  • Suggestions on a New Bike

    Hi XBHPians,

I am from Bangalore and I am looking to opt for a new bike which I would primarily use to commute to the office everyday. I travel about 50 KMS per day and I am currently using my brother's Bajaj Pulsar DTS-i 2016.

I have facing mileage concerns on this and have done my best in terms of getting it devices regularly plus refuelling it at the best of gas stations only to end up with an economy of less than 40km per litre.

This has made me think I should go for a different brand now as I have earlier owned the legendary Bajaj Pulsar 2007 right until 2016. This is retired now and resting in my garage.

I am 39 and would welcome any suggestions that you experts can provide me to choose a new bike.

    I am looking for:

    1. Fuel Economy

    2. 150/160cc variety

    3. A replica of the Bajaj (if possible in terms of styling and road dominance)

    Regards,
    Vinay G

Re: Suggestions on a New Bike

Any 150-180 cc bike is going to give to similar mileage of about 40-45 kmpl, owing to the worsening traffic conditions and stop and go traffic .
So you either have to make peace with getting a mileage of about 40-45 kmpl or reduce the engine size.

        Among the 150 -180 class bikes :
Honda CB Hornet 160 and the Honda XBlade 160 are 2 good Japanese options that come to mind.
Suzuki Zixxer and Zixxer SF are good options too. there is an optional ABS on SF too, which is recommended.
Bajaj Pulsar NS160, would be right up your ally, as you have a long history with Bajaj. A rear disc version with ABS is optional, which is recommended.

If you want mileage and are ready to reduce engine size a bit, there are some good 125 cc bikes as well, that give good power output and mileage.

Honda Shine SP, with 5 speed gear box is the smoothest and trouble free bike in 125 cc segment.
Hero Glamour 125 is an under rated but a very capable and reliable bike.
Hero Ignitor is a bit more stylish and looks cool. Not sure if it is still in production or not, but worth to be kept in shortlisted bikes.
Yamaha Saluto is good but, Yamaha is not doing so good at commuter bikes. If you have good service centers for Yamaha, its worth a look.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Re: Suggestions on a New Bike

I'll still suggest the newer variants of Pulsar 150(both regular and classic).
They don't cost a bomb to start with and thanks to Bajaj, they are supremely easy to maintain with dirt cheap spares. Regularly serviced, they have a seriously good life.
Pulsar 180 also offers dual disc now and should be a good choice too.
Apache RTR 1604V is another good option and should be fun to ride if it's as good as its elder sibling 200 4V.
          Regards,
          Akash Yadav

Never go for recent honda motorcycles, there are various quality issues associated with hornet and xblade. I am a 2018 hornet owner bdw

Get the same Pulsar 150 or Unicorn 150. all other bikes are more powerful and will deliver less milege in 150-160 segment.
If you can compromise with milege, Best option in market right now is RTR160.
There are other bikes such as SZ150/Achiever, but they arent selling well.

Re: Suggestions on a New Bike

Below is a small comparison between the FZs 2.0 and the Gixxer that I have in the garage (I have copied this from one of my replies on the fzs thread)-

The overall mileage on the fz has been around 45 kmlp in Pune traffic with sedate riding style ( dad uses this bike for daily office commute of about 30 km to and fro).

There has been some sound from the engine I suspect it to be tappets, but don't know for sure.

The brakes are weak (dual disk variant) as compared to a Gixxer (I ride a Gixxer with dual disk).

FZs has a slightly bigger turning radius than Gixxer.

I personally find the Gixxer to be more comfortable in terms of seat and riding position. The seats on the fz are hard and give me a butt ache on longer rides. I find the seating position on the fz to me a bit cramped for my frame size( I'm 5 foot 11 inches). A pillion will be way more comfortable on the fz.

Can't say anything on the smoothness as the fz is fuel injected while my Gixxer is carb variant. The fuel injection will anyday be smoother than the carb.

One thing to remember on the fz is that never let it run out of petrol, as soon as the reserve light flickers fill it up.

The fuel gauge on the fz is a bit erratic, it seem to have a mind of its own.

Overall the fz should be reliable if services properly and regular intervals

I would suggest going for the Unicorn 150 or the SZ-RR 150. Both are good lookers and while not sporty, they're good on FE and reliability. I've been using my brother's Unicorn 150 for the last two years and it's the most reliable 150cc bike I've used. And I vouch for the others who've spoken about the lack of reliability when it comes to the newer Honda Bikes (Hornet and xBlade). There's also a 160cc variant of the variant which uses the same engine as Hornet but comes without any fuss or issues. It's a reliable machine IMO just like the 150. It's more style oriented and not very aggressive at the same time.

                            Really good news :-)

As you can see in the earlier thread, I am currently using a 2007 model Bajaj Pulsar and looking for a good mechanic to overhaul the engine. Please help me if you come across any good mechanics from Bangalore.

I want to use this for 6 more months provided I get a good mechanic who can do justice to this old machine. Love it dearly and do not wish to see it getting serviced with someone unprofessional :-)Click image for larger version
