  • Second hand cbr 250r

Hello everyone, this is my first step towards getting my first bike ( yayyy), but given the circumstances I must go for a second hand one. So the best thing I think for me would be a cbr250r. So the thing is, the one I'm looking at is already 23000 km plus (2012 model), I'd like to know whether it is advised to go for it or not, keeping in mind that I'm up for the repainting and replacement of parts. The only thing I'm really concerned about is the engine and performance, now i know that since it's already 23000 +, can I do something to get it nearer to the power it is supposed to deliver ?

      Re: Second hand cbr 250r

Brother 23 thousand kms is nothing for a Japanese engine. It is practically brand new. There are people here in Xbhp who have completed more than 1.5 lakh kms on a R15 without any problem and are still going strong. So number of kms done is your major concern, you can rest easy. The bike will outlast your wildest imaginations.

Now coming down to second hand thing. If you know the previous owner personally and are sure that he takes good care of his stuff (regular servicing and maintenance) then you can go ahead without even thinking about it. If you don't know the owner and are not sure how the bike was treated, then check the service booklet. See if the bike was serviced on time ( a good owner will never miss a service). Check if consumables like brake pads, oil filters, air filters etc were changed on time (these parts will be mentioned on the bill). Check if the bike was in any serious accident ( there will be bills for major part replacements like headlight dome, fairing etc). Then take the bike to the authorized service center and ask them to check it out thoroughly and let you know if anything major is about to fail or needs replacement. They will charge you some amount but, it is better to have peace of mind. Being stranded on a long tour on a high tech sports tourer is not at all a good feeling.

After you have done all the above and made sure that the bike is ok, then go ahead and make the deal. It is a sad truth that bikes like R15, Dukes and CBRs are bought mostly by roadside rossies, they are ripped like hell from the first day, crashed a few times in the very first months and then after a year and a half when the repair and service bills are too much they are sold off. And then new owners like you get a headache when something or the other fails. So make sure the previous owner was a responsible one.

Regarding the kms done, I say again, 23 thousand is nothing for a well engineered engine like CBR. The Japs have built up that reputation and they live by it. I myself have a 2014 R15 and can vouch for them.

      Happy bike hunting brother.
      Ride safe.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

It all depends on what price you're paying for it, and what is the condition of internals. 23000KMs isn't much for a CBR250R, but question is if it was properly maintained. The bike is already 6 years old. If possible, take someone who owns a CBR250R, or atleast someone who knows how to check a bike's engine health. A properly maintained bike wouldn't lose any power after 23000 KMs. Make sure there is no oil leak anywhere near cylinder, or oil sump. Check if radiator is in good condition. Turn on the bike and let it heat for 5-6 minutes. Check how much fuel is in the bike. A blinking indicator means owner doesn't cared about health of fuel pump and always ran in reserve. While it idles. Listen to exhaust note, engine should idle smoothly, no choking or fluttering of any kind should be there. Listen to the engine while standing 4-5 feets away from it. It shouldn't make noticeable stitching machine sound. Once the engine is warmed up (3 bars in temperature sensor). Rev the bike and listen to smooth exhaust note. There will be some vibrations but not anything bone jarring. Take the bike out and feel its brakes. Feel it for 1-2 KMs, get used to the way it handles. CBR250R lungs below 3000RPM, Power surge comes in at around 5000RPM (its a bit scary if you're not prepared), remains till rev limit of 10,500 rpm. It should climb up in its revs without any hesitation or misfire or excessive vibrations. 3rd gear top speed is 107kmph and it will reach there within 9 seconds. I'd also suggest you to ride it in traffic for a while. Radiator fan should kick in when the bike gets stuck in bumper to bumper traffic. If you and the bike feels happy. Go ahead with the deal.

Some parts that may require replacement by now:
Tyres: 6000-10,000 a set (depends on your budget)
Brake pads: 4000 a set for ABS variant, No idea about Non ABS but it costs considerably less.
Chain sprocket: 1800 for whole kit
        Air filter: 250 or something
        Oil filter: 300
Engine oil: around 1100 at honda service center.

I would say get all fluids replaced. (coolant, brake fluids, oil)
Change throttle and clutch cables just to be safe
        Change sparkplug.

I believe these would cost upward of Rs.10,000 but will give you peace of mind in the long run.
There is no destination, I just want to keep riding.
