  • Help required to book my RE bike please.

    Dear Friends,

I want to book my first bike (& last) in next 1-3 months.

    About me :

I am basically a four wheeler. (Punto 1.3 in past & Rapid 1.6 at present).

Use for daily commuting ( 20 km/day), given the Mahindra Flyte 125 to my wife for her daily use.

I am 6 ft and 44 years old. weight 75 Kgs. Never drove bike. But now leaned a bit from my colleagues.

    Purpose:

No real use. Just old colleague life passion which only now I have fulfil.

Maybe some day will take to office (18 KM) to avoid terrific traffic jam in Bangalore.

And may be next year (by then IF I really feel confident about my skill on bike riding) then will go to Himalaya with one my colleague (56 years old).

    Likes:

Want a pure Retro style Cruiser. Any sport type bike NO NO for me. Do not need huge power/speed.

    Budget : Max 2 .4 L On-road.

Will invest on good safety gears, accessories for another 50 K.

Options selected after burning a lot of night lamp oil :

    1: Classic 350 ABS Signals
2: Thunderbird 350 (with dual ABS) - Yet to arrive
3: Classic 350 Redditch Red (with dual ABS) - Yet to arrive
    4: Himalayan BS4 ABS
4: Avenger 400 - AMBA Bajaj told me it is coming on November but in some portal found not coming before 2020. So not an option now.
4: Honda Rebel 300 - do not know when it will come, only 11 L tank, will be out of my budget.

    Very short TD experience :

1: Classic 350 (with F- Disk, R-Drum) - Felt comfortable and manageable by me.
2:Thunderbird 350 - Felt very comfortable but not manageable by me. Need huge practice. Doubt if I can take it to Himalaya with heavy machine??
3: Himalayan BS4 ABS : No vibration at all. Very comfortable. Gear shifting very easy for me and gear indicator very helpful for me. But due it's huge size even looking also I get scared and if and dis balance /accident happen I cannot control it. Having same doubt for TB 350 also.

    Options now :

1: Thunderbird 350 with dual ABS

    OR

2: Classic 350 with dual ABS

    Questions:

1: What are the maintenance cost and issues for both in 2018.
2: Will be Ground Clearance an issue in bad roads, himalaya/ladakh ?
3: Which one easy to handle, manage in low speed?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi sir , welcome to xbhp !!

Even though am not an owner of RE , I' d like to say some thoughts .. .

Himalayan is the bigger bike and as the name suggests it's very good for off-roading and can tackle bad roads easily.

As you'd mentioned that you have no experience in biking it's not advisable to go with the any classic or TB models as their ground clearance are very bad.

And the Ground Clearance is a major disappointing one during touring.

RE Himalayan GC : 220 mm
RE All other bikes. : 135 mm

I didn't mean you shouldn't buy the classic or TB they are also good but the choice is yours.
Even with a mighty Hayabusa (world's fastest bike once ) also our people spin it off to Himalayas !! You can check in YouTube.

** Going to Himalayas isn't a easiest one , needs more training, preserverance, knowledge about bikes.

Take your own time , choose accordingly . All the best.

      Ride safe .

      Cheers!!

Why aren't you considering Dominor 400?

Re: Help required to book my RE bike please.

Classic 350 ABS signals will be the better option but if it is going to be mostly highway drives during the weekends and little usage in the city then go in for the Classic 500 as the 350 does feel a bit out of its breath after 95 Kmph and it starts to struggle. Still 350 is capable of hitting/cruise in 100 Kmph but Classic 500 will be a better option than the 350. Thunderbird 350 will be comfortable for rider but not comfortable for the pillion as the pillion seat is small or short.

These RE bikes are maneuverable in city irrespective of its weight, its weight is noticeable only during parking speeds/when using centre stand or side stand. So all RE Bikes are easy to handle and manage in low speeds. When you are standstill in a traffic signal the weight is not noticeable.

The Ground Clearance for RE bikes are quite sufficient and can cross big speed breakers without scrapping the bike and driving in himalaya/ladakh, if driven carefully your bike won't scrap.

              Hello Sir,
There are some pretty good alternatives to REs which are better in terms of overall riding and ownership experience, but if you are hell bent on buying an RE then I would recommend the Thunderbird 350. I have had a great deal of experience riding almost their entire line up and the Thunderbird shines out in terms of comfort and handling. I haven't ridden the Himalayan, though owners and reviewers tag it as an outlandish RE as it vibrates less, the engine is very refined and is pretty nice to ride too, however the carburetted version had several problems so I will recommend doing a thorough research before buying it. As far as ABS is concerned, it is a great tech for added safety but comes with its own set of limitations. Taking your bike to Himalayas will depend more on you than on the bike, people have taken their scooters there, so the machine will be the last hindrance to your expedition.
So if it is an RE go for Thunderbird 350 or the Himalyan (after research).

PS : Do check out Bajaj Dominar, it is a pretty good machine.

Re: Help required to book my RE bike please.

Out of these himalyan will be the best. You will get used to it while riding.
But major concern in RE is that they arent reliable.
Do Visit classic 350/500 ownership thread, and also for TB as well
Read opinions of people there and their problems.
See that those problems are managable for you.

I you can change your mind ,i will suggest you a dominar
it has best handling, dual channel abs, slipper clutch,fi etc
which would definitely help you in himalyas.

Re: Help required to book my RE bike please.

Hi.. I can understand your dilemma as I was going through the same few days ago. I initially had pulsar dtsi as my first bike. Lasted all my engineering days and then I got myself FZ16. Pretty beast it was. But there was a desire to own a Royal Enfield which was there back in my mind.
Anyhow years passed by and got myself my first car ecosport and since then have been driving around the same. Pretty happy and satisfied with its performance with no terrain left. Drove to Himalayas, beaches all. Then on our last trip to spiti we didn’t take our car. Instead we hired Royal Enfield classic 350. And that itch came back to own one.

Coincidentally re launched abs 350. I was also confused with Himalayan and 350 abs but then I went ahead and got myself 350 abs. Considering point the feel. Now this is very much subjective to an individual. I am pretty happy with the bike so far. I have read a lot about the issues with RE. So let’s see.

Well as people here mentioned rather than bike it’s the rider who matters on Himalayas. Have seen pretty much everything there right from a Scooty to sports bike to bicycle to rickshaw.
