  • Daily Commuter + Weekend Tourer

I am currently using 2016 Apache 180 RR but in the process to upgrade to a sub 400cc bike. Have listed few details below for you to help me with your suggestions -
    1. Budget – INR 3-4 lakhs
    2. Age - 25
    3. Height – 172 cm
    4. Weight – 80 kg
    5. Intended usage - College commute, Highway runs, Weekend recreation riding
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement – 25 to 35
    7. City & Highway percentage usage – 60:40
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running – 40km/1200km
    9. City / Town /Village of residence – Gurgaon
    10. Brand / Bike type preference – More into street bikes than racing ones. Thinking between KTM390/BMW310r/maybe TVS 310rr if I get hands on a test vehicle

    Thanks

I feel KTM's 390 would suit more based on your requirements.
You can get TD of BMW310R from nearest dealer of yours but i havent heard of Apache 310RR given for TD yet-if you get you must be lucky!

The Ninja 300 will be a perfect option as it now comes with ABS and now costs 2.99 lakhs! You can tour on the Duke 390 but you'll be more comfortable on the Ninja 300 because of the fairing and windscreen which will eliminate wind blast. It also has a bigger fuel tank and is a Kawasaki.

So I made visits to each of the showrooms for test rides -
          1. TVS - part of what you mentioned was correct, the showroom didn't have a test vehicle and claims the company hasn't provided them since it was launched. After lot of persuasions, he finally agreed for a test ride in the SERVICE LANE in front of the showroom. Testing a 300+cc bike in a small 2x2 lane. Joke. Anyways, liked the bike in the whatever 200 odd meters I rode. Not thinking about this because of a) bad service center experiences with Apache 180 & b) all the reports about expensive spare parts makes me worry

          2. KTM - I have ridden the bike on one previous occasion (TD) but felt I ought to try again to get a better hand of thing but unfortunately the dealer didn't have a test vehicle as the one they had met with an accident. So over the weekend will try my luck with other KTM guys in the area

          3. BMW - Oh my word. what a bike, what sales experience. The only thing stopping me is the premium of 80-90k over the duke for less power. Plus I am constantly chasing the showroom guys for details on spare part price list but haven't heard from them. Someone shared some photos of first service bill which was pretty steep.

Not looking at faired bikes honestly. Plus isn't the technology old now? I think they have not upped the game in this category for the last 3 years.

Have you test drive UM bikes?
The renegade is superb for your need.
            The pricing is fair.
Though the plastic quality don't look as great as BMW but acceptable.

I feel like you should test drive renegade for comfort and engine smoothness.

Well, you mentioned the Apache RR310 so i thought you had no problem with faired bikes. It maybe old but the Ninja will suit both your needs and it is quicker than the bikes you mentioned except for the Duke. The only thing is, Kawasaki is not giving test rides.

I'd say go for Apache 310, it sounds & looks awesome and has pretty good performance. With the budget saved, get good riding gear for yourself, safety comes first.

Getting a TVS bike will make sure that you have wider service network than other manufacturers in that budget.
