2. Yamaha SZ150.
    3. Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS.
    4. Honda Unicorn 160.

Just so if you're curious, you may try Suzuki GS150R in the second hand market, or try test riding the Gixxer 150, but only after you've tested the above.

Wish you all the best. Do post here, what you observed in these bikes.

Do test ride SZ RR which is one of the most underrated bikes in its segment. Has a very smooth engine and comfortable ride.
Unicorn 150 is also a good choice but is little heavier.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

          Hi,

Recently one of my colleagues got the Honda X-Blade. It's really nice. It is the best family oriented 160cc motorcycle in 2018 (not taking into account the ancient and old Unicorn 150) below ₹1.2lakhs currently.

It's a stylish and practical commuter with nice mature looking LED lights and looks way better than the Hornet. Has really wide and long seats for both rider and pillion, and I personally feel this will be he best bet for you. Also has a gear indicator unlike the Hornet. At ₹78k ex-shwroom it's really VFM too. My choice is this for you, take a test ride and see.

If you don't mind waiting a little bit longer the Xtreme 200R is also coming to South Indian markets soon. It has better power and torque figures and you get a 200 wih front ABS for almost the same price as a 160. It also has good seats but pillion seat is slightly smaller than X-Blade.

          Cheers!

Re: Which one is best 150CC family bike?

I too had to buy a family bike for my elder brother 6 months back. I ended up buying Honda Unicorn 160. Everything is perfect, the rear seat is at a lower height, handlebars and foot-rests are commuter oriented, engine is relaxed with lots of low end torque. But one thing I hate in it is the LONG gear ratios. I mean you can hardly drive in 5th gear in the city, the 4th gear has to be engaged at around 45 kmph, 5th at around 55 kmph. Oh and the rear mono-shock is a back killer and will not be good for the pillion. On top of that, the entire seat is rock-hard, the sponge is minimal and non-effective.

Why don't you test ride the Hero Xtreme sport? Nobody on this forum will suggest buying it because it's outdated and not fancy enough. But I made my cousin buy it 2 months back, and I really like it as a comfortable sports commuter. It has a split seat, but it's more of a gimmick. The height gap between the two pieces is quite low, the pillion will not even notice the height difference. Oh it also has short gear ratios, that means it's much more fun to drive in the city but a chore on the highway due to its low top speed.

If you are thinking of buying Honda X-blade, first think about its LED headlight. I mean that headlight is pathetic at night, it doesn't reflect anything during rains or against oncoming vehicle's glare. Also the LED light is integrated meaning you won't be able to upgrade or change it. Whereas in bikes with halogen bulbs (unicorn 160, xtreme sports) you can upgrade the H4 bulb to LED or HID as per your wish. I bought a 50 watts LED headlight bulb for my karizma ZMR 8 months back and I am just loving it, it's just too bright.
